I remember buying the original Star Trek TNG and X-Files DVD sets. They were $70 and $90 per season. So the prices we're paying for full series on Bluray are great.
The only problem is they didn’t port over the special features from the dvd sets, which for us completionist we’ll have to keep the DVD’s for the features instead of reducing space on are shelves ☹️
Yeah I mean really the price of this set is very affordable and as I said in the video I expect this to drop to $50 for a sale price within a couple years. The picture quality is way better than the dvds from my perspective as well.
If you think the DVD box sets take up space you should see the VHS season box sets.

I also leave the plastic on but first place a strip of clear tape (not "magic" tape) all the way around the edge you are going to cut open. This prevents the plastic from tearing right away. This idea has kept many of my sets in perfect condition. I only wished there was a reference to which episode is on what disc. Otherwise, I'm pretty satisfied.
That sounds like a good idea.
It was originally created in 4:3 and cropped to 16:9 for widescreen. It was produced around the time when widescreen was 'just around the corner'. All the shots were framed in 4:3 with a view to being cropped to 16:9. This is what gave the show is more 'cinematic' look when viewed in the original 4:3 aspect ratio, and why the widescreen 16:9 version just doesn't look as good, have the same 'feel' to it, and sometimes just doesn't 'work' in some scenes.
For anyone with doubts about how Babylon 5 was originally filmed, one of the 'extras' in the DVD boxed set that is a complete collection of everything Babyloln 5 clearly explains how and why it was filmed the way it was. If you're handy with the pause button, you can freeze-frame where one of the scenes is being shot and clearly see the camera viewfinder in which it is clearly visible it is being filmed in 4:3 and marked out so it can be cropped to 16:9 and (mostly) still work.
Now they need to do a set with the 5 tv movies, Crusades spin off, legend of the rangers and the lost tales to complete the Babylon series totally on blu
That would be great if they did that as I only own Crusades on dvd out of those and of course I'm sure these would be an upgrade over the dvds. It probably depends on how this set sells.
Cool unboxing I heard cool things about Babylon 5 complete series on blu ray I might get it soon at one point its been awhile since I watched Babylon 5 my favorite science fiction series from the 90s
It doesn’t have any bells and whistles but it is quite affordable for the whole series and the picture quality is solid besides the pilot movie.

Yes it is. I don't mind the packaging too much.
While I am glad Babylon 5 is on bluray finally; but from what I can see from both UK and your unboxing is I wish they had went jacket slips to hold the blu ray discs similar to what I have seen with bluray Stargate Collection with all three series Stargate Atlantis, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Universe. That being said I am glad I am getting mine from the US; but I still worry about broke clasps that hold the discs.
Yeah I mean the packaging of the item definitely isn't optimal but it is good enough and I think the price is pretty fair.
Thanks for the unboxing video, I bought the set too, the packaging could be better, but oh well, I'm just happy to have Babylon 5 on Bluray! me and my friends have noticed while watching the episodes, some of the CGI shots especially in space are jerky, or studder? we tried it on different TV's and the results are the same, have you noticed this while watching it? and also the Gathering, they put on the set is pretty much unwatchable, it's really bad, very jerky and the whole image in warped into Widescreen? the old DVD is way better.
The Gathering looks pretty terrible for sure. The CGI shots are bad overall but I haven't noticed them being jerky. I think the pic quality overall is a solid upgrade over dvd for the most part.

You should retry The Flash. Unless, comic book stuff is not your cup of tea/coffee.
The cast and acting that occurs, is great. The story that spreads through the seasons is great. Besides, what Villian is the showcase for this season and the next etc...
The surprises/stories in store for you in The Flash, you're going to love.
Also, make sure you buy the movie collection to Babylon 5. They are only DVD however. The first movie did come with B5 Blu ray edition.

There are so many options for Babylon 5. You can get the DVDs to 16:9 that has all the movies, but it isn't updated. Or you can get the Blu-Ray, which is back to 4:3 and is GLORIOUS HD remastered, but you don't get the movies!!

Glad to finally have the set in HD over my old DVD sets, however as a UK owner i agree the multi stacking method of holding the discs isnt great, getting the bottom ones off, the discs bend worryingly. I dont mind the blue colour.
Yeah the UK one looked worse.
Do you know if the US discs are multi-regional, I'm from the UK and your packaging is better than ours. Also, i was told 'The Gathering' pilot is 16.9 and looks bad cause it's standard def and certainly cropped if they have it at that screen size.
Pretty sure it would be region free as it is WB. The Gathering indeed looks bad.

This looks way better case that some other reviewers showed it all messy. Thanks :) still prefered would have been case per season but for the price and for the actual content we finally got its all i can ask.
Yes that would definitely be preferred but I'm not having issues with how it is.

