- Watchmaking Vlog Episode 42 - In this watchmaking episode I start to make some clamps for the faceplate of my Cowells CW90 Watchmakers Lathe.
I finally get my Optimum 3008g Lathe running. It is such a pleasure to work with.
Its only a short video, look forward to seeing you on the next one.
I am so excited for the future, I feel like I am one step closer to realising my dreams of making watches.

Some cutting oil is customary when using a parting tool. There is a lot of friction on the sides of the cut due to the tools geometry. Just a little applied with a brush as the cut progresses. Looking forward to chips flying on the big lathe !
Thanks so much, it makes sense. Appreciate the advice 😁
Those shear tools are great, very versatile, effective, and simple to keep sharp!
Thanks man, yeah super simple and versatile
Have a look at a t shaped HSS parting tool, pretty sure eccentric engineering (Were you got your Tangential tools from) has them. I would argue that insert parting tools not fit for purpose for this kind of steel on this kind of lathe. You can grind it to shape and hone it sharp.
Good choice on the HSS cutter tool. I have the same one and love it!!
Thanks Paul, yeah it's pretty versatile.
great to see the lathe in action!
Thanks so much Alan! Without your help I would never been able to get that lathe in the shop 🙏🏼😁
Good to see some progress Dean, hope you get better soon. No man-flu 😉
Thanks Maikel 🙏🏼🙏🏼😁
Dean where did you go. I’ve missed your videos.
What make is the big lathe Dean? Was it expensive?
I am assuming it is an optimum lathe (branded chuck)? What model? Did you get it from Hare and Forbes?
Hey Mark, as Hugh mentioned it’s an Optimum lathe. Optiturn 3008g, it was cheaper than my Cowells, it’s reasonably priced for the lathe in my opinion. It was from Hare and Forbes Hugh, ex demo.
