I watched a documentary a long time ago about the pyramids and they interviewed this 97 year old man who said that when they were kids they used to swim in underground tunnels that went from the pyramids to the river, history is best served by the people that lived it instead of those discovering it.

I should make a correction, AbD’el Hakim Awyan was only in his 80’s (not 97, bad memory on my part).
To get the full scope of what AbD’el Hakim Awyan is offering in the way of historical information you really need to watch the entire Documentary, I forgot how interesting this documentary was so I think I’ll watch it again myself, good luck on your research of the Pyramids.

This is an excerpt from Princes Of the Stars:
"Egypt was such a place; many times were these lands ruined, their population ravaged by invaders, plagues or global catastrophes. Knowledge was lost then reinvented, only to be forgotten once more, when its guardians reused priceless scrolls to write down the incoherent ramblings of inbred lords. Monuments pillaged and later “rebuilt” by incompetent, vain kings, who knew not how those ancient marvels were built, nor for what purpose. Some rulers, in their moronic ineptitude, attempted to replicate the glory of old by mass use of muscle power alone, only to fail in a most spectacular way. Grandiose libraries were repurposed, turned into temples of fake gods, while fool kings made ancient shrines their palaces. Oftentimes those rulers stamped these ancient monoliths with their names, claiming that it was indeed them who had constructed the temple complex, the shrine or the grand hall."

My mother used to travel to Egypt twice every year and also run tours for all her friends, she always talked of all these tunnels everywhere and all this architecture that was hidden to the public, her guide she had used to show her all the places that the public can’t go! The reason the Egyptian govt refuses to disclose new finds is that they are not actually Egyptians by race and therefore do not want to display ancient history because it isn't the history of theirs, such as Zahi Hawass. It's embarrassing for modern Egyptians knowing that they are in absolutely no way related to the ancients. And their current culture shows this.
Modern Egyptians grossly confuse themselves with the ancients, and will hide any finds that solidify these things I just said.

Glad Ben touched on the precision symmetry of statue faces in ancient Egypt. The precise execution of the statue stoneworks point to advanced technology being involved. The perfectly symmetric statue face is on another level above precision machined stone jars and precise granite boxes. What is implied is fluid compound 3D CNC technology was in possession of the ancient stone workers. Super Computer-Numeric-Control. The ancients had computers and coding technology at their disposal.
Secondly, the precision pharaoh statues imply a cultural continuity between the ancient builders and the new era classic Egyptians. The Egyptians themselves make the claim of being direct descendants of the ancient building culture.
Suppression of information isn't surprising, or is it unexpected.

Here is a long shot, based on various ancient stories from around the world. There was a time in our distant past, when our creators, the 'gods' lived with humans. They taught us their knowledge and helped us build a world for ourselves. Humans, due to their nature, wound up using the knowledge to harm each other and the world around them. The creators gathered up the best of us and brought them underground. They then lay waste to the surface of the planet, to get rid of the worst of us. When the world was suitable to live on again, the people were brought back up to the surface. The people used the ancient knowledge to rebuild. However, some of the people used the knowledge to cause harm again. At that time, the creators shut down the various sites where the ancient knowledge was being used for harm. They didn't give the people the knowledge again, but instead stored it in the underground cities until we matured enough to have it again.
In the American south west, there are two places, Chaco Canyon and Black Canyon Mesa. Black Canyon Mesa was apparently the location of one of the underground cities. Chaco Canyon was built by the people after they came back to the surface. Note that the stone work is very fine indeed and in no way resembles anything built by north Americans. The Hopi Indians tell the story of when the people came back to the surface. They say the people of Chaco Canyon wielded great power and the ability to manipulate nature itself. They don't speak much of it, because if the ancient underground city was to be found, people might learn to 'speak the word', which is to use the ancient knowledge, which could be used to cause harm again. Telling too much of the story would cause too many people to investigate and possibly learn something they shouldn't. To them, the ancient knowledge should remain hidden.
In Turkey, there is an underground city called Derinkuyu. It and others like it nearby, was where humans lived underground while the surface was destroyed. When they came out again, they built Gobekli Tepe. There, just like Chaco Canyon, people entrusted with the ancient knowledge used it once again to cause harm. Chaco Canyon was taken apart, to insure nobody would use the site again. Gobekli Tepe was completely buried, for the same reason.
In Egypt, the labyrinth was the city where humans lived underground. When they came back to the surface, they had to rebuild the city that was lost when the surface was destroyed. The great pyramid was still standing and was rebuilt, but not used, as it was part of the old tech that they no longer understood. The old knowledge was kept to a very small group called the Magi, who protected it and kept it out of the hands of the people, even to this day.
The old stories talk a lot about this stuff. All of them warn that regaining the ancient knowledge will lead to destruction. So, they let it remain buried out of fear that it will all happen again. Could this be why Egypt won't pursue certain sites? Again, this is all just a series of stories. But when Egypt acts this way about certain sites... it says something important.

We live in a world of mobile electronics with the capability of storing and streaming large amounts of data, text, video, and audio, very quickly. Surely video and images of anything discovered in recent years could and should be put out on the internet instantly or asap, at the moments of discovery. Furthermore, if someone knows of a discovery and the government is limiting access then people should be willing to risk their freedom to get all evidence of that out, even if they have to sneak or break into the area.

You’re right we do have the technology, and we also know that nothing posted on the internet is ever truly anonymous, so these people who could consider posting these findings also consider being found out and “suicided” so it’s not a technological bottleneck I guess it’s more, of a willingness to become a martyr for publishing something bottleneck

    It's not rotting.
Something tells me that these chambers are designed to withstand water damage, and like the great pyramid, come from a time before the great flood, a time that is remembered in the proverb that says: nothing that is now has not already come before.
In revelation it says: If they say: "he is in the hidden chamber" - do not go. If they say: "he is in the desert" do not go.

The concept that the Egyptian government is covering up something that might lead to the Egyptian government bringing in millions upon millions of increased tourism dollars, doesn’t make sense to me based on what I know of their ruling class.

Embarrassment since they unintentionally destroyed it. Vanity and pride. Or maybe there's information in there they consider damaging. Hieroglyphs for example that could explain or confirm certain things they're not willing to aknowledge. If there was more than 1 dark age and it was confirmed, that would have MASSIVE ripple effects on everything that was seen as fact previously.
Hell, if you really want to go tinfoil hat, you could even argue that it was intentionally lost and they're just upset someone actually managed to find it again.

They probably keep it so under wraps because in reality they found all the treasures and all the secrets and all the ancient burial sites. Took all the treasure and stuff, melted it down and brought endless curses onto the world. Sounds a bit silly but I think that's what happened

I wish I could remember more but there was an article years back where a guy discovered a cave/cave system in Egypt, I think it was around the Giza region, and it led to some underground ruins/passages and when he went to get the permits to formally excavate and explore he was denied by Dr. Zahi Hawass saying something along the lines of (I'm paraphrasing at best) "We know all there is to know about Giza so there's no need." I remember thinking what an obtuse train of thought that was. Again, I might not have all the details correct and I'd have to dig to see if I could find the article. No pun intended.
