  • People with chronic insomnia have a remarkable ability to get through the day after a night of little to no sleep.
    Although facing the day after a hard night can seem daunting - and it can sometimes feel harder to get through the day - if you recall all the times you managed to get through the day after a bad night, you might be quite surprised at how often you've achieved this feat!
    Many people with chronic insomnia feel "tired but wired" - the effects of ongoing sleep disruption can lead to higher levels of fatigue, but the body does a great job at compensating for this and helping you get through the day.

    Recognizing your incredible ability to get through the day, even after a bad night, is so important - because the thought that you'll never be able to get through the day when you're struggling with sleep is a big driver of anxiety.
    By making a conscious effort to remind yourself of all the times you've got through the day after very little sleep - and all the times you had a good day (or even just an "OK" day) after a tough night - you can strip this anxiety of its power, and this increases the likelihood of sleep.

      I have a chronic insomnia due to IBS. Nothing helps except sleep medication but Im not aloud to take to much of it. I cant work 100%.. So I often never want to plan anything on the day time cause its unpredictable sleep, but most days I cant sleep at all.

      @@zoobabyhindiguy2973 We don't always remember dreaming - I don't think I've remembered any of my dreams for the past month! Many of us forget our dreams shortly after waking, so I wouldn't use that as a way to evaluate how you've been sleeping!

    People really don't understand how much insomnia messes you up. I don't care what people think, if you have chronic insomnia and are still able to live and even keep up with other people...you're the toughest warrior around. People talking about i'm tough this i'm tough that but you've never been really tough until you've suffered from a condition such as this

      People think it's not a big deal to have been an insomniac for years but the moment they miss sleep for ONE day they start whining and cribbing. It's hard to stay sane when you have this problem and takes all the resilience in this world.

    Well after 3 or 4 days with no sleep it is an incredible ability to stay alive with extreme depression and anxiety. I'm amazed I can live so long in this condition.

      mountaintruth1 deeds the Guinness world record before the challenge was discontinued from the records for being too dangerous was 11 days without sleep. However some people have gone weeks through rocking chair challenges.

      @@backwood2203 Over thinking I guess, I don’t know his situation and a lot of people don’t understand what sleep is for, physically. But to be fair after not sleeping for days you can get really worried for your health. Just think its comforting to know that no matter what, as far as I know, sleepiness will always catch up to you and there isn’t evidence its dangerous long term to be awake for long periods. It’s just painfull and frustrating until you fall asleep and stress can cause physical problems long term.

      @@chodie1fan21 when I can't sleep I just rest I had this Insonima shit for 4 months now I still feel the same I can still go to work and all I guess it depends on the person everybody different the only thing happen to me was my blood pressure was high af but now it's back to normal I gotta work on my sleep now sometimes I fall asleep and forget and wake up in the middle of the night I noticed when I don't rest and just stay up my body will automatically fall asleep

    I’ve suffered insomnia for so many years now! Nothing helps is awful I don’t wish this on my worst enemy. Thank you for giving it a positive outlook

      You can improve your sleep, no matter how long you have lived with insomnia! It's all about getting to the root of the issue - tackling the thoughts and behaviors that perpetuate sleep disruption.

      @@abbyromero8837 I am 57 and have PTSD and anxiety and depression I feel your pain I have been up for over 73 hours a few times in the last two years and it is HELL and it upsets me when people say "don't worry you will fall asleep when you are tired enough" I get so exhausted yet my mind is CONSTANTLY bouncing from one thought to the next and I have tried EVERYTHING (have had insomnia since I was a teenager) at least I know there are others like me because I never feel understood about how upsetting it is not to be able to sleep and still work and care for family members and a household. I feel bad because I know this video was meant to be encouraging but made me somewhat angry. Yes I can get through the first day with no sleep but the second and then the third is mentally and physically exhausting 😞

    I'm suffering from depression and anxiety. At night I get panic attacks. I loose control over my body and it stiffens. With all these and no sleep is pure torture.

    So true. My family and friends marvel at how I get through the day. I hadly fall asleep and can lie in bed all night without a wink. I even think I've lost my ability to sleep and have headaches often. I want to enjoy deep sleep🙈 but can't remember the last time I had one. Am 36 and my insomnia started in my teenage years and has grown worse . I need help.

