How to Sculpt a Mandala

0:08 Creating guidelines with ruler for accurate carving. Carving the 12 points around the circumference with a loop tool. Continuing to carve mandala pattern toward the center.
1:27 Creating impresssions with a ruler to create depth in the mandala pattern.
2:45 Carving along the edge so the mandala wraps around the piece. Following the pattern along the sides by creating impressions.
3:45 Assembling the Flat bottle shape. Scoring and slipping the bottle spout.
This mandala will have 12 points around the circumference to signify the 12 zodiac signs and the continuous cycles we are part of. This is a little meditation I like to incorporate into my functional pottery and it serves as my signature.
Mandalas are deeply rooted in the psyche of us all. These patterns are woven into the fabric of the universe and are revealed in many forms. From patterns in flowers, the movement of the planets, the cycles of time and so much more.

I love this. Is it a solid piece of clay or is it thrown some how ie empty?
