- In this video I refinish a mid century table that had been painted. I found the table in a thrift store for $5.

Tom would be flattered that you took so much time and care with rescuing his table. So worth the effort you put into it!
Exactly my thoughts :)
What if tom was the one who painted it
LOL, Tom’s mom definitely painted it.
@@billymasoner3735 😂
@Alan Jackson i think it’s a telephone table!! the phone would go on the top shelf and a cushion would go on larger, lower part so you could sit there and use the phone
I knew people back in the 1960's who had tables like that. They used them for telephone tables, the phone would be on the top shelf and the phone book would be tucked underneath.
Yep, I was just gonna say this when I saw your comment. Them darn kids today don't know the joy of telephone-specific furniture. Also, there was probably a cushion on the lower surface where the housewife would sit during her phone conversations.
@@frankkrunk Telephone specific furniture today is typically nightstands with built in chargers, often wireless chargers. If you look at night stands today, a lot of them are pretty damn small. Main reason being that people use their phones as alarm clocks in the morning and also use it just before going to sleep, making the nightstands primary usage become a phone table
Yes, I have one that I inherited from my grandmother, mine has a really detailed wood and a woven cane sitting area.
@@frankkrunk Glad I don't live like a caveman.
I just said the same. 😅
Knowing that paint scraper exists has changed my outlook on all thrift store furniture...
Ah- The relaxing joys of watching Dashner scrape paint! And then, the beauty is revealed.
This is a beautiful little table. These days on UA-cam, you always see a maker take a nice walnut piece and then paint it white. I'm so glad to see someone do the opposite. Nothing beats the beauty of wood grain. Thanks for this video.
I almost thought that was the new trend!
@oneEighty àaq
It’s so refreshing to just be given the information without screaming, jump cuts or bad jokes. Thanks for a video I can actually watch and absorb.
Oh yes! And without the presenter gambling on about 'how _excited_ they are! (I bet they're not!)
Imagine being Tom and seeing that table you made in high school is now a UA-cam star.
Imagine yourself as me imagining myself as Tom and seeing that table you made in high school is now a UA-cam star.
If you were doing mid century furniture as a school project you are likely dead now. Prolly got sold with his estate, then painted up as a fun project with the kids, by new owner.
Imagine Tom is dead.
I kind of assumed the table was bought second-hand or handed down, and just painted and given to Tom, it looked like an old table that had been repurposed for a child's room.
Finally someone who realises the value of wooden furniure. All those refurbishing furniture videos uploaded nowadays cover up beautiful wood grain with tacky paint. Glad to see someone restore it the proper way.
-is it just me or did the little table seem proud of its sweet new look?!?! 🤣 it's so cute!
It really is. ❤️
Albatross yes I agree, the end table looks happy😊
Like freshly restored Woody in Toy Story? :'S
@@Alexkpz888 🥲 you’re right, this little table looks so proud and happy.
Besides being informative and educational, there's something peaceful and soothing about these videos. I'm a big fan - keep 'em coming!
Thank you.
@@DashnerDesignRestoration Many times I watch in bed.
I get the same feeling.
Plus, birds...
He should do "voice" for meditation tapes...Definitely soothing...
Finally someone who appreciates original work furniture 👍
“Gently worn” also indicates that a piece has a past and I think one should appreciate that.
That is $5 well spent, I'm sure "TOM" would be proud. Of course, the hours of your care and labor are invaluable. Love the casual dig at Citristrip, too.
Tom’s wife will be less pleased he undid all the work she put into it but the result is fantastic...
@Mu*Shu TeeVee Can confirm, actually. You've got to prove you're buying it for a real company. That stuff is scary.
I've become a fan of scraping after watching these videos.👍🏾
Gorgeous mid-century table. The upper platform was originally designed so a telephone could be placed on it, while a phone book could be stored underneath it. Great video.
It is such a breath of fresh air to see something returned to it's natural beauty when so many take the finished article and wallop grey paint on it. Beautiful restoration.
What a pleasure to see wood restored rather than painted.
That is so beautiful. I am so tired of seeing gorgeous wood antiques being chalk painted in the name of farmhouse decor. Rescuing this table to it’s former glory was so satisfying to watch. What a beautiful piece you have now. 👍🏻❤️
I love how your work space is realistic. Most of us work in a space like that. It proves you can get great results without an expensive shop.
