This version of Maddy Bates is thematically BRILLIANT. In her quest to "make lives better," Emma is completely oblivious that Maddy Bates is also powerfully committed to making peoples lives better -- more so than Emma, as Emma can kind of afford whatever she wants, and Maddy's generosity comes at a real cost to herself and her mother's standard of living. Yet Emma is going full-speed-ahead at "getting better clients," not recognizing that that goal will come into conflict with Maddy's desire to help the community -- again, because she isn't listening. The blowup at the end of this chapter should be epic.
Fantastic interpretation. Maddy Bates wants to help just as much as Emma, but they go about it in very different ways. Emma is a bit more oblivious about the help. She also can't recognize when SHE needs help. She is right that she can help Maddy, but she doesn't realize that Maddy can also help her. It can be a mutually beneficial relationship.
Maddie Bates continues to be delightful, right down to her dialogues with her mother, vividly relived in every possible conversational context. :} The dreamy light in Emma's eyes as she contemplates the glory of an open bar at her party is a gleefully entertaining note on which to end the episode, joined with the hearty "Hell, yes!" From Harriet. Emma's expression in that moment reminds me of Steve Carell in the posters for the Forty Year Old Virgin.
Love how much this ties back to the source. Regarding the previous arc, was watching a different version and remembered that John and Isabella have an argument over whether or not to vacation at the seaside in the book, and Emma and Mr. K work together to resolve it- In case anyone still feels like that came out of left field.
Maddie is such a kind person to accept the payments her clients can make. I love her more and more. Granted, she would be difficult to spend a lot of time around, but she means well.
I trust the people calling Miss Bates "the new Collins" have not read the novel, because that's an egregious misreading. True, both can be annoying and/or provide comic relief, but one is utterly self-seeking beneath a facade of humility. The other is genuinely humble despite gaining some attention for verbosity.
Honestly, even in this adaptation there’s a notable difference! It seemed like everyone in the LBD knew Mr. Collins was well-meaning but intrusive and annoying, but treated him with some semblance of patience and kindness. Even Lizzie, who was so rude to him at the beginning, began to appreciate him as he was (to paraphrase Knightly lol). Maddie Bates is a bold personality with a propensity to miss boundaries (like trying to get knightly to lick jam of her inner!), but Emma seems to be the only person to find her truly grating. Everyone else can see that she is selfless and compassionate, and her disposition is bubbly and loud, but Emma think she’s superior to Maddie. And despite Maddie’s unwavering love and vocal support of Emma, it doesn’t help that Maddie holds the same regard for Jane!
Poor Alex with all those preserves. I thought that Maddie would deliver the new ones to him directly, and see all the jars he has on his desk. I really liked how it started in Alex's office. I guess Emma will be in her party planning mode soon, and I can't wait to see how they document the party. :)
Alex always knows Emma, Emma always seems to make mistakes (or at least lately, because this is going obviously downhill) and Harriet...well, she's always looking up to Emma and wanting to learn more with her "Hell yeah!" Hahah, I love that girl.
Miss Bates is so sweet. She goes out of her way to help other people at the expense of herself! As selfless as that is, it really just ends up hurting herself. I actually agree with Emma and hope she can help her.
I love this series way more than the movie Emma because the rapport between Emma and Knightley is so cute here that you really invest in their relationship
One of my favorite episodes so far, I think you guys have finally hit your stride with this series! I smiled as Maddy as soon as she came on screen and the ending with Emma and Harriet was perfect.
When she said “If there’s one thing the rich and powerful love, it’s attending overpriced events for a good cause,” I totally thought she was follow that up with “and there’s nothing I love more than throwing overpriced events for a good cause”
ha, those last two words were so cute. I gotta say I love the way they portrayed the characters in this. Bates does work to make other people's lives better too~
I am so glad you guys got this back on track. This episode is superb--Harriet's adorable "Hell yes!" with that adorable dress and I LOVE Emma's top! 80s Glam got an update&what better person to show it off?
