      @@MetulManiac Sorry Mate & also sorry to all the other Progressive posters, but no, you're wrong. See at 1:47, the bit about "When we rewrote the dictionary". Here in Oz we had a Labor (read Leftist/Communist/Progressive) Prime Minister who wound up having the Macquarie Dictionary definition of misogyny broadened to "cater" to the (at the time female) Prime Minister's viewpoint. Overall, this woman is your typical Progressive, Leftard (in the U.S., that's a Democrat) apparatchik.

    Some of the tactics I notice her using in this scene:
    - The use of "our leaders" to describe the Clark administration. Watch out when anybody is talking about the people in charge as "our leaders" rather than by their names or specific titles.
    - Her hands on her heart, which is all about drawing Sheridan's eye towards her cleavage.
    - Blatantly saying that the facts of a situation don't matter, and the ideology is more important.
    - She threatens Sheridan, not very subtly, by suggesting that continuing to talk that way will have him be reported an as unpatriotic, anarchist, troublemaker, etc.
    - "Decent, hardworking people". With the wonderful implication that anyone opposed to Clark is indecent or lazy.

      @@simondUK I think it has a place. It goes too far to where writers from the 19th century have had their books declared 'problematic' because they were the products of their time. I also think its a problem when someone gets run out of their business for being against 'politically correct' thinking. Say a baker being sued by a government out of existence for not wanting to make a cake for a gay couple. Is it stupid or mean spirited? yes. should it receive market place sanctions? yes. Is a government effort to freeze accounts, wipe out business licenses, and cost a family their revenue 'a bit' scorched earth? hell yes. Any political extreme can easily be guilty of these tactics... and often are. Reason and rationalism that leads to compromise is the ideal. Passion, rhetoric, and hardline 'tenats' are stumbling blocks and traps.

      You can use this mechanic for every political ideology. It's populism, because it is an easy catchphrase that doesn't care for circumstances or facts.
      In this scene, never is there a reference that hard work is needed or that anyone can do any job.

    It's tempting to draw parallels between this & present day - especially 2020 so far, and ESPECIALLY the last few weeks - and say something glib like "OMG B5 predicted Trump LOL!" Not that I necessarily disagree with the sentiment, but I think the reality is a little more complex.
    JMS & B5 portrayed a democratic society descending into totalitarianism & fascism in a realistic way, because it seems that he looked at real-world examples of how that really happened in the past, and then showed how the same thing could happen in a modern/futuristic setting. And it seems that many in positions of power right now have been looking to the same historical examples (or at least been inspired by the same impulses), but are taking them as how-to guides rather than cautionary tales.

    Amazing. This fictional character represents people who enable dictators. And this was about 20 years before the 2016 election. Orwellian

    • @tommiturmiola3682
      @tommiturmiola3682 5 років тому +2

      What this has to do with 2016 elections? Trump isn't a dictator (exept maybe in his mind but that is nothing new when it comes to politicians). He has less power than US presidents in general. If you want to look for a would be tyrant then look at Obama or Clinton campaing. Obama in particular. It took quite a while anyone dared even to make a joke about him in public (as in media) and he could do no wrong. Clinton was much the same and media made it clear that anyone who didn't vote for Clinton was a bad person ect. And Trump was elected largely because Clinton campaing spend some 90% of their advertisement budget for slandering Trump. If you bring up Orwell's name then you should understand that Trump is the least worrysome person in that aspect. Trump doesn't have that authority as US president usualy has and everyone knows to check first before doing anything significant that president orders.

      DS9 made a similar story (that they didn't plagiarize from B5) of our 'future' called "Past Tense" a two-parter. Use any search engine and type in "The Bell Riots". Then look up the inspiration for the story on UA-cam. It's eerie how the showrunners got the 'real' future right.

    • @samsonguy10k
      @samsonguy10k 4 роки тому +1

      Sadly it's not clairvoyance. It's history. Ultanationalism is not a new concept, and Clark's regime is rooted in many fascist governments that came about during the 1920s-1930s...not just Nazi Germany. Europe was swimming in them, and not just there.
      Ignorance and the selfish need for power is what allows it to happen again.

      The far-Right religious zealots don't believe Biology is a science. Only faith matters.
      Neil deGrasse Tyson said that COVID was a test to see whether Americans would listen to public health professionals and scientists. We didn't and 1 million died, plus those that died of other causes more so than 2019 because they weren't going to the hospital or doctors for treatment of their non-COVID symptoms.

To paraphrase a line in Harry Potter, "You deserved to be lied to if you're" still watching Fox or listening to Limbaugh's successors.
