I collected duped skins for quite some time. You have it sort of wrong, people would dupe their whole inventory not just the knives. I had at one time 5 perfectly floated brass tec-9s that looked hardcore gold. Depending on your perception though some patterns/floats are 100x more rare than a standard floated knife with nothing special. Most of these skins wound up just being on the market place, or bought by people who didn't know what they have. Low market place listing or someone inspected it thinking it looks nice. The dupes didn't hurt the skin economy at all. 1/100000000000000 chance you pull that certain pattern and float, it doesnt hurt the community that a handful of people can have access to such a rare skin. It was funny as hell when people would look at my tec-9 and be like damn that shit looks gold, and Un private my inventory and there's 4 more lol. It was not as widespread either as people make it seem, it was a small group of russians doing it. Most duped skins with rarity actually stint from a handful of accounts. Unfortunately they didn't have access to much more than what they could afford to snipe on the marketplace. I think valve finally stepped in and changed the TOS once these rubies and true rares got duped and it expanded past the group of poor russians looking for a free USD. I can only speculate but being Russian I can only assume they used an email service that has potentially since shut down or lost access to the 2FA to change their steam password or access their steam account, which is why these skins were abandoned.
Man this seems really shitty, I didn’t even know that skins could be duped, but because this exists that means that legit people can’t get replacements when they get scammed