You can indeed. I work out of my kitchen and still manage to get some great results, albeit it requires quite a bit more cleaning to do so 😄
no we live in a simulation omg
@@Arterexius me too. I have an old shed to make a studio, but always the kitchen wins -- better light anyway & the kettle is right there :)
If I were that piece of timber I'd feel pretty respected. Great work.
Love the editing style of the video without any music.
Just a calming voice and an interesting video.
A piece that many would just walk by and say no thanks.....you turned it into a work of art....
that's so beautiful that i am almost emotional. it's not just about giving an object second life, but the fact that wood, as part of a living thing, and having its beauty revealed again after decades is proof that Nature itself is beautiful. Good job!
Well said!
Such an inspiring project. If we do more of this work, the world will be a lot more sustainable
Love the way you manage to give that touch of exclusivity to the simplest of furniture. To see the hidden gem underneath years of neglect and paint is a proof of great taste. Very nice video.
Your "gently worn" look is very similar to "showeroom fresh". Well done once again!
The philosophy of refinishing mid-century furniture. I like it.
You are the Bob Ross of restoration and you need a show on HGTV.
Thank you for taking the time to get rid of that awful paint and restore this beautiful piece back to it's glory. Beautiful job.
It looks like what we would have called a Telephone table back in the 60s. Nice work.
Tom's table looks a lot happier now its been restored back to its beautiful finish.
Heart warming to see somebody working to all the details. Keep it up.
THIS! This is a rescue! Not taking something already beautiful and modernizing it into something that is not.
I really like your choice of finish. Every piece of furniture has a story to tell and I like the fact you let it do so by blending imperfections but not hiding them. Great job and results!
Thank you!
so glad someone is combatting the evils of people who paint wood furniture
The painted version was nicer. It was probably made for kids and fits the time period: made to make people feel happy after WWII.
The refinished one has no character at all. An expensive looking finish does not go with a simple construction.
@@duudsuufd you realize this is a mid-century table.. meaning it was made in the early to mid 60s.. far after WW2.. as well as the fact it was most likely painted by someone AFTER production, because they wouldn't have used nice wood in the production if they were just going to paint over it
@@dunderheadgood For me mid-century is 1950. And the quality wood could have been reused from a bigger piece of furniture. The way the legs are mounted isn't high quality!
@@duudsuufd well this table is in the style of 60s furniture 😑 also i’m not really keen on arguing with u about a bloody table go away
@@duudsuufd I don't think anything used in the production was of particularly high quality. He even mentions that he thinks it's plywood covered with the Walnut veneer and that it could've been a shop project. That said, I personally still much prefer the wood look to the painted one. A nice wood grain is all the character I need in a table. Also, modern minimalism would disagree with your statement that expensive finishes do not belong on simple designs. It all comes down to a given person's taste at the end of the day.
I hope Tom got an “A” on that project. I’m gonna give you an “A” for the restoration!
The rescue is nice. But honestly the original look is so so cute, with happy colors and butterflies
I’m a car guy, so I can’t help but think “That coffee table has a spoiler.”
was it in a wind tunnel?
At the end of a struggle filled day, your videos bring a sense of calm. And the quality of your work is just amazing.
Thank you so much! It's nice to see someone appreciate the original piece but also restore it so beautifully
🐼 Big Bear Hugs from a 67 yr old grandma in Kirby, Texas, USA 🐼......
First pandemic walk I went on early last year I found a MCM desk on the curb. Had been painted. I scraped and found the same paint in the grain issue so I set it aside not knowing how to fix it. Now I know. Thank you very much!
This is like the opposite of most “tik Tok restorations” where they find some amazing mid century piece and destroy it with some acrylic paint from the craft section of hobby lobby.
Come on now, Don't call teenagers' artwork 'destroying' something. It's good that they've got hobbies, especially in this day and age.
@@007Julie "Nobody should be allowed to alter objects that they own" isn't the hot take you think it is. Unclench, I'm begging you. It's not that serious.
@@007Julie Than act it. Come on, now.
@@007Julie Ah, So you're one of those types of people who honestly thinks that typos devalue someone's argument, huh? I'm not a linguist. You're gonna have to find another justification to be a jerk about kids' artwork.
