There are enough houses in both england and Germany. It's a problem of centralisation. The housing is not where the jobs are. Building housing at this time does NOT benefit anyone but investors. Those needing a home cannot afford it. Stop using housing to prop up investments and decentralise industry. And I say that as someone who has worked for decades in construction in both Germany and england.
This is only partially true, R&D in USA is done through the university system. In fact, almost all TMSC's tech comes from American R&D. The problem is that a lot of this tech doesn't transition into American companies due to the high amount of stock by backs. The real problem is that the American oil and gas industry is highly volatile due to the fact that during the "shale revolution," the USA failed to recreate a new version of production quotas that existed under the Texas Railroad Commission allowing them to manage oil prices without destroying production like OPEC. Meaning, simply passing out leases to oil companies doesn't mean that they will increase production. Companies have a tendency to hoard leases in search of hire prices.

Crime is driving it. The system is overrun by the mafia and the mafia does not do real work, else what is the point of stealing all the money and power?
More sense than I've heard talked in a while. I only take issue at the end, because I don't see how wind and solar can supplant fossil fuels. Magma Energy could, but wind and solar are diffuse, low grade and inconstant forms of energy - that need replacing every 20 years. They're currently cheap to build because they are built by a fossil fuel economy, but it would be enormously expensive to build wind with wind power - if you had to do all the mining, refining, manufacture, construction, maintenance and recycling of wind infrastructure with wind power, it wouldn't happen. The green energy transition is overstated; there are no legally binding plans to "phase down coal." And the way I see it, we'll be faced with a choice between remaining within our net zero carbon budgets by paying a King's ransom for not enough energy to go around, and making up the deficit by stamping on the poors - by pricing and taxing people out of the market for food, heat, light, clothing, travel etc. Or continuing to use fossil fuels beyond 2050, into the indefinite future. Additionally, climate change is global - not national. Addressing the problem nationally makes no sense. Even were we to build a hundred thousand windmills in the UK, if China, India, Africa, South America etc, power economic development with fossil fuels, climate change won't be solved. We need to solve climate change globally, and the only way to do that in the time available is Magma Energy, as described by Nasa/Sandia Labs in 1982, and studiously ignored for 40 years by left and right alike.

I believe Blyth is attributing excessive merit to the Trump administration. Additionally, excessive bureaucratic procedures contribute to the limited rate of construction, while the characteristics of late-stage capitalism represent a significant factor as well. When profitability is mandated and prioritized above all else, this leads to issues such as deteriorating infrastructure and instances like the Boeing case. For examples of effective public housing, one can examine the Karl-Marx-Hof complex in Vienna or note China’s extensive high-speed rail network, which is the longest and most heavily utilized in the world; such developments would likely not have occurred under a purely capitalist framework.
Mark, would you really be buying crypto when it bursts? That is the literal falling knife to catch. And there is no bottom. There is no inherent value. Can someone explain to me my precisely why Britain ditched its flagship economic partnership with China after it rolled out the red carpet to Xi Jinping in London going so far as to allow them access not just to 5G infrastructure but - the holiest of holies - nuclear powerplant design and construction (which as everyone knows is the flipside to the atomic weapons program). This was THE reason to bail on Europe (but also the US if the FT stories about us making a global push with the Renmimbi are to be believed) as it allowed the Chinese pipelines to get their money out of the country and squirrelled away within Britain's network of tax havens (with us - of course - taking a cut). I realize a certain global calamity played a significant role in undermining this relationship .... but there really was no reason for us to sever ties. Unless we were pressured by the US? In which case we've ended up with all of the negatives of pulling out of Europe and none of the proposed benefits. I find it truly remarkable that this piece of history has all but been completely airbrushed out of existence. It never happened.
I think it was because China did not respect the UK, violated the Hong-Kong treaty and the US forced the UK to give up Huawei for security reasons and China was not happy with that.
@@mcgilcol But that pressure was always going to come. Particularly since ... as the FT reported ... Britain was attempted to partner with the Renminbi to attack the Dollar.
