Patterns I got:
- time signature 4/4
- chord progression 2-5-1(-6+)
- jazz extensions up to 13
- modulations
- gliss and slow scale runs
RandomAwesomeism Also, when playing chords it’s a very neat trick to add a grace note a whole tone below the top voice. See 1:15 for reference.
Also, regarding the rhythm, make sure your quarter note pulse falls a bit behind the beat coming from the drum loop (microseconds).
So many professional here (° ꈊ °)
@@bilaldent3577 lol nah i honestly just threw in some random observations for personal study but, great to see y'all liked it :)
@Sandra Felicia wait is that a b&w edit of blackpink racing karts to the chicken? i'm gonna say hell yeah to that
Basically play whatever you want. As long as there’s enough compression on the snare you’re good to go
Well actually... Yea you right
What’s a snare l💀
the thing that goes BMSSHH
Yea the living proof of that is brett's lofi
Um no no lol it’s the second sound in ba dum tss. If u know what I mean
your diversity is unbelievable
It is still jazz. You mean still a very good pianist
Le Mentholé Yeah but not all jazz sounds like lofi. You can’t play ragtime over a drum beat and vinyl crackle and expect it to sound idiomatic. That’s why I’m so shocked to hear such a tasteful rendition.
hulloclayton I'm skeptical of that proposition. With the right arrangement, yes actually.
@@hulloclayton6685 90% of Lofi music is samples from jazz classics.
@@hulloclayton6685 You kinda can tho
OMYGAWDDDD THIS IS WHAT I NEVER THOUGHT OF ASKING FOR BUT NEEDED
Don't use God's name in vain please.
xD
That was so badly worded
Jigs Falcon he used GAWDDD’s name in vain.
Jigs Falcon he used GAWDDD’s name in vain.
This type of stuff makes me want to genuinely learn theory instead of just cram studying the bare minimum required for branch honors on my theory test every year. I don’t wanna work as a musician, but in some point in my life, I’d like to be good enough to just be able to experiment on the piano and know what I’m doing.
Update: I'm skipping Level 9 this year because corona will make the tests easier, so I'm now on Level 10. The last level in my state. After March, I won't have to worry about these stupid tests, and I can actually enjoy piano. Hopefully then I'll have time to experiment with this instrument I've devoted more than half my life to. But for now, I'll wait for February to cram theory again for the last time
Edit because I'm back here again: Finally done with those stupid piano tests! Time to actually have fun playing piano
11/10/21 Edit because I'm back yet again: Nowadays I'm extremely busy, but I always love being able to sit down and play piano at the end of the day. When I have time again (maybe senior year), I'm gonna get into composing
i know EXACTLY how you feel. Growing up I had to do those stupid piano exams and I hated doing those theory books soooo much. I would legit be on the verge of tears from anger whenever my mom forced me to them. I got through all the levels and I told myself I was done with theory. Then now I'm watching people like Jacob Collier and Charles Cornell, and they make stuff sound so fascinating! And it's like, I recognize the terms and the basic stuff but I wish I had grown an appreciation from a young age instead of cramming the info inside me.
@@esthershih5575 ooooh it's so weird to hear the other side of the history, in my case my parents never forced any instrument on me, even though they played a few, and now im 27 and trying to learn the piano from scratch is soooo hard hahaha, like i wish i took theory and piano lessons when i was younger! but then maybe if i did i would have hated it like you guys hahah, oh life
MirzaEster oh haha that is pretty weird to hear. My Asian mom was a piano teacher so she was really insistent on me going through all 11 levels. I also had to do ABRSM testing for cello too!! But I only did like 3 levels.
I think I finished the testing (I think it’s called CM/California merit) by the time I was in 8th grade and I took a year long break where I didn’t even touch the piano, because I was so burnt out. But then after the break my interest sparked again so now I’m playing whatever I want.
esther shih well, you're lucky that you get to play the piano really good now, it's never a bad thing to know an instrument :)
MirzaEster yeah looking back at it I get where my mother was coming from and I really do appreciate how she pushed piano on me even though I wanted to quit. I’m a person who doesn’t like being forced to do things so back then I grew a hatred for piano. I think I just needed some time and space to explore the instrument.
This is the equivalent of an artist coming in and saying this is how you paint a duck and then proceeds to paint a duck with no explanations
Learn music theory and you'll understand why there's no explanation
you want her to what? walk through each chord and voicing? you must not be a musician
There’s literal sheet music there lol
If u understand the basic patterns like 2-5-1, 2-5-1 turn arounds, relative minors, minor modulation etc. It makes it a lot easier to learn more theory by example. If u already know that a duck is painted with yellow, it makes it easier to understand what other shades of yellow u can use to give it more detail. I understand ur confusion tho lol, I personally get pretty confused myself
What’s wrong with that
Number 7 is from the beginning of misty by Ella Fitzgerald
i knew it
Yesss thank you it was soooo familiar
How? I keep going back to that song and I don't hear the similarities. I'mma listen to it more then.
And the one before it is called Tea For Two
Number 3 is autumn in New York
If I could just learn to play piano like this I'd drop 50 lofi beats a week 😔
It takes a lot of practice
I mean, it's not like you can't learn it like this...
You still can!
There's nothing saying you can't. I've been practicing for about a year now and I've made progress. You can always dedicate some of your time to learning how to play like this.
Well, you can!
This might be the best piano training on youtube.
1:11 my favorite chord
Just bought 10 of your sheets on your website. You're such an incredibly talented person, I'm glad you're sharing your music with the world!
Also, I think you should raise the prices on some of these pfds. Holy moly, some of these are like... literal books. 30+ pages is insane for 10$, 5 with your discount!! You deserve way more money for some of these, your work is incredible!
@@kuzuchan3361 Yeah, that's a devaluation of her talent.
2:27 a nice nod to the intro to the jazz classic standard Misty. Beautiful
this is edited so simply and clean, this was way better than i expected, i thought it was some crappy tutorial. incredible
Wat do you mean

