BFO is used for SSB (ham and aircraft) reception.

Definitely. It's way more fun to tune around standard shortwave broadcast stations with the BFO-switch in the 'OFF' position...the radio'll make a lot less ear-splitting squealing. ;-)

Excellent! But why are you using BFO while tuning broadcast bands? Whistling will disappear if BFO is switched off.
