Every laptop should have video in! It would be great for taking Nintendo switch along without worrying about an extra panel or if the place has a tv. I've seen quite a few hotels/rooms where they purposeful block all the inputs to the tv.
Excellent review! Was very happy to see more than the typical unboxing, specs, benchmarks, and gameplay that pretty much all other reviews seem to follow. When looking at a device like the Duo, people really need a lot more information about actual use of the device to make an informed decision, so thanks for putting in the extra time on that. I ordered the Duo day 1 and can't wait for it to arrive. It will be replacing my WM2 as my primary desktop and productivity laptop when traveling. I use an eGPU with 2 vertically stacked displays at home and the Duo will allow me to keep that same layout when traveling for work. Love it!
For some reason this reminds me of a scene from a particular comedy movie where a magazine centerfold is opened and it keeps unfolding and unfolding and unfolding... Actually, "GPD Centerfold" might have been a better name for this thing. I don't completely hate the idea, but this thing seems way more unwieldy than just keeping a travel monitor in your bag for occasions where you need a 2nd one.
The *only* scenario where this is actually better than a normal laptop is when you absolutely need an additional monitor but can't fit another monitor on your desk and have no place to put it.
If you use your laptop anywhere that's not your home/office workspace, then it has a very valid use case. If you want to setup in a coffee shop, or library (especially if you're a student), having a second screen for productivity is huge.
This thing has a great use case for students. Dual screens is such an insane boost to productivity, and being able to put it into tablet mode for writing notes would be awesome. I'd slap a matte screen protector on the top screen so that when I flip it into regular laptop mode, the 'mirror' issue (as well as possible dust/fingerprints) wouldn't be as big of a deal, and it would be more nice to write on with the matte texture. I love this device- but I'm a bit wary about buying from GPD. Their QA is far from stellar, and because there are two hinges, it's far more likely to become damaged. The repair/RMA process is probably nonexistent or far from convenient for anyone not living in China, so you're pretty much out of luck if there's a problem with it.
I know lots of people say similar, but I just wanted to mention I have no interest in this laptop, I just enjoy your videos so much Russ. I appreciate the time and dedication you put into each one to make an informative and helpful video. It's super inspiring!
Reading through the comments here was really interesting. When people see a laptop with 2 screens they say "It's not cool" and "Who asked for this" even though this would be great for people who work with text a lot. When they see a 2-fold dumbphone without a use case UA-camrs gush over it and "have to have it" ?!
I'd argue that a "laptop" with 2 screens that stands about 3 feet tall is no longer a laptop or at least probably not something to consider using in the same fashion. Just having the two screens alone makes it a super niche device that you;' probably want to have sit in a stable place like on a deck or table to begin with. It's more like a portable workstation like you demonstrated than a literal "laptop" PC and even an artist would probably rather it be propped up on a desk like a wacom cintque than hold it in their lap trying to draw.
In my home we only have 1 desk with 1 monitor. So if my wife and I are both working from home, only one can have the desk and thus the second monitor. This laptop, janky as it is, would solve that problem.
This new Strix Point APU is crazy good when it comes to performance, if you are willing to drop a few settings/use upscale+frame gen, it can even play current year titles too. Emulation performance is great too, and it just sips power for most of the time. Though it scales well with higher TDPs too, in my mini PC I'm running it at 65W TDP for demanding games (regular browsing needs around 6-10W).
This feels like an engineer trying to come up with the next big thing without considering practical use cases. Odds are if you're in a situation where you have a laptop and you need a second screen, you're probably going to be sitting down with whatever that use case is, which means you'll probably be close enough to home or office that it would be much more practical and straightforward to simply have a laptop with HDMI out and a spare HDMI cable in your laptop bag and just hook it up to a traditional monitor. Like, I'm just not entirely sure who this is for outside of maybe people who do a lot of audio recording or like architects or something
Honestly I'm tempted, but thats because I'm a gadget addict and compulsive upgrader. However, what would REALLY be great would be a single screen version of this. Because all the other stuff is pretty great - HX370, AMOLED screen, 80WHr battery, USB-A, USB-C, full SD card slot - and ETHERNET!!!! No small form factor machines have ethernet anymore, and I bemoan that! But having said all that, I can get just about all of those things in a gaming laptop from Asus, Lenovo etc, plus have a RTX4060 or RTX4070 or so for the same or lower price. Either way, this is a really interesting device. But the other concern is what you said about repairs. If I have to pay a fortune to ship it to GPD if something goes wrong? I have an Asus gaming laptop right now, I paid for the best buy warranty - if anything goes wrong I can just take it there. That's definitely a concern with these expensive machines from overseas, you don't have the easy return or repair options.
Seems like the thing I think I’d want until I realize I could get about the same effect with a portable monitor and an arm that grips to a table. I once worked this way in Athens for a few weeks and was a great experience! 🔥
I learned my lesson with GPD. They don't support their products after release. So if you have any problems with your device ESPECIALLY with something as delicate as a laptop with thin hinges and multiple screens, don't count on them to help you. Maybe you'll have luck within the first 3 months of release cause they'll still be in production and maybe they can actually honor a warranty but I wouldn't count on it. Plus their build quality is meh. They're still better than AYANEO but I really would advise against buying from either of these companies unless you have a lot of money and don't mind it going to a product that may only last a year or two at the price of a device you would expect to last at least 6-8 years.
Hell yeah Fugazi, and now At the Drive in. You got cool t-shirts and grear taste in music. You should definitely do a video about your vinyls collection (it's still retro in my eyes, and game too, because you do play these vinyls ;-) )
I think if I was that concerned with emulating the DS or 3DS, this would be an expensive but good option. Otherwise, I think I would have loved something like this when going to school and needing multiple monitors. I also think this could work for streaming, in that one screen could be for chat and then use the other, possible 4, screens for the game and set up.
Hope it's end-user serviceable after warranty ends. Had issues with batteries beyond the warranty with past models. Can't source em because they don't produce them aymore. This being a traditional sized laptop, I could put in probably ly something average sized. Hinge-screen components may be double the nightmare.
Great review on the laptop, but WHAT THE HECK Russ!.. I see you using a Ambernic controller that you have not even did a video for you yet 😮 I will take yours please 😂
I love how honest this guy is. Too many UA-camrs nowadays get sponsored and don't mention any flaws. I'd rather know upfront about some issues than have to return the device later. Thank You Russ!
Buy a good normal laptop at a reasonable price, and get a mobile touch monitor at your preferred size for next to nothing. And then you use a single USB-C cable from the laptop to power and drive the external monitor.
Great productivity machine! Great for video and photo editing. I would not use this for gaming. Wish they could make one with screens beside, but centered with the keyboard. Like a Y shape or something.
If ASUS can do a 2 screen OLED with one being passive 3D why couldn't GPD do that 3D with the lower screen then we can have perfect 3DS emulation. edit: What is GPD's contact info for email? Went to the website and got blocked on a security concern.
"Those old lan parties that the people used to have" ... thank you, I felt my hair go grey during this sentence :p I do have to hand it to GPD - their ideas might not always work out and I have heard mixed things about support and durability, but they have never released a boring device. This one won't be for me ... but their win max 2 is still an aspirational device for me ^^ Also: God damnit GPD, fix your certificate, it has run out a week ago!
Finally, the definitive device for emulating DS games.
DS? Over 3DS?
😂
literally my first thought :D
@FOREVERSHAMEDONLINE it's called sarcasm buddy
😂😂
But is it pocketable?
Depends on your pocket. If it can fit the amount of money this thing costs I guess you can fit the whole thing itself
Depends on which currency we are talking about, in Zimbabwe Dollar you will need at least a USS Gerald Ford size pocket to be able to buy this thing.