      It can be so reassuring to recognize just how capable we can be, independently of sleep! If you spend a lot of time in bed awake, this suggests that there is an opportunity for you to make some changes to help set the stage for sleep.       I know insomnia just make me so dam tired i try to still manage to fight my daily challenge at work, but mines was around age 22 now am 42 its just gotten worst. I try to keep the faith every day

      @@yasminsimon7401 Fatigue is one of the biggest complaints associated with insomnia but the good news is that there are some things we can do to reduce fatigue - one of the best is probably the pursuit of enjoyable activities. Movement and activity tend to reduce fatigue while being sedentary actually promotes fatigue!

    And here we are… Another toxic positivity coach. Do you even understand what chronic and severe insomnia looks/feels like? Especially if you suffer from it since birth? When you can’t sleep a single hour for days even after years of therapy and sleep hygiene etc etc? There is nothing incredible about this. You are belittling a very serious problem. When you see an insomniac, you are most likely seeing a mask where it doesn’t look as bad as the anxiety, suicidal thoughts, physical / mental health problems, psychosis-like symptoms etc. behind the mask. Your attitude is the very reason why most people think that insomnia isn’t a problem while it affects your health directly. It’s a shame that people with this attitude are allowed to call themselves “coaches”, providing nothing more than nonsense. You can fake your wellbeing with toxic positivity for awhile, like I did for years until you literally collapse because your body never gets the chance to recharge itself. What an incredible state indeed!

I think you have me (and my intentions) a bit wrong - and when you describe all the difficulty you've experienced, I do find it incredible that you are still here, getting through each day. Even in the presence of all that difficulty. If that's not a unique ability, I don't know what is. I am the last person who would belittle someone with insomnia and I would strongly disagree that the information I share is nonsense. It sounds as though this particular video did not resonate with you and I apologize for any offense it may have caused.     I found the following things useful in beating crushing bouts of insomnia:
    1. Try to limit your stress - for me Insomnia is directly related to my stress levels - I understand this might not be true for everyone. I try not too do office work late anymore .. it makes to me too wired late. I just say hey I'll get up early and do it, if needed, rather than staying up late and working.
    2. Give it less power - Just say .. damn it .. if I don't sleep it doesn't matter. Even if you don't sleep its gonna feel a lot better for you the next day if you didn't stay up stressing about it all night.
    3. Try not to overthink improving your sleep habits and any rituals you think will help you sleep .. the last thing you need to do is stress that your bedroom isn't the correct temperature .. your pillow isn't the most comfortable one on the market ... or you didn't get to sleep at 8:30 on the dot. I found the less I think about sleep, the better it is. Sleep is a natural process don't try and force it.
    4. Exercise and general happiness - Try to keep a well balanced life, keep healthy and fit, and enjoy life with ones closest to you. I found overall happiness helps my sleep immensely.
    5. Don't rely on pills or alcohol. Contrary to popular belief by those without insomnia - alcohol is terrible for your sleep.

I really appreciate how you emphasized the benefits of abandoning attempts to control sleep or placing too much importance on sleep! Pursuing activities that add enrichment and happiness to our lives, independently of sleep, and not relying on external sleep "aids" can also be really helpful!

    it’s 7 am 3rd day without proper sleep (no sleep at all last night) and i already have anxiety and depression and i’m laying in bed tossing at round endlessly i have a 6 hour shift in a hour and. a half and i feel like fucking crying and blasting a shell in my skull i don’t wish this fuckinh suffering on anyone this is hell

      Those stretches of difficult nights are hard - no doubt about it. I have a feeling, however, that if you still went into work, you were still able to get through your six-hour shift - am I right? You CAN sleep and suicide is never the answer - if you ever feel suicidal, it's essential that you seek immediate help.

    I totally disagree with this video. I suffer severe chronic insomnia and I struggle so much next day with severe sleep deprivation that makes me sick. I don’t get through days so well.

    Praise God I've had chronic insomnia for about a year now and for no sleep for that long I'm doing relatively well. Mylack of sleep is due to health issues but I used melatonin and everything under the sun for like two weeks but the melatonin really worked wonders for me. About to get back on it because whew I feel like I might snap today!

