I agree with you. When I was using a piece of railroad track, though I was very grateful to have it. I wanted nothing more then to have good Square corners. And a true flat face
RXR track is better..... At least you know it is not an anvil...... The other one just looks like an anvil. Lol. I do agree that it least it has some usable things lile a hardy and edges. Beyond the hardness and a million other issues. I never hear anyone talk about is the shape of the horn. If the horn is not round, shaping on the horn makes everything just that much more complicated.... I have been forging for a living 30 years shoeing horses, I am in the fire literaly daily. Your begging shoulder issues. If the horn has a flat spot on top, you have to shift your body across the far side of the horn to get a radius. Changing your posture 8 gazilion hammer blows over a lifetime of forging shortens that lifespan. Your time you can enjoy forging will be diminished. Lastly as the radius in now compacted your margin for error increases exponentialy. Believe me I know anvils are expensive.... I have had 5 in 30 years. You must consider, it is the heart of the shop. They are cheep. Way way way cheeper than a rotator cuff surgery. Get a serious anvil and forge. I still use my orignal forge in the shop. I have done 30 years of forging with 3 gas forges and 3 coal forges. I could have still been using my original anvil but it was too heavy for in and out of the truck 5x a day. It was a 165lb Peter Wright. To proove im not talking smack my next anvil had a flat spot. 125lb Mankle. Now I rock a 100lb Emerson traditional in the truck for 18 years. 150lb Emerson on a 300lb base in the shop. I have a 100+ year old Trenton my son uses. 100years of service... a good anvil is cheep. All round horns. Good tools change your life. Bad tools can make the simple job so much harder you quit befor you get proficiant. Invest in your succsess with real tools.
I like "blather and silly laughter", at the moment it makes the world go round. Thanks for the information re putting a hardened plate on the anvil, I’ve got some 01 steel coming but your idea kills two birds with one stone. I need to improve my stick welding, so this will give me plenty of practice. My anvil is a cast iron one I bought online here in the U.K., I’m presuming it’s just the same as a Harbour Freight.
There’s an olde saying “you have to go threw a few 5s or 6s before you can appreciate a 10” That’s the HF anvil... it does move metal...but...... I still have it and use for punching/chiseling
HA! RR track, definitely better. I have one that I carry on road jobs. Beats lugging the real 100 pound anvil. Plus it has nice areas for making curves and good sharp edges for taper denting. Plus it cost 5 bucks at an estate sale.
I was going to argue about the opportunity between RR Tracks, and HF anvil, but you answered, just as quickly ..."the forge is strong, in Roy". ❤️❤️⚒️⚒️😀😀👍👍
I worked with some scrap steel plates for about a year before I bought myself a peter wright anvil. But that was back when anvils were $3 per lb here. Now I would either make an anvil or buy a new nimba because they are so overpriced where I live
Ok ok I admit I'm just here for the cat. Milk duds the best...oh and hearing Roy Adams laugh. Whoda known he was like the best blacksmith channel out there. Ok ok one of the best. Definitely in my top 5 go to Chanel that I refuse to pick favorite from. 💜 Ya Roy and family 🙏 God bless yall now Crawford out
Everyone tells me how easy it is to find a piece of railroad track but I have trains that run right by my house and every place I go to says it is illegal to sell RR track. I live in New Hampshire, live free or die my arse.
The need for the 'perfect anvil' is overblown. I use one of the 55lb Harbor Freight anvils, and yeah, it ain't perfect, easily dimples, but for the occasional amateur blacksmithing project, it does the job just fine. After all, we're not making precision watch parts here! ;-)
Hey Roy, I saw you on Alecs livestream and I donated cash to him just like I've done for you but it was 100 bucks because I was selfish and really wanted him to answer . I will do the same for your next livestream if I can but I bought an anvil so I dont need to be in the givaway. With all that being said can you help me or tell me how to get ahold of him cause he said he was gonna help out with one of his classes and I seemed to have missed some instructions. Btw I'll be using some of your instruction for the hardy tools I think.
Of course you had to mention the comment about your furry companion Milk Dud so I immediately paused this Vid and watched you do the Harbor Freight unboxing video, just so I could see the true Star of that episode getting disgruntled with the fact that you didn't turn the heater on! Shame on you... 🐈

I personally went the rail track route worked good I ground in a horn and Pritchett hole but proceeded to buy my anvil within a few months.

Billy Gildark. That’s what I used mine for until I gave it to a buddy who wanted to give it a try.

Always up for a good argument 😆

God bless you sir
Interes, I have plenty of railroad track available. Was considering....... mount the curved surface down maybe?
That's doable but the catch is that the bottom face isn't as thick as the top so you'd need to add some gussets to make it more beefy.
Could you potentially forge / grind a piece of railroad rail to an anvil shape?
Many guys have videos about that and even ASO (anvil shaped objects)!!! Just search you tube sir.

Good info as always Roy👍

Not sure how to get a hold of Alec I would assume you need to Dm him through his Instagram.. :-)
Do you ever respond to the comment section?
Yep just not to all... 4000+ comments a month across nearly 1400 videos....vs one guy.
People who don’t like Roy’s laugh just don’t get it. #Roysourboy
