    Pretty nuts when you here Scott Kelly even say "I wouldnt want to go on the one way trip." A guy who has spent more time in space than anyone else. He knows anyone is going to want to come back. They would for sure go crazy.

      Not true, he is 5th, and tied with the Russian he did the year long mission with. there are four other Russians that had longer missions then a year. To put it differently to avoid confusion, those four men all spent longer consecutive days in space than Scott Kelly.

    1. A mission to Mars does not require 2-3 years in microgravity. Any manned mission to Mars will use a low-energy transfer orbit, which takes 6 months and provides a free return trajectory. This is roughly the average length for a manned mission aboard the ISS.
    2. Anybody who would get 'bored' on a mission to Mars should not be an astronaut.

    • @user-by1kw1ix4p

    Newer generations are more used to limited human contact and communicating via instant messages.
    Space Agencies that will be involved with the mission to Mars (I imagine it won't be just NASA this time) should work with Facebook, Twitter, Google and others, so they could get something that resembles the Internet and social networking.

    Seeing the Earth from a Martian perspective (as a tiny speck of light) would most likely feel like you've died, or create a state of indescribable panic, knowing that you just ruined your only real life, to spend on a dead planet with 1% air pressure, freezing and is completely radioactive. You would hate yourself for making such a trip.

    Alessandra, well done!. Team Verge again keep up the supreme video quality, this is why no doubt why you are the best right now for space news.
    Psychological is one key aspect, new first time experiences in reality will test the phrase i read it somwhere "shape your will, body will follow." Honestly, the view of earth on the horizon of Mars is one hell/heaven(U decide) of experience.
    Lastly, i think one way to solve 3 year loneliness issue is gather astronauts who love what they do and wont give up. (This doesnt mean current ones do not, they are and everybody who goes up love what they do but) By that mean, while doing the routine works they need to have hobby/love/passion of something that they can keep doing anywhere, anytime of life.

    Only if we had a way to make the trip a few months long will we really ever make serious progress on Mars I think. If you could tell astronauts. It's going to be three months there, you'll spend 6-9 months working, and then come back three months later, we'd have a lot more people wanting to go.
    We're a LONG ways away from travel that fast though.

    Cool video but i feel a lot of things were said wrong, yes it could be a 2-3 year mission but most of that time would be spent on the surface of mars. So there would be gravity, even if its 1/3. having a surface to walk around and explore would definitely help with the astronauts depression. Also mars has a very similar day night cycle so sleeping should improve. most the problems they talked about would be for the time traveling to and from mars, which should be 8 or 9 months each way at most (the way there could be as little as 3 to 4 months) and these two long intervals of space flight would be broken in to two parts by an awesome stay on another planet.

    The negative effects of microgravity can be avoided during a mission to Mars by creating artificial gravity. If they tether to the last spent stage of the rocket by a long cable and spin the habitat around, as shown in Mars Underground, they could create gravity similar to Earth or Mars.

    • @bigpoppa3020
      @bigpoppa3020 7 років тому

      We could argue all day what's worse for humans, all you've proven is that space isn't for you, which is fine. Scott Kelly spent a year in space but you don't see him having mental break downs and NASA has never had that problem in the ISS despite protocol for that scenario. People are fully aware of what their getting into when they go into space. Also NASA's immediate plans for mars don't outline staying for life. And yes trained astronauts can predict this, this isn't the middle ages, modern psychology knows the effects of stress and other factors upon the brain.

    • @bigpoppa3020
      @bigpoppa3020 7 років тому

      ***** Obviously he trained and that's exactly my point. However you cannot testify on his behalf. You are thinking of mars one or SpaceX which won't likely be the first to Mars. NASA has no plan on the first trip to Mars to have them stay for life, at most for 18 months when they can leave do the planet's orbit position.

    • @bigpoppa3020
      @bigpoppa3020 7 років тому

      +Tuan X One might not return from minimum security prison, your safety isn't guaranteed there either maybe you don't understand that. Also maybe you don't know that air that is produced in says is more pure. Astronauts have daily interaction in space your point is irrelevant. Your whole point is subjective, it's not an absolute at all. Completely different environments. Do you think anyone who can survive in minimum security can survive in space? If it's not true both ways, not true at all. You don't care about NASAs missions shows your careless in making an argument.

    What? Where did they get 2-3 years of travel time? It supposed to be 3-3,5 years TOTAL with travel time back and forth and 2 years on the surface. It's especialy bad for Orion if they are talking about NASA plans, that thing is tiny. And there is no amount of exercises that can counter 2-3 years of 0g and have people be "battle" ready when they step outside the lander. Not a scientist here, but it doesn't feel right. The less travel time the better.

    Kelly took THOUSANDS of photos of the Earth from the ISS but he didn't take a single photo of the Milky Way Galaxy. Think about that for a moment.... After a full year, he didn't put his camera to the window of the ISS and snap a single photo of the most amazing and incredible object in space...WHY?

    • @stephandrake
      @stephandrake 6 років тому

      One of many, many questions. Another perfectly valid question is, why does NASA use virtual reality software to shoot its ISS videos? And why the constant loud background noise of ... jet engines? Air filtering systems can be whisper quiet, so that doesn't explain it. Again, what we actually hear in the background of those ISS "tour" videos are the engines of a zero-gravity airplane.
      Kelly knows all this perfectly well, which makes him nothing more or less than a professional liar by trade.

    Yup it will have impact. But 7monrhs later... If you hit Mars properly, you would come to Bahamas baby :D and depression would go away so fast... Because we know about Mars a lot :D

    it takes 2 to 3 years based on current nasa technology. imagine if spaceX created a faster rocket.

      Its not really the speed that's the problem its the alignment of the planetary orbits. Going from one orbiting body to another as they both orbit the sun is complex and involves varying travel times depending on the phase of orbit everything is in.

    Ask astronauts is like asking the taxi drivers and bus drivers what cars shall be developed. If you asked the user of horses 120 years ago, what they need, they would answer: faster horses. Cars was not in their mind. Thanks god, Ford developed the affordable car without asking carriage drivers. Persons that will go to mars will have so much to day until they arrive so that it will be too fast even if it lasts 9 months. Additionally with BFR you have a lot of people with you and a lot of space inside the ship to move around. BFR will travel in 6 month or less to mars. The training for the first mars explorers should begin now. Otherwise they will not be ready when BFR is ready ... even it comes 4 years later (i.e. 2028 instead of 2024).

    It does not take 2-3 years to reach Mars. It takes 6 months. No idea where "2-3 years in micro gravity" comes from.

    I'm just wondering. How is sending a group of people on one way trip to mars with their consent ok but euthanasia with patients consent isn't?

      It is, because they will continue to live. Just on a different planet. Not that they ever will do a one way mission. By the time Mars One flies, there will already be a ride home waiting somewhere on the planet.

    0:34 Yeah maybe a mission to Mars will last 2 to 3 years. But in that time the astronauts won't be in micro gravity the hole time! In takes around 6 Months or so to get to Mars. Then you have gravity back! Not as much as on Earth but a good amount! Then 6 Months return to Earth. So astronauts won't be in micro gravity for 2 or 3 years!

    You won't spend 2 years in "microgravity" because about a year or more of that time will be spent in 38% gravity on Mars. "Micro-gravity" is zero-G.

    If we are going to spend a gazillion dollars on a science/engineering project, we should spend it on fusion energy research. Abundant, clean energy is something we can actually use. A man on Mars would be cool, but not worth it.
