There are a few UA-cams on doing this. Basically, the tools are simple. They are knife edged and are pushing the wood apart, the wire is hammered in, and others wet the wood to expand it back around the wire. Sand flush.
What he did here is a bit unique in he had a few special tools. The circles and arcs he did with a single hit of a single shaped tool. Others would have used a small punch the size of I. or twice as long, and repetitiously push or punch the groove. 0:35 he is using a straight punch and is producing a curved line.
I'm looking at doing it more his way and producing a few specialized tools for arcs and spirals. If I make most of my designs based on those tools it will speed things along, as this guy showed. Not everything has to be based on the special tools, but it does move things along if you compare his straight curved line and 2:06 you can just barely see it is like a 1/4 of a circle arc. but look how much easier it is to produce the small arcs.
The other advantage is the curve or arc is always perfect, as perfect as you made the punch anyway.
The tools themselves can be reground wood carvers or simply razor blades reshaped and set in whatever handle you want.