Looks like a pretty cheap cash grab. I bought them on iTunes a couple of years ago and the quality was great. The physical Blu Rays Will probably be a little bit better. However, even though I'm all for physical media, I think I'll wait until I grab one of those.

@@PMacMovies I actually got it on sale just now. Arrived two days ago, though it is the UK version, which has worse packaging with this kind of stacked system, but the discs work and only a couple were loose. The Gathering looks actually worse than my old DVD because it is cropped 16:9, while the UK DVD had the original 4:3 aspect ratio. Anyway, Babylon 5 is my favorite science fiction show and it's great to have it in really good quality on physical media.
One thing that I didn't mention, but is worth it imo, other than The Gatehring, the show looks great! Never better. The non-VFX shots which they could take from the negatives look amazing and hold a candle to the likes of TNG/ TOS R. The Upscaled VFX shots are of course more and more numerous and it's a shame that all the spectacle is "only" in upscaled material, but given their budget they look really good and definitely miles above the awful washed out DVD image quality. The show even with this caveat has never looked better. Now, I won't be greedy, but how about a Box 2 with the various Movies and dare I say, Crusade?

I really don't like this type of packaging, It doesn't take much effort to put each season in individual cases. I'll most likely wait for a price drop.
I feel the same way. I got the Dr Who collection and some of the discs were double or triple stack under one clip. It was horrible.
Packaging is crap but remember you are getting the complete series for only just over $100 where i live anyway. They went with selling it cheap.
@@SpruceMoose-iv8un Look at The Expense complete series which was just released, each season has its own individual case. It's not just packaging there are no special features. I just feel WB could have done a better job with this release.
It's not optimal but I suspect that the separate cases must be a decent chunk of change and they are trying to cut costs. Especially because it's unclear how this item will sell for them.

Even as a fan, this release is atrocious. Nothing was done, even not touching up the CGI. Star trek did it better. WB needs to make more of an effort.
I agree, fyi i read something back when the DVD set was released that they lost the original CGI files so to redo the CGI they would have to pay a CGI company to watch the show and recreate from what they watch, expensive. But i have to add theirs enough of us to warrent it.
I would say that Star Trek has a much bigger fan base so they knew they would sell a lot and be able to make money off of it. With Babylon 5, I think it's hard to predict how this will sell.
It's CRAP! I got it. The packaging is cheap, discs stacked on top of each other, and all it is is just a bluray transfer of the standard Def you see on the dvds. Massive disappointment! And it's NOT complete. It doesn't include the movies!
It is NOT "a Blu-ray transfer of the standard DVD's," except for the pilot "The Gathering," which was upscaled because they no longer have a film master of that movie. But all 110 episodes were Remastered in their original 4:3 format, upscaled to 2k, including the CG effects sequences, and then downscaled to 1080p.

B5 was NOT originally filmed in 4:3 but in widescreen because they knew hi-def was around the corner. It's been in a few 'making of' shorts and in several articles around the internet. "Upscaling' and 'downscaling' is not remastering. This set was made on the cheap and that's what it is.
@@CowboyRobot2000The special effects were originally rendered as 4:3. To match the 16x9 live action scenes, the effects scenes on the DVDs were zoomed in and cropped, which is why they look so bad. The 4:3 Blu-ray release restores the effects to their original resolution. The live action scenes were originally broadcast in 4:3, too.

@CowboyRobot2000 Okay, genius - Here's a question for you: WHY was it both impractical and cost prohibitive for them to put the show out on Blu-ray in 16:9, which you obviously ignorantly insist was possible?
Let me educate you, since it's obviously necessary.
The original CG special effects sequences were created for 4:3 television broadcasting. When the DVD's were released, they did a hack job and stretched those scenes to 16:9, which is why the show has always looked like crap ever since. They would need to create all the special effects for the entire series in 16:9 because the original assets were lost when Netter Digital and Babylonian Productions were dissolved. The only option open to them, therefore, was to turn to the original 4:3 film negatives that Babylonian Productions was contractually obligated to hand over to WB every time a new episode was produced. And since it was the film negatives that were resorted to, they were able to produce a true HD release of the series. The only drawback was that they had to finesse all of the CG effects scenes because they were produced in standard definition. In other words, WB took the only path really open to them to produce an HD version of all the series' episodes. But of course, being a hot-head, shooting your mouth off in total ignorance, having no idea what you're talking about is so much easier obviously.
So keep doing it, dummy.
To me it looks a lot better than the dvds besides The Gathering. Hopefully the movies get released on blu-ray eventually. I am glad that we got the series and the new movie at this point.