    I'm extremely depressed, fatigued and feel out of it like all the time. I've been on Xanax for a bit, and it DID work but then stopped. Weaning off it now and read about HOPS so I'm trying those now. No sleep medicines help and there's so many side affects. Why do they even have these prescriptions??? They help for a very short time and I can assure you chronic insomnia is not a short term problem. Sleepy and miserable. I have massive anxety before "bed time".

      Thanks for sharing, Sally. You are right - chronic insomnia isn't a short-term problem! So, an approach that can be helpful over the long-term can sometimes be more useful - and that approach might involve practicing new habits and behaviors that help create good conditions for sleep and exploring a new approach to the difficult thoughts and feelings that come with insomnia. This can be a lot more difficult than taking medication but can be more helpful over the longer term.

    I've had insomnia all my life. Never been able to sleep in public places. Anything except pin drop silence, i cant sleep. Even with the best sleep hygiene methods and night time routines and exercise and diet and whatnot : I still end up waking up multiple times during the night with a single theme running in my head subconsciously. The suprising part is that however bad my sleep by, my body is able to function the same the next day. 26 years of this and i think I've evolved lol.

    What keeps me awake is the thought that my insomnia is causing permanent brain damage. There are multiple studies that say this happens. Do you have any idea how long a person must have chronic insomnia for in order to suffer irreversible damage to the brain?

      I have not seen any studies that have found insomnia causes permanent brain damage. No studies, in fact, have found that chronic insomnia causes any health problem whatsoever!
      Probably the best research we have when it comes to the negative outcome of insomnia is a meta-analysis published in 2019 that included 36,938,981 individuals and found no difference in the odds of mortality for those individuals with symptoms of insomnia when compared to those without symptoms! This is perhaps not surprising because the body will always give us, at the very least, the minimum amount of sleep we need to get by.
      In studies, the only consistent observations we see connected to sleep loss are daytime drowsiness (especially when sedentary), reduced performance on routine and boring tasks, and more irritability - and even these effects subside after a couple of weeks as the body becomes accustomed to less sleep.

      ​@@simonram8505 "Fatal familial insomnia" uses confusing terminology. It's an extremely rare genetic degenerative brain disorder (the genetic mutation that causes FFI is thought to exist in just 50 families in the entire world). It is not chronic insomnia or related to chronic insomnia in any way other than the confusing use of the word "insomnia" in the name. I hope this helps!

    I don't worry about getting through tomorrow. I worry about tomorrow in general. So I end up staying up until 2-3am until I try to wind down and then I am caught in my thoughts until I finally pass out and toss and turn all night being awake every 30 minutes. Then up early in the morning as soon as the sun hits. However, my 4pm naps are powerful. I wouldn't survive without them.

    I have been suffering from chronic insomnia for two months now. My insomnia is related with anxiety and fear of the future. Since the last two months , I have slept on good nights for 5 hours and on bad nights no hours at all. On an average , I have been sleeping for around 2-3 hours every night since the last two months.

      I am yet to find someone with chronic insomnia who doesn't have some degree of anxiety in their lives! The fact you are experiencing good nights of sleep proves that you are still capable of good nights of sleep and that after nights of less sleep, sleep drive builds and makes more sleep more likely.
      Many people who experience swings between more sleep and less sleep find it helpful to implement a sleep window to help ensure they don't allot too much time for sleep - this reduces nighttime wakefulness, builds sleep drive, and can help lower arousal. I hope this helps!

    I've had chronic insomnia twice in my life (I'm 43)
    I thought first time was bad but second time was way worse.
    I had it roughly 4 months and thought it would never end, I realised stress was the main factor in it all but getting no sleep just made me more stressed.
    At my worst i got no sleep 5 days out of seven with a full time job and family to look after.
    I realised at that point it couldn't get any worse and started to try calm myself down.
    I know it sounds stupid but when i got 2 hours it was better than none, Then 4 hours was better than 2 and so on,
    I just kept thinking it was better than the night before and got myself into a positive mindset and then started sleeping(Thankfully)

    I'm currently on 21 hours no sleep, just discovered this channel. I've survived multiple times previously over the last couple of years on 36+ hours no sleep. But yes this video just boosted my moralle and perspective on this unique ability.