@@007Julie Kids make bad art. Making bad art is how you eventually get to the point where you make good art. It sucks that sometimes the canvas they choose is art in and of itself that their actions somewhat devalue, but it's all in the process of becoming a better, more aesthetically conscientious artist. Maybe most people will never get to that point anyway, but some might, so we should all be a bit more understanding of the process. Nobody yells at a kid for wasting food when they make macaroni art. If someone takes their own furniture and makes it into something they like, that's their decision, not ours.
That paint coming off with the scraper was so satisfying haha
It's almost impossible to believe that this is the same table. Great job!
Your restorations of mid-century modern pieces are incredible. Didn’t even know I liked this style of furniture until I watched some of your restos. Thanks for tackling this painted piece. Gives me the courage to give it a try!
I'm really fond of the "gently worn" look, it's like it's lived where it is for a good while, and has the love of the home in it. My first home was like that, and it was really comforting.
Mid Century modern is my favorite furniture style and where I live, it's rare to find anything refinished or otherwise. You're lucky to find so many great pieces to fix up!
So nice to see someone taking the time to restore a piece to its original finish..... I’m tired of seeing people ruining wood pieces with chalk paint etc....
I'm not sure if you feel like you are repeating yourself when you make these videos, but I wanted to say that every time I watch a new video of yours I learn something. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with those of us who barely know what we are doing lol.
That paint scraping looks like mighty hard work.
It’s not too bad if the blade is sharp.
@@DashnerDesignRestoration was it that sharp out of the box, or did you have to hone it? I'd love to use a scraper instead of sanding or stripping whenever possible, but based on the UA-cam videos I've seen there's a lot of prep work to get and maintain a good sharp scraper.
Yes but better for the environment! 🌍
@@PattyPaints I have this same scraper, it is pretty sharp right out of the box. You can hone the blade but replacements are pretty cheap.
I use it mainly for scraping glue after it dries, IE after a glue up on a cutting board.
@@cswilliams29 Thanks for the info! Is it a Husky? I tried to pause the video to see the brand...
This is one of the single most satisfyingly things I have ever seen.
Watching that tacky unaesthetic paint job come off....is Beautiful
Great video! Calming, no annoying background music, easy to follow
A little bit of exhausting workday at the hospital. Coming home to my loved hubby and dogs, bowl of soup and 15 minutes of Dashner. And I am relaxed now.
My dad's voice in my head: "HE'S USING SUPERGLUE ON WOOD? THAT'LL NEVER WORK!" (It works.) "I'm SURE it'll fall apart at some point."
This is sooo relaxing, your voice, the birds chirping, the process…
Thanks for watching.
I love your definition of "gently worn". My families definition was "mildly put through a wall out of slight hostility"
I love these old telephone tables! My parents had one of those in the '70's .
I’ll bet Tom would love to have this back.
Nice job! A $5 table turned into this! If the folks at the thrift store only knew...
Is nice to see somebody strip the paint off and restored to its original appearance versus most who take a piece of furniture and just throw paint on it and say see! it's a new table. I like the new refinished appearance
Sir, you're Julian Baumgartner of furniture restoration! My deep respect for your skills!
The only difference is a more favorable attitude towards polyurethane
I thought the same thing!!! And he's doing it just for fun! Truly amazing!
I was getting Baumgartner vibes from this as well
SAY NO TO POLYURETHANE!
@@junkabella6324 Say no to staples! More tacks is more better!
Really appreciate the added narration on the thought processes behind your choices.
This piece reminds of where my mother used to placed her Rotary Telephone and the Yellow Pages Book underneath the second panel . Thanks for the memories .
Gorgous! I totally agree that MCM looks best with those gorgeous wood grains on display, and showroom fresh. I HATE when people paint MCM furniture instead of refinishing, though I know it's harder! You do this with such finesse. Really, no one else on UA-cam comes close to how gorgeously your pieces turn out.
To be fair if its not been painted over refinishing it isn't too bad. Can be done in an afternoon. Trying to remove the paint though is a bitch
@@Stettafire I want to try my hand at it, cause I LOVE MCM furniture. I'm learning a lot on this channel.
Such detailed work! It went from granma's art shed table to fancy vintage table.
It’s amazing how popular these step tables have become. Great job! Your “gently worn” looks showroom to most of us! Love your videos!
You have such a relaxing speaking voice. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your process.
My 9 year old joined me this time to watch. I love your videos, thanks!
I’ve been working with a piece with those stubborn paint specs in the grain and couldn’t find any tips for removing them! This was so helpful! I went at mine with a toothpick. I was so excited to see you doing a painted piece! Thanks for your videos! Your pieces are beautiful.
