  • This TEDxSantaCruz talk is part of 22 surrounding our theme of “the Art of Hope.” Defined as the anticipation of something desired happening, hope is ferocious, persistent, necessary; hope is a powerful force for invention, change, and social justice. To hope is to be human.
Our fifth TEDxSantaCruz event was held on December 7, 2019, at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz, CA. www.tedxsantacruz.org/ Jonathan Franze is a novelist, essayist, journalist, translator, and screenwriter. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Letters and the author of five novels, including The Corrections, Freedom, and Purity, and five volumes of nonfiction, most recently The End of the End of the Earth. Among his honors are the National Book Award for fiction, and the EuroNatur Award, for his work in conservation. He lives full-time in Santa Cruz. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

If we want to tackle the climate catastrophe we must boost our conservation efforts AND insist on emissions at the same time!

You're exactly right. This monolithic focus on climate change bugged me from the beginning.

We need the government to do the right thing. Give up money. If you cant accept the fact that its coming then just help anyways. If the world ends what good will money do you anyways? We have to think about the right thing to do.

I love Franzen, but I'm not convinced that a focus on climate change comes at the expense of an indifference towards conservation. We can walk and chew gum at the same time.

The first time I am seeing complaints about obsession of climate change coming from the green left groups... yes, I understand climate problems, but there are more concrete actions to take...

When the whole airplane is crashing (climate change), fastening your seatbelt (saving a seabird) and putting up your tray table isn't going to improve the outcome. But you can "feel" good for a while, and that's important, too, I guess.
