i don't know if i've ever heard someone talk so evocatively, so earnestly about hope and art and connection. in the place where i am, it's hard to even hear art being spoken about in a way that isn't commodified or riduculed or meaningless. especially in the age of chat gpt. it makes me want to create, even though i'm terrified of doing that. i feel like i've been sitting in the dark for a long, long time and somehow, someone has stretched out their hand.
I think this comment is a great start :) Thank you. I'm sitting in front of my work laptop at 7pm, doing overhours in my stupid corporate job, and I've recently been asked to come up with tasks where AI can replace me. I somehow got tears in my eyes reading this.
I was expecting you have a thousand other videos and there’s only like 4?!?! Girl, keep it up. Your Tendler analysis is the most concentrated I’ve ever been on a video essay. You are so eloquent and profound. Never subscribed so fast
“Refinement of a consciousness” is so delicious. An ability to synthesize even a massive amount of published writing, could never take the place of what any of us writers are attempting to do, which as I see it, is forever attempting to take the material and immaterial information we are constantly gathering and use it to explain ourselves to ourselves and others.
I do think chat gpt can be a useful tool for reinforcing standards of clarity, but in terms of producing writing that communicates an expression of that collective consciousness - definitely not.
"Forever attempting to take the material and immaterial information we are constantly gathering and use it to explain ourselves to ourselves and others" That is beautifully put
your perspective is so evocatively expressed - i'm having a great time making my way through your videos, I also came from the tendler video a few hours ago which i've sent to a friend already and i'm really glad to have found your channel!! new subscriber here :)
This is such a great perspective on the purpose of writing and art in general!! It’s funny what Vara wrote, the section contemplating whether the reader’s satisfaction being the be-all end-all of a piece of writing, as a reader, I think the writer’s personal voice is the most beautiful part. I love when you can see the influences in their writing style and the experiences they have carried along with it. I love when you can tell how personal a story is when the emotions are so intense and so heightened, it’s like “oh this has definitely happened to the writer before”, I think it is so lovely.
This is a great analysis of the issue with AI, especially given the perspective of the creative user of AI. It made me reflect on how when I use AI to author, its results surprise me many times and I have that ‘other-author’ feel (not sure what else to call it) of wonder and intimidation, that is, where did that come from? I’d never have thought of that. This is less common (but not absent) in my own work. Yet, I also recognise the other experience - when I realise an AI authored something, it immediately provokes a feeling of reading spam. Pareidolia: Jesus on toast, kittens in cloud shapes, or maybe splashed paint on a canvas before the artist looks back at where the splashes fell. Not exactly the same but nothing significantly intentional in it. Anyway, thought provoking stuff your video - thanks for making it!
I've watched 3 of your videos and read a few of your blogs in the last few days after youtube recommended your Tendler video. I can't recall the last time I found a creator whose work felt so sincere. I'm in awe. I'm jealous. I can't wait to see what else you do.
Finishing a book and feeling a loss reminds of someone I met at a writers meet-up. It seemed like they had only recently heard about print-on-demand services. They uploaded their text and ordered copies of the novel they'd been working on for years, then felt empty and were at a loss for what to do next. They said the hope of seeing their book in print was what had kept them writing, and a POD copy gave them that.
I really can’t express to you how much I love your videos - this channel’s content is some of my favorite that I’ve ever found on youtube. I’m eagerly awaiting whatever future discourse you’d like to share with us!
"she uses her own vulnerability and her fears to hold out her hand and us, as readers, understanding these complex emotions, reach out and take it." Really resonated with me.
Yeah. It's just about it hitting the critical mass where people accept this as normal. And once we're all used to it, the cost / benefit analysis will be even more skewed towards GPT.
11:15 What if you wouldn't even know which parts were written by Chat GPT? Because I think this is the goal here. People have it write stuff but tell others they wrote it. Like I'm just saying, I think many people will easily be *tricked* into empathizing with AI-written stuff *because* they are told it's somebody else's experience. And it's rude to invalidate this experience, even if you don't feel the same. The most empathetic, vulnerable people will just assume it's a valuable insight into sb else's psyche. A new perspective. That's why it's so insidious. And if you read enough of it, it won't even seem odd anymore.
Oh my gosh, when my best friend died I had so many dreams where she wasn't really dead and it was a misunderstanding. To me it wasn't guilt, it was relief and joy until I woke up.
I love hearing your thoughts because I can tell that you aren't presenting us with a word vomit of whatever pops into your head. I wish more creators and writers would edit their thoughts more deliberately, not to censor themselves but to achieve clarity. Also a sidenote, I'm not sure if it's just me but the background noise is just a tad too loud in a couple of your videos. Find myself getting a little distracted by it at times.
I have a client who uses chatgpt for her marketing copy and she's trained it to sound like her. But to me it still always sounds somehow empty. I find myself skimming over the writing. It has the "right" words but it has none of the heart.
Another nail you hit right on the head. Also, thinking about parents opting for a robo-parrot to put up a bedtime story onto a screen is... Well their kids will probably take just as good care of them when they're elderly.
I came from the Tendler video, i think your videos are so clever and sensitive and it’s so nice to have found you
Seconded! Will be referring a friend
Same here

Same! I was so surprised there are only a handful of videos
i know i'm one fish in a sea of tendler-video fans but your videos are so well-done. i did not realize this was the content i've been looking for.

congrats on being chosen by the algorithm 🎉 you really deserve the attention
Aldous Huxley is spinning in his grave and we should really look into hooking him up to the energy grid

I've loved every video essay you've posted. Keep up the good work and the earnest expression that AI can't replicate :)
Thank you so much, comments like this are a huge motivator for me!

Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to comment
this is a wonderful video and I am moved by your approach to writing, it really shifted my perspective, thank you

Yours is a cool corner of the internet to be in. Thanks for the videos and reflections!

I really appreciate your earnest and well thought out videos. Incredibly glad to find your channel. Looking forward to more!
So glad to have found this channel…more please!!! 😊
I am so thankful for your beautiful knowledge. My brain is fed well.
"she uses her own vulnerability and her fears to hold out her hand and us, as readers, understanding these complex emotions, reach out and take it." Really resonated with me.
I think the biggest danger is that readers will habituate to the blandness. Like the exhausted moms reading AI stories at the bedside. 😢
Yeah. It's just about it hitting the critical mass where people accept this as normal. And once we're all used to it, the cost / benefit analysis will be even more skewed towards GPT.

oh wow that last line made me cry very unexpectedly