Emma and Harriet's faces at the very end... it's like the girls are on a ship looking out to the horizon where all their dreams will come true! Apparently in the form of an open bar. :) Hahaha, so funny.
This one had me laughing out loud. Everyone has great guesses for who will be at the party. I'm just going along for the ride and content to leave the guessing to everyone else.
They could not have cast Maddy Bates better. She is annoying, but lovable. Youc an also clearly see how much she admires and respects Emma, and Emma plays her annoyance perfectly. Just this side of having a meltdown.

"Because she does the things you only talk about doing?" - Snarky Knightley strikes again!
"he needs more excitement in his life"
"he does."
I love Maddy's agreement there, so quick I almost missed it, haha.
"-and we will have our open bar."
"HELL YES!"

I love Harriet's "HELL YES!" SO CUTE AND FUNNY
"Mama! Now you can see everything!"
'Not with you standing in mah way'
;)
Best lines ever!
Love how much this ties back to the source.

"Hell yes!" Lol I love Harriet.
That 'HELL YES' at the end was so cute XD
it was so adorable i almost fell over c:

PEACHAVANIP!
How come you're watching these?!
ddelfao Why would he not?
No reason :) Just thought it was funny that he did.
ddelfao
It's cool! I just love watching the show as much as I love being on it!
You. I can't wait until you tell her you love her! *screams internally*
Love Harriet's dress!!
Emma's character is really starting to fill out, and it's being reflected in the others as well.
God, this cast is so likable.
'HELL YES! ' awh I love Harriet
Harriet's dress is gorgeous!
Agree! Perfect for her.
Haha I love all the different faces Alex makes!
i wanna meet her "MAAMMA!!" :)
Haha when Emma says, "More experimental?" like she's genuinely afraid.
Poor Alex with all those preserves. I thought that Maddie would deliver the new ones to him directly, and see all the jars he has on his desk. I really liked how it started in Alex's office. I have a feeling Elton is going to be at that party...
With a certain significant other. :)
Happy See-Saw Unicorn Buffet? Oh, Harriet. Why would you ever leave such an establishment? hehe
Maddy's trading skills are inspiring and brilliant. I mean that from the bottom of my heart.
somehow she reminds me of Ricky Collins. Talking lots, always talking about Jane, stuff like that...
Collins came off as more pretentious, though, while Maddie seems much more genuine
Hey friends! Sorry for talking so fast, just wanted to clarify that I said "happy seastar unicorn buffet"
God this keeps on getting better and better!
Miss Bates is so sweet. She goes out of her way to help other people at the expense of herself! As selfless as that is, it really just ends up hurting herself. I actually agree with Emma and hope she can help her.
*cough* Show off the preserves at the party for tasting/purchase *cough* Money *cough*
............as if somebody would want to buy "watermelon olive and rhubarb" jam...
The Caitasaurus
That's what tasting is for.
ALSO
You meant watermelon, olive, and rhubarb jam. You said a list of items, that requires commas.
I need that "Hell yes!" as my text alert and "MAmuh!" as my email alert STAT
"Peguavanip!" Liking for that, right away.
+Katie Sauce The look on Alex's face when he sniffs it gets me every time. :P
I love how this series is progressing!
The look on her face at the thought of the open bar.... priceless.
Omg Harriet's dress looks soooo cute on her
Always with the open bar.
Her face when she said that...it was like the heavens had opened =D
Sarah Helt And then Harriet's "hell yes" was so energetic and adorable!
That "Hell yes!" at the end was great :D
I'm not one to gossip... classic Black aunty/grams line...
i am loving the clueless reference @ 1:14
Nessa did u know that Clueless was based on Emma?
AveryEducationChannel I sure did!
I love this story line. It just got 10 times better.
The cast(ing) of this show is just so plain wonderful!
Blueberry jalapeno actually sounds amazing. A friend of mine made me blackberry chilli, and it was to die for.
I can't get over how perfectly Miss Bates plays her character...
