Also my dad's bi apparently so thats neat. And my grandma is trying to be supportive as best as she can for the time she grew up in. She simply says some variation of "don't say that in public, people will try to kill you," which is a great reminder and just enough support to feel like we can live in peace.
hearing people coming out to their parents, and them being supportive, warms my heart. y'know? this should be a normal event. parents should always love their children for who they are, not who they want them to be. so remember, if you're part of the LGBTQIA+ community, remember, i support you. even if your friends, relatives, parents don't support you, just remember, that there's always a person in your life who will respect you, for who you are.
We stan supportive parents! As a pansexual, demisexual, biromantic, and genderfluid person myself, it makes me really, really happy to see such supportive parents, especially because I know mine aren't. IIRC a squish is a friend crush. IE someone you feel strongly platonically attracted to. if you've ever met someone and thought "damn, i wanna be that person's friend and hang out with them" that is a squish
I like to call myself as queer because let’s be honest, “part of the LGBTQIA community” is a mouthful and seems so formal, and although I know some queers who don’t identify as homosexual refer to themselves as gay, as an aroace who doesn’t experience same-sex attraction, it doesn’t feel right. This post makes me happy and gives me more reasons to love the label
I also prefer queer because the label Lgbtia+ is too long and I don't like to forget identities (and other global labels for the community who are shorter and more easily inclusive are less know)
I love using queer for so many reasons. I’m an enby and attracted to any gender but also don’t really seem to experience attraction in the way most do and exist on the aro/ace spectrum, but I’m also don’t fit most peoples understandings of aro/ace. I love how it lets my identity be simple while also complex. Also reclaiming the word makes me feel a sense of power and I feel like it connects me to a larger community than specific labels. 😊
I always refer to myself as queer. It's a lot easier than trying to explain, when there are multiple labels involved and many people don't understand the ones outside of homosexual, bisexual, and transgender.

"Squish" is actually a platonic enquivalent of the word "crush"! You think this person is really cool and you would love to be their best friend? You most likely have a squish! The word "squish" is just a platonic crush. This word is often used in the arospec community (I'm aroace myself), but isn't limited to it. Anyone can have a squish on someone, allosexual alloromantics too. Also, "smush" is a sexual enquivalent of crush (you're strongly sexually attracted to this person/you think they're hot? you may have a smush on them!) and "swish' is the aesthetic enquivalent of crush (you think they're absolutely gorgeous and you like their clothes/aesthetic? you may have a swish!). The alterous crush is often called "mesh" and sensual one is called lush (sensual attraction is when you enjoy physical affection with someone like hugs or cuddling without it being sexual or romantic)!
My entire life is just squishes because I have too much anxiety to try and go further. If we remain friends, cool, more great. As long as I'm included, I'm happy. Hence cosplaying.
A squish is a having an intense, but platonic, feeling toward another person as far as really, really wanting to be someone's friend. It started as a post on AVEN, I believe. The person said that since a sexual attraction is a "smash", and a romantic attraction is a "crush", then a friendship attraction would be a "squish". It makes more sense if you think about the words literally for a sec. Basically picture literally smashing something vs. literally crushing something vs. Squishing something. That's the logic, I believe.
You're right about the origin of squishes, the AVEN poster who came up with it chose it because it's a milder synonym of crushing. I personally love the word because my squishes feel like getting a big hug, so it's very accurate :)
@@Alicia-zf3nq Oh, I never thought of squishes being a big hug! I love it! I'm glad I remember the origins correctly. I saw the post, but it's been years.

I feel this way HEAVY for my best friend. She's an ethereal goddess and I love her so much, and if at one point, she had been like "Lyssa, you make my heart sing, wife me pls" I would have done it in a heartbeat (but never actively made any moves. I do kiss her face alot tho). But I'm just as happy being super close friends and watching her and her new husband build the most beautiful life and family.
@@Hopelessdemiromantic oh that's so sweet of you! Fortunately, while those feelings won't go away, I've got myself a beautiful fiancee and couldn't be happier. I feel like it's the true sense of the feeling, like I love her and it would have been dope, but since I love her so much, I don't dwell on what could've been and focus on how happy we both are now :)
There're 2 reason for this 1: most fugivorous animals usually eat the berry (or any small fruits) whole to avoid cracking the seed because most of them contain some kind of toxin (cyanide) 2: the seeds aren't usually big enough for birds to think twice before shoving the whole berry down their throat
Another fun fact: Birds can actually spread plant seeds because of that! They just poop out the whole seed. You wonder how islands originally got plant life? It's that.

