  • The Pac-12 is a thing in the past with Oregon and Washington heading to the Big Ten and Arizona, Arizona State and Utah joining Colorado in the Big 12. Colin Cowherd reacts to the near-end of the Pac-12. The USWNT were stunned by Sweden in a 5-4 loss by penalty kicks. This is the first time the U.S. has been knocked out at the round of 16. Colin defends the team, then shares his biggest takeaways from the disappointing outcome.

Lol I don’t think the problem with College Football is the lack of great games. The problem is that if your not in the playoff conversation then your irrelevant and if a game dosent have playoff implications then it dosent matter. Washington vs Oregon St was one of the best games in CFB last year and nobody talked about it because neither team was in the playoff race.

The USWNT was good enough to win the World Cup, even without the injured stars who were missing from the roster. They played poorly in the group play. That put them in the position to be playing Sweden. The stars aligned perfectly for them in the PK shootout and the player who all the media told us was the world's best free kick player shanked it. That was her one moment in the tournament to contribute to the effort and she wasn't up to the task. Her PK was horrendous. To say it wasn't their day is ludicrous. The win was right there in front of them. That moment was the major reason Rapinoe was on the roster. It wasn't because of her speed, that's nonexistent. It wasn't because of her tenacious defending, that's also nonexistent. It wasn't because of her "veteran leadership", she has never exhibited leadership that put the team first. It wasn't a dark cruel joke. It was karma. I'm so happy that's the moment that ends her World Cup career. She's most deserving of it.

There are in many ways bills that Power 5 school athletic programs invent, such as $8 million salaries for coaches and opulent facilities. We are talking about college here. Most of the students live on a shoestring budget and no one is there to get rich while there, it's supposed to be about learning.

HOWEVER, we should've won 3 in a row and the only reason we didn't is not because of the squad, but because the US Soccer Federation hired a coach who should be coaching high school as their head coach. This falls 90% on him and his stupid/bizarre decisions. If we hired a competent coach, we win this World Cup. The US Soccer Federation has a talent for hiring coaches that regress the talent we have. Don't be too hopeful for the next mens World Cup Colin, we rehired Berhalter, a TERRIBLE coach.

As far as the USWNT is concerned, there is a small truth that isn't being recognized. Instead that small truth is getting lost in the welter of hand wringing, blame assignment and political jabs. That small truth is the United States, as a nation, just doesn't play soccer that well. We don't live it, breath it or grok it like other nations do. Soccer is not King here like it is in other places around the world and it never will be. We'll always be a soccer "also ran"; good but not great and with all the other sports options (Football, Basketball, Baseball, Hockey etc) U.S. athletes have to choose from, we'll never be great.
Gen X was the first soccer playing generation in the U.S. and that was three generations ago. Since then our men's program has become decent, but we're still a second tier soccer playing nation. The men's program doesn't have a signature win over a soccer powerhouse nation since the own goal win over Columbia in 1994. And even if there was a "signature win" the U.S. sports fans would care for about 20 minutes or until the next NFL game.
Title IX helped give the woman's game in the US a head start on the rest of the world. However, once the soccer playing nations of the world set their minds to supporting their national women's teams, most of them with a fraction of the resources of the US women's soccer program, they caught up in a rush. In fact, in terms of tactically and strategically and in terms understanding and executing the game, they blew right past the U.S. The U.S. can't just show up and bully everyone with superior athletes with more experience anymore. Truthfully, we're fast approaching the tipping point where if women's soccer players in the US want to take their games to the next level, they're going to have to start looking to play abroad like male soccer players in the US have had to for decades.
Because they're lost in the cacophony of finger pointing, the analysts in the U.S. are all asking the wrong question. The question isn't "How did we lose this Women's World Cup?". The question they should be asking is, "Now that the rest of the world is focused on this sport, can we ever win another Woman's World Cup?" If they men's program is any indication, the prospects are not good. That stinks for the future members of USWNT because the team's reputation was based on world domination, which they can never replicate again.