      I’m in the same boat. Other night was up for 22 hours no sleep and many days I’m up for 36. I’ve actually risked working when up for 36 hours but then I read up on how your cognitive abilities and that are affected and it’s dangerous so won’t do it anymore. I have bipolar disorder which makes me manic and I have a poor quality life unfortunately because of sleep. Sometimes I get a real sick feeling when I need to go to sleep but can’t.

    i wish it was something that could be like actually treated or medicated. it’s so unbelievably frustrating beyond words sometimes. we are wayyy past taking melatonin. way past sleep hypnosis guided meditations etc. it just feels impossible eventually.

      There's no convincing evidence that melatonin, hypnosis, or guided meditations can cure chronic insomnia, so no surprise you haven't found them helpful!
      Of course, if we try all different things that don't get to the root cause of insomnia, it can all feel so impossible and helpless and we can get tangled up in an endless struggle and feel there's no way out.

    I have chronic insomnia for like 6 years. In am exhausted. I sleep once a week for 4hours of good sleep. It is the hardest thing in life. I trow up like the whole day and my legs are shaking because of how tired i am. I cry for 3 hours before i go to work. Everyday i have to go trough the day sick. At the beginning of my insomnia i could get through the day. But the last years my body cant handle it anymore because of how Sick i am Every day. This is so so so hard.

    I suffer from extreme insomnia for about 7 months now. The worst nights gave me the worst days. You become senile from lack of sleep, but you never forget the days. Constant suffering if you can say that about yourself.

      @@InsomniaCoach The less effort you have to put in the day, the easier it is to get away with. It's in a way like water deprivation. You can make it work, but you can't run a marathon. You are 100% certain handicapped by it.

      ​@@199724 I think few people would manage a marathon even after drinking a few gallons of water unless they trained for it in advance! So, perhaps a runner's failure to complete a marathon if they were deprived of water could be down to something other than just a lack of water (such as a lack of training or preparation, for example)?
      I actually worked with a client who was able to complete a weekend-long CrossFit competition (and even finish in second place) after weeks of poor sleep. If sleep led to significant physical daytime handicaps, I doubt she would have finished, let alone place second!
      With a bit of examination, our thoughts can often reveal themselves to be less black and white - less certain - then they usually first seem to be!
      I hope you find relief from your sleep issues, Robbert - I truly wish you all the best and have complete confidence that you can move past this period of sleep difficulty.

    i’m 15, and it seems atleast every other night i don’t get a blink of sleep. I’ve tried everything, putting my phone away early, not eating sweets before bed. And i take melatonin every night. But it dosnt work and it feels like i’m going crazy 😭

    I have insomnia + anxiety disorder + bipolar 2. Takes me a solid 2 or more hours to fall asleep and I wake up at least 2 times a night. Takes me at least 2 hours to properly wake up and function during the day. My psychiatrist recommended me to a sleep specialist because it’s a hard case for him to deal with. At this point it’s nearly debilitating.
    People without another underlying illness may be fine, but us with more may feel differently. My two cents.

      Insomnia that exists alongside other health issues can definitely make things a bit more complicated - that doesn't mean there's no hope, though!
      Often, if it takes a long time to fall asleep we might not be sleepy enough for sleep when we go to bed (we might feel tired/fatigued but not sleepy) and/or we might be putting pressure on ourselves to sleep.
      Waking in the morning and finding it takes a couple of hours to properly function isn't too unusual and is often a symptom of sleep inertia and might not always be a reflection of how well you slept!

      Some of us can certainly be more predisposed to sleep disruption - but it's our thoughts and behaviors that perpetuate sleep disruption and provide chronic insomnia with the fuel it needs to survive. With this in mind, nobody needs to live with chronic insomnia indefinitely - if we can successfully tackle the thoughts and behaviors that perpetuate sleep disruption, we make it impossible for insomnia to stick around forever!

      If arousal is an obstacle to sleep, relaxation can be helpful at lowering that obstacle. Just bear in mind that no relaxation technique can generate sleep since the only thing that generates sleep is our own biological sleep drive.