I love that aparently mama is Nigerian, judging by the brief accent imitation.
Just love how Harriet is dressed
I was hoping someone said it.
Agreed - that style really suits her :)
That Maddy Bates is a hoot!
Every time Maddy mentions her Mama crack up. It's been my favorite part of the past two eps.
that"hell yes" at the end cracked me up.
also Maddie is my favourite character so far!
I can see how Maddie Bates can be infuriating for Emma.
But at least she's adorably infuriating.
When she said “If there’s one thing the rich and powerful love, it’s attending overpriced events for a good cause,” I totally thought she was follow that up with “and there’s nothing I love more than throwing overpriced events for a good cause”
Emma's face at the end killed me
I'm really, really loving these episodes at the moment.
Harriet's dress! And the acting! AHHH!
Harriet is just the cutest thing
"Hell yes!" I love Harriet
Harriet is so cute!!! :)
ha, those last two words were so cute.
I gotta say I love the way they portrayed the characters in this. Bates does work to make other people's lives better too~
"not with you standing in my way" hahahhahah nice line.
"… so close!" Oh Emma. You try. :)
Aww I'm starting to really like the Harriet and Emma friendship (especially the ending
I loved the genuine excitement about the open bar LOL
Can't wait to see the party and - maybe - meet Maddie's MAMA!
Harriet's outfits are getting cuter at every episode
I love Maddie, and how she gets paid in favors. She's so sweet!
I've always liked Emma Approved but these past few episodes have been particularly enjoyable
Omg this Miss Bates is the best choice ever. I've always loved the character and this actress is so funny
Bahahaha, I love Harriet's ending statement. ;)
I am so glad you guys got this back on track. This episode is superb--Harriet's adorable "Hell yes!" with that adorable dress and I LOVE Emma's top! 80s Glam got an update&what better person to show it off?
"Thank you, Mr. Knightley. Your approval means ever so much to me."
I love Harriet's dress in this episode
"Blood orange"? Really guys? It's fucking red.
I know, just making a joke ;)
How to spot a Tumblr user 101.
She's so pretentious.
Pff, slaves of fashion.
Harriet's hell yes gives me life
really loving the energy in this ep. keep it coming!
"I can't thank you enough!"
"No...you can't."
Loved Emma in this episode! So excited for where the story is going.
You've never gotten along with her...Because she does the things you only talk about doing.
So accurate!
argh i cant wait to meet Jane. im so excited! Also Harriet was work'n that dress.
This Maddie Bates is hilarious.
I'm really enjoying this version of Miss Bates, it's really sweet and vivacious
I want Harriet's wardrobe!
I think Alex looks at her lips at 0:56 awwwwwwwwwwwwww
Oh Harriet, you're so adorable!
I love Maddie Bates! She's perfect.
These have been so good! Also Maddie's necklace? I want itttttt.
love Maddy's "MAMA!"
Goodness me, I thought Emma was wearing pajamas for a moment.
Love Harriet's whole look.
Also, "MAMA!"
They could not have cast Maddy Bates better. She is annoying, but lovable. Youc an also clearly see how much she admires and respects Emma, and Emma plays her annoyance perfectly. Just this side of having a meltdown.
Miss Bates is gorgeous here! I love her! :)
omg...i want harriet's dress like right now
Thanx! I love that site! I got my cupcake teapot from them
Link is in the description :)
Harriet I love you and your outfit in this one!!
The open jar of preserves and the Mac keyboard on the same desk is stressing me out.
Emma's trying. This is good. MAMA(!) Bates sounds sassy! It was nice to see some Harriet development at the end.
"Hell yes!"
Emma is giving me tahani vibes from the good place hahaha. Helping people to one up someone she is jealous of
MAMA!! XD Loving Maddie Bates so far!
MAMA! Now you can see everything! 🤣
I like both Emma's and Harriet's outfits here. And Harriet is actually kind of cute in this episode (versus annoying like she sometimes is).
'Happy Sea Star Unicorn Buffet' Ummmm, okay.
