Fantástico quinteto nro III de Wagner con la excepcional voz de la Sra Sutherland quien brillara durante toda su hermosa carrera aquí en la tierra. Hoy lo hace en la casa divina con sus colegas .Chile🙏🇨🇱
A very beautiful performance from all 5. But to have voices of the beauty and caliber of Sutherland and Vickers singing this music is a rare treat. Even the greatest German sopranos don't ride that phrase up to the final Bb with such ease and amplitude.
Joan gives you life here
Joan's opening lines are so silvery beautiful and smooth of course I cried.
Vickers is wonderful also,
This is ravishing. Needless to say Joan and Jon stand out in more ways than one!
How wonderful that the music loving Earl of Harewood, the Queen's first cousin, kept these and his other private recordings of Joan singing Wagner from the fifties and agreed to release them.
Glorious here and how I wish Jon- Joan and Gobbi sang "Otello" in the 60s wow.
Holy hell. this is incredible!
What a wonderful cast. Sutherland and Vickers are outstanding.
German sounds very natural in her mouth, and I have always loved hearing her sing Wagner when took opportunity to do so.
Hako2004 Of course, she’s singing in English here! But her diction was always pretty suspect, so she might just as well have sung in German or any other language.
Too funny as it's English!
Never new Vickers sang Wagner! (albeit in English translation).
There's no mention of this in his biography: JON VICKERS, A HERO'S LIFE by Jeannine Williams.
MISTAKE: "never knew Vickers sang Walther from DIE MESITERSINGER VON NURNBERG..."
Of course I know he sang Wagner: his PARSIFAL, SIEGMUND and TRISTAN were peerless! (I had the fortune of seeing him in Buenos Aires in 1971, when he sang his first-ever TRISTAN UND ISOLDE opposite the wonderful Birgit Nilsson).
This was a concert performance which included the Meistersinger Quintet. Although Sutherland did sing Eva complete, Vickers was not her Walther. As far as I know he never sang the role complete.
beautiful picture
Fascinating to hear Sutherland's voice in Wagner at this early stage. Too bad that she did not record her Wagner arias until so late in her recording career.
This is beautiful!!!
Sutherland sounds wonderful in nearly any composer’s music. Some people have mentioned her German language skills, but of course she’s singing in English here! But her diction was always pretty suspect, so she might just as well have sung in German or any other language. To my taste though, her glory was in bel canto; Wagner sits in the middle of her range, and the thrilling part of her voice lay higher.
Even in Wagner.....she is supreme
@Homoclassicus If I'm not mistaken, this was a studio shot of her as Donna Anna.
4lougehrig
UR right. Wiener Staatsoper, 1959 (shortly after her Covent Garden LUCIA success).
That's a beautiful photo. Do you know which role Sutherland was in when they took that photo?
Im guessing, Donna Anna.
Never new Vickers sang this opera. Must have been the only time, right?
I don't think he ever sang the entire role