For anyone who doesn't know: A "squish" is used more in the aromantic community to mean that you really wanna be good friends with someone. If I'm using it wrong, please tell me, but I am about 95% sure.
I'd say it's mostly used by the aro community but not exclusively. You can experience both platonic and romantic attraction, at the same time or separately. Or you could just have one or the other, or neither, and these are all okay
@@ascende_superius so platonic is where you wish to be friends with someone, and romantic is where you have a desire to date someone. I hope that explains it a bit :)
9:50 this single post has just answered one of my biggest issues as of late finally! I still think I would prefer to go out with them, but if I can’t ever I’m fine still being their friend because they are very cool.
8:15- Okay OT, so I doubt you’ll get to see this but there is a story about this! So a king (or knight?) got invited to a wedding feast for a fae friend of his. He invited several of his men to accompany him as guards and guests. When the festivities were over, they went to return home. The king’s friend gave him a cat as he mounted his horse and said, “Don’t jump off your horse until this cat does.” The king’s travel party departs. At some time nearing dusk, some of the group say they should stop and plan to make camp. However, the cat hasn’t jumped down yet. The king remains on his horse while some of the guards get down. The moment their feet touch the ground, they disintegrate into bones and then dust. It turns out that 300 years had passed at the wedding party, and touching the ground accelerated them to present. This is one of the origin myths for the Wild Hunt, or the band of horse riding ghosts/spirits/monsters/demons that produce the sound of thunder.
On the usage of Queer, I respect that others have reclaimed the word and use it to describe themselves as long as they don’t refer to me as such. Assuming that the people uncomfortable with the word queer are just gatekeepers erases people who may have trauma throughout their lives. More power to you that you can reclaim a word that’s been hurled at us but you don’t get to speak for those of us who don’t.
I think queer sees more usage amongst younger crowds in progressive areas. I think older LGBT peeps in rural areas tend to have been harassed with the word too much to be totally comfortable with it as a label for themselves. The people who act like everyone needs to get over their trauma and just get used to being called a triggering word should try to be a little more understanding of other people's experiences.
The word “queer” is one that we can use to describe ourselves, but that still has too much power to hurt if it’s used by someone outside the community.
Damn, that ending got me right in the feels... If anyone should be thanking anyone is me to you OT, and not the other way around. Thank you for being such a wholesome light that brings a fun and safe space for those who need it; I know I do sometimes.
That alterous attraction thing was really interesting because it's exactly what I feel for my best friend and I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like that!
Also, ace people only dont have sexual crushes, they can still have crushes, it may be aro people youre thinking of who dont experience romantic crushes :) Ace people can also have squishes of course! But it's not the ace equivilent I'm afraid :D
OT (and to others who want to know as well), to sum it up since you asked what a squish was in the video (09:15). A squish is the asexual/aromantic version of a crush. To go a bit more in depth about what a squish is: A squish is like a crush but non-romantic/sexual and it is widely used by aromantic people, asexuals and aroaces to describe our feelings since there weren't really a word for it. Also having a crush means that you fell in love and wan't to do all the stereotypical things lovers do (Kisses, close contact and "the naughtiest" to name a few), but having a squish can mean (it can be different depending on the person) that you just wan't to be with them, physical contact (not the naughty kind, cuddling and things like that) and other non sexual/romantic things but that still shows affection (also, some kiss their squish, some don't, it depends on the person and what they are ok/comfortable with). Also, I am a new aroace (as of january/february this year) and I haven't really gotten the hang of all the definitions and the "non-allo" meanings of things yet, so I might not be 100% correct with this, but I hope I am not completely wrong at least.

hearing people coming out to their parents, and them being supportive, warms my heart. y'know? this should be a normal event. parents should always love their children for who they are, not who they want them to be. so remember, if you're part of the LGBTQIA+ community, remember, i support you. even if your friends, relatives, parents don't support you, just remember, that there's always a person in your life who will respect you, for who you are.
We stan supportive parents!
I also prefer queer because the label Lgbtia+ is too long and I don't like to forget identities (and other global labels for the community who are shorter and more easily inclusive are less know)
Also my mother tongue is french I don't think the word have an history of being used as a slur in french
I use queer because I don't wanna really label myself, but I want something I can tell people. It works for loads of things.

Oh!! Knowledge!!! Thank you!!!! 💖💖💖💖💖

Wow there is so much information here 🤯🤯🤩
A squish is a having an intense, but platonic, feeling toward another person as far as really, really wanting to be someone's friend.
I love it!

Fun fact: when birds eat berry's they dont bite the seed
There're 2 reason for this
1: most fugivorous animals usually eat the berry (or any small fruits) whole to avoid cracking the seed because most of them contain some kind of toxin (cyanide)
2: the seeds aren't usually big enough for birds to think twice before shoving the whole berry down their throat
Fun fact apple seeds contain small doses of cyanide it's why you aren't supposed to eat the core

I was promised more pirate puns/dad jokes. I was lied to, an outrage I say.

As a lesbian transgender woman I want to thank you for being an amazing human.
Fr
Not everyone lives in an area where it's been reclaimed
I think queer sees more usage amongst younger crowds in progressive areas. I think older LGBT peeps in rural areas tend to have been harassed with the word too much to be totally comfortable with it as a label for themselves. The people who act like everyone needs to get over their trauma and just get used to being called a triggering word should try to be a little more understanding of other people's experiences.
The word “queer” is one that we can use to describe ourselves, but that still has too much power to hurt if it’s used by someone outside the community.

OT (and to others who want to know as well), to sum it up since you asked what a squish was in the video (09:15). A squish is the asexual/aromantic version of a crush.
To go a bit more in depth about what a squish is:
A squish is like a crush but non-romantic/sexual and it is widely used by aromantic people, asexuals and aroaces to describe our feelings since there weren't really a word for it.
As a queer person.
You are our friend; I'd open my door to you and share me table with you any day.
Thank you.