Thin some shellac and apply that to the areas with the paint specks, allow it to dry, then apply paint stripper on top. The shellac bonds
to the paint and the stripper will pull it out.
When I was a kid, I had a table like that. My mom put my lil tube tv on the shelf part. Then I would sit in front of it and use the table part for my drinks and stuff.
Pretty good table for kids to use, keeps them from sitting too close to the tv by having that table to create distance.
what a sweet image - a little guy with the whole outfit :)
Nicely done. The paint touch up at the end was enlightening. Pun intended.
Nice find! My wife keeps watching 'furniture flipping' videos where they buy nice hardwood pieces to slather on chalk paint for resale. Makes me cringe. Glad to see someone going the other direction.
In addition to your other, impressive technical skills, you have an amazing ability to see a swan where most of us would see an ugly ducking! This little table looks like an aristocrat now!
A calm turning point arrived in my day. Things are possible. People are sane. Thank you.
beautiful work with no shitty music in the background
just the sound of tools and brushes which give you eargasm
and the end product looks great
i give it a perfect score 5/7
Thank you! Without a long boring story of me being a dumba** for the first project I chose, you have given me some peace about multiple rounds of a citrusy stripper, tried a sander and heat gun but scraping, to quote Beck is “where it’s at”. Love the videos and the nature/weather sounds we get with them. You should consider a relaxation channel, with the birds or rain, stories of restoration.
Most peaceful restoration youtuber I’ve found. I love the work and the dedicated editing skills with the hard work. It’s intense talent on both ends. It’s just soothing and not loud at all. I really like that.
Wow!!!! I just knew you would uncover a hidden treasure! GREAT job! It is GORGEOUS! 😍
Thank you!
It’s so nice and refreshing to see someone removing paint from wood furniture.
Wow, what a beautiful piece of furniture hiding beneath all that!
Between you & Tom, a beautiful table was created.
I think that the most honorable thing about your job it’s not just the finishing and caring that you put in each and every work but the fact that you give new life to something that is already there. I find it essencial nowadays since there’s so much stuff in the world already and recycling is mandatory! congrats!
That is a beautiful! Who woulda thunk? Saved this video for later, lots to pick up on.
What a joy to watch your video....NO annoying music...what a relief...I can heard the birds in the background...i can hear u clearly when u do the explanation...and I love the idea of watching more videos done by u...Please do not add music to the videos...many of us want peaceful videos to watch...blessings to you and yours.
Those flutterbys never saw that blade coming , great video as always
I wonder what kind of grade Tom got when he submitted this table as his wood shop project. I give your refinish job an A+!
My grandfather has one just like that. He made it in shop class in the 40s.
So you took a unique piece and made it look like millions of other walnut end tables.
You are correct, sir.
Thank you for the great video. It is realy nice to hear again the "Restaurator with the golden voice"
Wow, Tom would be proud! I love to see things like this. Restoring something to its original beauty. This awful trend of chalk painting antique furniture is a travesty!
For every single one of these videos there's one that tells us to funk up classic furniture by painting it in jazzy colours
Some tapered brass foot covers would look fantastic on this.
Great job, I just hate it when people paint over veneered and wood furniture just ruination to me , Stay Safe now !!!.
Love it! You’re voice is very soothing!🙏🏽❤️
I can’t believe that’s the same table. Such a great job!
I'm sure the 5 bucks you put out went for a worthy cause. The improvement you made was nothing short of amazing, a beautiful job!
While there is no escaping the design, the natural finish and utility will be of benefit to whatever niche it fills. I see it with a wired phone on top, a telephone directory underneath, and a copy of Look in front.
I love what you do.
"...a copy of Look..." you brought me back so many memories... wow, thanks!
That’s an incredible revamp of a $5 piece of furniture!
Aside from your calm voice, clear instructions, and beautiful work, I love watching these because you don't chalk paint over beautiful pieces of wood :)
My first ever high school wood shop piece was a shelf with pegs for hanging hats and jackets. Still my pride and joy piece. It's moved between family members. My uncle had it and then he moved and gave it back to me, then my brother asked for it. Haha, it's sturdy to have survived since 2007 when I was a freshman.
went from junk-ready children's desk to refined mansion foyer phonetable. Really saved it, wish people would respect woodgrain aesthetics more.