Yo dog, I heard you like laptops, so I put a laptop on your laptop

ow yes !
Finally a laptop to keep those predatory women away at cafes
Every laptop should have video in!
It would be great for taking Nintendo switch along without worrying about an extra panel or if the place has a tv. I've seen quite a few hotels/rooms where they purposeful block all the inputs to the tv.
Why wouldn't you just play the switch in handheld mode and have the screen closer to your face
Forget the Switch, but I agree that more laptops should have video in. It's very rare.

Anbernic Gamepad 😳
Honestly, the built-in microphone sounded really good to me. The camera was only okay, but quite serviceable for a laptop zoom call.

It was announced some days ago, but still under review embargo

this laptop kinda reminds me of the dual screen GBA SP that the retro future made a while ago
The *only* scenario where this is actually better than a normal laptop is when you absolutely need an additional monitor but can't fit another monitor on your desk and have no place to put it.
aaand for that they have monitor arms that extend vertically. there's literally no use for this laptop and it was a terrible product decision.

Oh yeah, that is a weird "BONUS" for 3DS and WiiU and DS as well, the dual screen.
This would honestly be fantastic for video editing
There's a reason companies are straying away from the word "laptop" and using "notebook" instead. Most "laptops" don't work on laps so well.
Russ likes a one-armed scissor and a 2-screened laptop
Looks like a fun device

I can't help but to feel like the Strix Point APU isn't going to be the leap in performance that many were expecting.
Hmm... Interesting that no one is mentioning the yet to be released Anbernic controller he uses in the review...
Brilliant laptop, that does not everyone.
Its good to see companies innovating.
Can you capture 2nd screen by laptop itself while console pluged to 2nd screen usb-c ?
For GPD, it generally feels so odd to see them doing an actual laptop full size. Expected a handheld of some sort

'Good speeds for Hawaii' yeah, you ain't kidding 😂
Yup. Very niche. That second screen has to be faced outward when closed. I feel it will be used more for home than mobile.

I wonder if showing 3DS and Wii U emulation would be fine if you only showed third-party games, but I understand that you can't really risk it.
Give me a 3rd vertical screen and I'll re-enroll in college and sit in the front row.
Obviously I don't have the laptop but, could you not mirror the screens to make local co-op easier?
