It may be a threat to crypto, but also a threat to everything else that has a password. Bank accounts, top secret government servers, encrypted communications, and on and on. It would change the way we view privacy and security in every facet of our life, not just bitcoin.
@ng1663 banks, government servers, etc... can upgrade way easier since they are centralized. Matter of fact the NSA has been recommending transitioning to post quantum cryptography since 2018, while apple, cloudflare, google, and many others have already successfully rolled out PQC in their applications in various forms
Quantum computing is NOT a threat to the leading algorithms for symmetric encryption nor password hashing. The threat to public key cryptography is limited by the quantum coherence problem being exponential with the number of bits.
Exactly! Why does crypto always get singled out? Remember when everyone was criticizing its energy consumption? Now AI is using massive amounts of energy too, but no one seems to be making a big deal about it.
ICP is safe. It’s built so that different encryption schemes can be swapped in and swapped out easily. When the time comes ICP will only have to spend minimal time to implement quantum safe encryption algos

You are missing a key challenge of entanglement. The qubits have to be entangled to perform computation. In the spinning plate analogy, it is not just stabilizing more plates…for each spinning plate to be useful, it has to affect all of the others. Imagine a system of spinning plates where they are all stacked on top of each other like a house of cards such that a change in any one affects the others. That’s why you can’t just connect thousands of Willow chips together like a supercomputer does with regular processors. Yes we should work on Q proofing, but it is far from the imminent threat people believe.
Couple of things you got wrong: To break cryptography from Satoshis coins he must have to spend some amount, otherwise it’s impossible because he never exposed them to this attack. Regarding the change of protocol and how this would “betray the ethos” I disagree. If an improvement to the protocol is needed then it should be upgraded as all other systems will need to do. I think the fundamental ethos of Bitcoin is it’s fixed supply which will never change.