Since you associate chronic insomnia with being completely dysfunctional during the day, it might be worth exploring this a little more since it's likely to be a big source of sleep-related arousal. What tests did you fail, and why was chronic insomnia to blame? What was the reason given by your place of employment when you lost your job? Was the reason for you losing your job listed as chronic insomnia, or something else?

    I have had severe sleeping problems since 2003 when I was 16 years old. I believe mine is caused by my ptsd. I remember when it started I was scared and to get some sleep I actually stole my father's sleeping pills and used them all in a month. My father had/ has occasional insomnia so one time when he was going to take one he noticed that they were all gone. I used to take quetiapine to get some sleep but it caused all sort of side effects so I had to stop using it. I sometimes do sleep pretty well but now is that time again when falling asleep seems imbossible. At my worst I can be awake the whole night 🤷‍♀️

    I dont care that I can even outcompete others without a single minute of sleep, I just want to be able to rest finally.     Hello, I face a rather rare chronic insomnia, at the age of 17 after a psychotic episode I lost sleep, then there were excessive worries about not being able to fall asleep. between 7> 8 hours but today the insomnia has returned and more violently I sleep fragmented for 2 hours and I wake up in the middle of the night, difficulty falling asleep until morning, all this after a certain cold that I could say was Covid since then sleep is poor duration, intensity and fragmented.

    Is there a way to distinguish between insomnia caused by psychological stress or depression and insomnia caused by a problem with the body or the brain? Is "onset insomnia" more likely psychological and "maintenance insomnia" more likely to do with thyroid issues or a brain abnormality?

      If someone has been diagnosed with chronic insomnia, it's virtually guaranteed that sleep disruption is being perpetuated by inaccurate/unhelpful sleep-related thoughts and behaviors. Since CBT-I techniques help address these thoughts and behaviors, they are usually very effective for anyone with chronic insomnia - regardless of whether that insomnia is characterized by difficulty falling asleep at the start of the night, or difficulty falling back to sleep after waking during the night.

    I worked 3 years in row night shift on top of that 4 years no longer working night shift total of 7 years that im sleeping only upon sunrise and i usually get less than 5-6 hrs day sleep. There are days with no sleep at all !! Ive seen a lot of changes all this period, I've become a useless individual, tried of everything, low mood, fatigue, getting angry easily for nonsense...i hate this kind of life. I dunno what to do !!! Tried everything but seems to me that sleeping its not mandatory, feel like: I have to sleep bcs thats why they say that normal humans do...

      40 hours is a long stretch of no sleep! Since sleep drive builds with every minute of wakefulness, sleep drive is going to be intense after 40 hours, so I suspect that sleep likely followed not long after you posted this comment. I hope you are doing better since you posted.

    I can get through the day after a terrible night’s sleep (or no sleep), but I generally just limp through. A bad night generally means a sluggish, unproductive day.

      You have two ways of responding to those terrible nights, right? You can continue to do things that matter (even if they are more difficult/less fulfilling) or withdraw from life and do less of what matters. I suspect that only one of those choices is workable and yet that doesn't take anything away from the fact those days are still hard. So, I encourage you to be kind to yourself when things feel difficult, too.

    What if I haven’t been able to sleep in three days? I’ve realized now that I may have always had sleeping problems, anxiety about the next day, they keep me up and some nights I get 3-hours of sleep. On average I go to sleep around 10:00 pm and wake up at 5 am. I recently went through something that has ramped up my anxiety and stress plus how I negatively look at myself and I’ve struggled to sleep maybe 10 hours in the past two weeks and am trying to get over consecutively being awake for three days straight due stress

      @@InsomniaCoach it really is.....if I get home late at night and still have to go to work early next morning, it's hard getting up initially.....but once I get moving is when I feel that very distinct extra push.

    2 years ago I had to get up early for work so I forced myself to go to sleep early of course this resulted in me not sleeping at all .to follow would be a very rough few months of heavy sleep anxiety and insomnia, which I managed to get out of through a lot of help and support and meds .Fast forward to Jan 2023 and out of the blue it's back . My question is why does insomnia relapse and typically how long does it take,using cbti,to get back on track?I also take an ssri which I'm told I'd be on for life which is strange to me because one of its side effects is insomnia, your insight on this would really help me as I am in an area where there aren't any professionals in the field of sleep,thanks.

