Don't know if you'll see this but Forough Farrokhzad is one of Iran's most influential 20th century poets, and she recently had a new translation put out by New Directions this year, if you're looking for more Middle Eastern poetry to check out
Amazing video! The traslation of the Shahmameh Dick Davis did for Penguin Classics is one of the most thrilling reading experiences I've had so far this year: read less like scripture to me and more like the Persian equivelent to Homer's Oddyssy!
I'm Persian and really proud that you are enjoying Farsi poetry. By the way I'm sorry to say that obviously reading the poems in Farsi is pleasurable on another level so you guys are missing on so much fun.
Hey there! Thanks for the encouragement and kind words. Alas-as with Arabic and Hebrew (to name only two languages with sacred poetry) I well understand the multiple levels of meanings I sacrifice in English translation. My only regret with this video is that I didn’t read or talk about the divan of Hafez. All my best to you!
Got this one when NYRB brought it out. Always read these at least twice and each time is the like the first. Now I'll run through this one again. Slowly. Love Omar too. Joyous nihilism.
I just discovered your channel and I'm so glad I did. It looks like you cover a very wide range of great writers. Very cool library too. Have you read or reviewed Paul Auster? He is such a unique, amazing writer. Thanks for this channel, great work!!
@@LeafbyLeaf My personal favorite is Berserk by Kentaro Miura. The story is phenomenal, and while the art in the first few volumes is nothing special it improves to the point of being considered the best art in manga. Warning it is very graphic and deals with a lot of harsh themes. Three more greats are Monster, Vagabond, and Vinland Saga
This is an important video and deserves more views. We all stand on the shoulders of giants called Rumi, Du Fu, Solomon. On a less solemn note, killer T-shirt.
You're always so a pleasure to watch.
🙏
The art in the special edition is beautiful! We should have more translated work brought to the public consciousness of the English speaking world.
Congratulations on 20K 👍
Thanks so much! 😁🙏
Gold is an excellent collection. I just recently read it. The poems can be enticing.
Agreed. Even if one doesn’t believe in any instantiation of a Beloved-the poems still have a charge to the language.

Hey there. Thank you so much for this recommendation! "Let Us Believe in the Beginning of the Cold Season": what a great title!

Thanks for the tip on that edition!
@@LeafbyLeaf Definitely worth your time!

I should have included Hafez, too!
lovely

Thanks so much, Bryan! I have yet to read Auster-amazingly-but it’ll happen some day I’m sure!
Ghalib, in Arjun and the Good Snake...turn to the beauty of decadence
Where can I pick up that beautiful copy of Rubaiyat?

Thanks so much!
Yeah!
Right on!
Edward not Robert! You mixed up the Fitzgerald translators lol. Great video!
🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Have you read much manga in your time?
I actually have yet to read any manga. Where would you suggest I begin? Thanks!

Thanks! Unfortunately, poetry will fetch the least amount of views by far.