I just found you (thank you UA-cam algorithm) and I have to say that you are soooo talented. Your voicings are out of this world. I've been trying to learn jazz. All of the basic stuff makes sense to me and I was looking for something more advanced, and I have to say I've learned way more just watching your videos than anything I've seen so far. There's a lot of really good stuff here to chew on and think about. I really like that you have the notes up on the screen because sometimes you just need that extra bit of help to make sense of what you're hearing. Keep it up!
Thank you so much for the time you spend and the effort to publish these great lessons for jazz. You have helped me so much with my playing style.
You can now listen to this in my Soundcloud account! Thanks for watching my video!!!!!!!
Thank you! I really like this. It's nice hearing lofi hip hop that isn't the same 4 or 8 bars repeated.
Just @t xd
The UA-cam algorithm strikes again! Literally working on a LoFi album right now and this is a perfect reference!
how to play lofi piano: don't play piano, just sample old jazz songs nobody knows about

Watching From The Philippines! 🇵🇭 🇵🇭
The two people who gave this a thumbs down are likely just made because they cannot play it. I love these videos they are so good. Every time I am like Jimin is a superhuman
Nice Errol Garner feel with some Robert Glasper chords.
This sounds like how Errol garner plays, very nice
I like how the chords are especially II - V - I passages with some tritone substitution, it could be even a good jazz exercise
That is expected to be honest in a lofi composition since most of these compositions that are in the genre of lofi follows jazz standards.
this feels like more than just lofi hip hop wow
*The tutorial we never thought we'd need*
That was so relaxing and the symphony go in my ear with full of attitude
i came to learn how to compose jazzy lofi chords but now im just depressed when i see how you execute this so easily :_: so impressed
as a former pianist, i must say that this has touched me in other ways i never have been touched before, no homo.
Unbelievable this is so good, combining sounds from different song, amazing
I peeped this right after the Ghibli joint. My head is just nodding on it's own! Again, thank you!
It’s as if Erroll Garner was playing chillhop 50 years before anyone else.
I was gonna say George Shearing. But yeah, very Garner sound. Those octaves with close voicing in between. Pretty timeless.
This is fantastic, ive been making lofi on guitar, def gonna try out some of your examples
edit: I made a track using the first one on guitar, might learn some of the others and make some more.

Lovely!
Modern jazz music. I will add this music in my playlist due to comparison of early jazz musics released in 1920~1950 and modern jazz.
Beautiful chords. This is how we should livee!!!!!!
Chopin would be proud of the left hand at 2:05 :) Love it.
honestly one of best lofi tracks ive heard... just beautiful
dude you're genuinely world class
this is amazing. you hit the definition of lofi. I will definitely learn how to play this. thank you 🥰
Thank you. A good lofi tutorial that isn't just 3 long... static ...monotonous chords
The third one sounds really good ❤
If you realize you can put them together and become a whole original lofi song. Nice!
Ah, this is the blissfully intelligent but nice and calming people are. I like it.
#6 reminds me of Tea for Two, especially the 1933 Art Tatum recording! Also, all of these are amazing to listen through.
Definitely need a Rhodes sound for these
I have yet to find a more versatile and helpful channel than yours. Been a fan for quite a while!!!!
I recognize 7 from Misty :D
And 6 is Tea for Two.
And 4 is Ahmad Jamals I love music
This is the style that young jazz pianist need to learn and add to their playing. Its missing in jazz today.

very erroll garner.... one thing that does irk me about lofi is when they do the first four bars of a standard and they never keep going. Just play the rest dammit!
Same haha. When you're hoping to hear the next tune but it never happens.
That's the point of the whole thing. The ''hint'' to the past. Not really doing it...etc...
Yeah, even if they don’t play the rest, it would be nice to have tracks develop ideas a bit further (or is that antithetical to the genre or lo-fi?)
i think some middle ground between infinite 4-bar loop and a whole standard is ideal for that style. the beat and sonic warping artifacts should develop and listener can't give that any attention if the music is straight up jazz
if you haven't heard it check out coldcut's autumn leaves from 1993, it's in between 80s sophistipop and 90s triphop. the beat's just a loop but the strings and piano were an original arrangement ua-cam.com/video/_RsPbmST1zw/v-deo.html
For sure buying this in couple weeks for the sheet music once I get my piano set up in my new place. I'd love to put on a drum beat and just flow some piano on top of that.
Erroll Garner style. Great stuff! I love this style.