    I suffered Insomnia for like 2 months, so tired, that I felt stressed out, How can u say that it's a remarkable ability instead of a disease?

      Insomnia can be really difficult - and it can lead to more fatigue and more stress. However, even in the two months you had insomnia, you still got through each day. And I think that's an incredible ability when we consider all the adversity you faced!

    I have not slept in 7 days and my Brain is still very wired and I feel like I'm going crazy I'm going bald from ripping my hair out I don't wanna do it I just find my self doing it when I'm trying to sleep

    No. I cannot sleep, but i do NOT have the ability to get through the day. I have seizures from migraines instead.
    And i dont have "a bad night of sleep". Sleep would make it a good night. Der!

    What an incredible ability? Unfortunately, it’s not one that I wish I had. I’d much rather have the ability to sleep easily without any struggle. I would trade for that in a heartbeat, that should go without saying.

      That's a good question. Science hasn't found insomnia causes any health problem so perhaps the cost comes from how we might respond to insomnia when it shows up?

    Get a sleep study done- one that scores RERAs/uses 1a scoring. For real, could save your life.

    A number of people with chronic insomnia might have narcolepsy. (Disorder of sleep-wake cycle) Look up the symptoms (such as sleep paralysis and hallucinations) as you might find this is you. There is treatment for this.

      It's always important to get a medical diagnosis from a medical doctor. Narcolepsy is very different from chronic insomnia, so I'd be surprised for someone to be misdiagnosed in such a way. Thanks for your engagement!

    Hello, recently i have been having lot of issues with sleep i fall asleep but wake up 2 3 hours and cant get back to sleep. This has never happened before. There are few things going in life but its not overwhelming. Im confused

    What’s so crazy for me is that I have depression and a little bit of anxiety but I don’t know why all of the sudden for a full week I haven’t been getting any sleep. I also always have been struggling with my sleep and having a few bad night here and there but I always have been able to bounce back and sleep. Can you tell me what’s wrong?

      It's impossible to say, Olivia! Sometimes there's an obvious cause of temporary sleep disruption, and sometimes there isn't. The body, however, will always give us - at the very least - the minimum amount of sleep we need. This might not happen right away (for example, the night right after a hard night) and it might not be evident in terms of longer sleep duration (sometimes the body will change our sleep stages a bit) but we will always sleep and get just enough sleep.
      What we can do is try not to get in the way of what our body wants to do (sleep!) by doing things that can perpetuate sleep disruption - this often involves unhelpful behaviors such as spending more time in bed, modifying our days in response to how we sleep, etc.

    Sorry, but I’m calling BS on this one. The chronic insomnia I experience does NOT allow me to get through the day. I could literally fall asleep standing up at times. I simply cannot function when insomnia has been chronic. A few days, maybe, but not weeks or months….how about years? Not happening.

      I've had clients who have successfully worked through intense job interviews and passed complex and challenging exams, even when living with chronic insomnia and even after really difficult nights of sleep!
      There can be no doubt or argument that things can be more difficult after difficult nights of sleep, but we can still be remarkably capable, even in cognitively demanding situations - and I don't know of any evidence that has found this causes any health problem or "cost".

      @@InsomniaCoach Thank you appreciate the response. Apologies for the unfounded claim. You compelled me to do more research to back up what I said. I’m happily surprised to know pushing myself with insomnia won’t have any more negative consequences than just being cognitively dormant (cognitively I mean, studying, pushing through lectures etc). In fact I found the default mode network requires more energy than focusing one thing alone.

      Secondly, perhaps the biggest study to look at the relationship between chronic insomnia and risk of mortality involved over 35 million individuals and found no link whatsoever: www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1087079218300741
      Finally, to answer your question, if you are implementing sleep restriction it's usually recommended to avoid going to bed/falling asleep before the sleep window begins. Of course, if you feel you might fall asleep without warning and it would be dangerous for that to happen, a safety nap is always appropriate.
