Thanks for the review and overview! Also a nice surprise to see that you used the first picture I ever uploaded to BGG (that one with the sheep and the moors). I look forward to playing this game again soon!

I just played the expansion for the first time and I really liked the ditches. You can utilize it to flip the back row tiles without having to go to a flip action and it improves the fields for plowing at the same time. We discussed if the tea action was maybe too powerful, but at least it kept things going at a good pace. Some of the trade ship destinations seem a little underpowered though? Or maybe that’s just me. In any case I really enjoyed the expansion

I love it that the game can be expanded now to 3 persons. I only hope this expansion can work with the Dutch version “Friesche Velden”.

I like the ditches because they solve a problem for 3 players - Limited access to the space to flip your bottom (moors?) over; Since in a 3.5 year game with 3 players instead of 2 wanting to flip them that would be a little tight.
I think it's good that; rather than have a new space doing pretty much the same thing, they gave a little extra utility (sheep fields, improving farming) with the opportunity, they're a nice option ^^.
On the 3 player setup: It works, but I think I'd have preferred something like viticulture-esque 'mama/papa' cards that dictated your starting upgrades - That would be fantastic for new players to give direction (Choosing upgrades as a new player to the game was AP inducing as it gets).

Interesting point on the ditches. :-)
With the starting setup, cards would have helped, but I just tell people to pick a theme or profession and follow it through - so they will pick something like baker, farmer, shepherd etc.

You should post a tea recs video, or maybe tea & game pairings!

Ditches do seem minor, but thematically it works. Ditches do improve farm lands. I always like thematic mechanics/rules.

Just got Fields of Arle! Favorite game by Uwe Rosenberg, so far, is Glass Road.

That's the one I hate from him! :P Well unless it's 2P, but with 4P I don't go near it.

Luke Hector Glass Road with 4 is at least a fast game.

Alice Moore ish but yeah it's not too long, just far too chaotic.

Itll be interesting to see how it compares with the expansion to Caverna coming out, if it pushes Caverna up on the preference chart

I'm a little wary on the basis that this is some home-made expansion made public, but considering we've been gagging for a Caverna expansion I'm more than excited to see it in action. Could it push Caverna back over Fields of Arle, who knows?

Does anyone know why Uwe limited the base game to 2? Has anyone heard him opine on this question? Just due to the sheer size/scope of game?

No idea, but frankly, I think the table presence and complexity would just make more than even 3 players too much.

Yeah, and perhaps to keep the base game at a more accessible price. The game has such a large footprint for each player, that adding in the components needed for even a single additional player would need a decent chunk of extra box space and probably bump up the price some more.

What if I didn't love the base game (or Caverna), due to tightness of gameplay? I more enjoy Odin style.
