  • Kosuke Teramura workshop tour.
Kosuke Teramura is a potter who carried on traditional techniques and materials of Mashiko, Tochigi.
He makes glaze from "Terayama-white-soil" called phantom soil.
Teramura Kosuke was born in Tokyo. The first pottery he met is a mud glazed pottery in Mashiko. A component of that glaze is the Terayama-white-soil.
The Terayama-white-soil is valuable material now because landslide made difficult to collect the soil.
In his training days, Teramura Kosuke got a chance that he take over the Terayama-white-soil for a lifetime as a successor of Mashiko ware.
He mixed it and the ashes of crops from near the workshop and the Terayama-white-soil little by little and studied it because there weren’t much literature on the phantom soil.
His own glazes were born that way. They have the unique soft gloss glass layer and material colors floating on the surface.
