Derek Gill no not really, in causal play, a lot more things are going on. Items, bombs, final smashes, daybreak’s, etc. when something that small and rare happens, it’s a lot harder to notice. I didn’t notice either (no, I’m not a causal fan, I love competitive play).

They probably told them to focus more on plays with items or smash balls instead of actual gameplay. Keep in mind that a lot of the audience were probably causal players. The audience probably didn’t know who these people were or what plays they were making. The commentators were probably told to keep it at their place so they could understand.

honestly this looks really cool for a competitive play. It's not doubles, but actually a team strike. Seeing gameplay "occasionally" fight around smash ball does actually make it a pretty interesting, such as in the bit where shiek took the risk to get it, but ended up dying as a result. The biggest issue with the smash ball i feel, isn't the item itself, but the super large imbalance between all the final smashes...

This isn't even the first time Nintendo has done this. And I think there is plenty of reason to complain. Items aren't bad in and of themselves when characters like Peach and R.O.B. can summon them with their specials, but random items spawning creates an element of RNG in an environment that is supposed to reward the player playing better. It's the same reason people hated rage in Smash 4, and that was a mechanic WITHOUT RNG. There's also a huge flaw in your argument about how Nintendo shouldn't be going about with the standard competitive ruleset in that Nintendo will ALWAYS get more exposure than events hosted by fans. This gives off the pretense that this is what competitive smash bros is like, by a company that was so against their games being competitive, they even tried to remove it from EVO with Melee. It gives me no hope that Nintendo will ever understand what makes competitive smash tick.
GiraPrimal, the competitive community is the smash community. There is no other community. You’re going to locals and events and watching tournaments at home or you’re having some friends over every couple weeks and play smash in the background. There isn’t really an in between.

No, Sakurai intentionally made the game when returning to it's competitive roots as well as improving rules that endorse competition. The marketing also displayed this with the addition of showing these features in the Directs and Sakurai stating that there will be invitational competitions that invited the best competitive Smash 4 player, Zero. Nintendo is competitive atleast when it comes to Smash

This tournament wasn’t too bad; it’s not perfect, nothing is but it shows what the game is at its core, showing off the features and stuff. It doesn’t have to follow traditional rules. Also it’s more intriguing for onlookers, which it what you want, it catches the eyes more.
It's fine for a World Cup(which let's face it, that's what this was), but it had a distinct amount of top player representation missing, don't tell me a team with 3 of MKLeo, Samsora, Dabuz, Ally, Marss, VoiD, NAKAT, and Tweek wouldn't have beaten this Team Japan NA vs Japan at Frostbite 2019 would have been a fair comparison of the two regions(NA 8-10 JP-Japan wins with 5 stocks), but if EU won, there would have been much objection to the item format screwing a top player like Zackray like what happened to Ken in 2008
This is more fun to watch. The randomness is what makes it fun. Competitive smash is not as fun to watch, but still tense. I guess I prefer fun rules to 'fair' rules.

When you see the comments, I think most of the people think Super Smash Bros is a game which only uses for competitions. I don't think there is any problem to use items (well low items), because this game is made for fun, for all people who truly likes this game which is not just for strict competitions always, and this is actually what Sakurai wants to see when he starts the project of Super Smash Bros.

Theoretically, a really good player like Zackray could be beaten by some wifi warrior if the latter manages to obtain a gust bellows. This is the type of problem that items-on can cause. Everybody in the real Smash competitive scene agrees that it should be down to skill and that RNG should be eliminated.
I mean, a lot of Ultimate's Top Tier characters are women (or have a female alt). No joke: Pikachu, Peach, Daisy, Lucina, Inkling, ZSS, Palutena and PT are all either female or have female alts. It makes sense that there'd be a lot of female characters.

Items are fun, but they can absolutely lean a battle towards a win or a loss based on pure luck alone. No competitive game should have a strong luck factor, and Smash with items does.

God dang! Who knew watching top players play with items can be quite entertaining! Adds a little twist, strategy and luck in the mix. Seeing this actually doesn't make me mind having Nintendo set up tournaments like this. Besides, we also got Evo for the bigger meatier stuff that most of us watch. If anything, what Nintendo is doing is easing in new players to the competitive scene and helping them have a taste of what it can be like if those new players decide to take it a step further.
That world championship was ultimate! Games are really meant to be fun. Guys, if you don't like items and casual rulesets, these are not for you. Even Touhou does not need fanservice either.
The problem is not that we cannot accept one tornament, but that what is essentially supposed to be the world championship that showes us who is the best does not use a ruleset that allows true skill to be the factor of winning. Also the competetive scene for smash is one of the oldest there is, and the fact that nintendo has not only never showed real support for the smash scene but now they go with their largest tornament ever with a uncompetitive ruleset shows they really don't care about smash's competetive scene. If we could get nintendo's support the esprit would grow to an enormous size, will probably have twice the entrance than any other sport on EVO for example

MKLeo would have made more money by playing in actual tournaments than playing the items on 7 minutes time mode qualifiers. This is why most of the North American pros didn't enter. Also a Canadian major conflicted with the qualifiers.
Unpopular opinion, I like item tournaments. It feels fresh and more exciting because there is an extra degree of randomness. Also final smashes can be hype.
Items tournaments aren't exactly disliked, but they're just forsaken cause they lack competitive integrity. People like being rewarded for skill, and items kind of cloud that up. But final smashes? Press B and win? You're on your own bud.
I agree to some extent, I personally enjoy the item/smashball/stage hazard matches once every 200 QuickPlay matches too, because the change of pace it brings makes the game feel more fresh, but I would never want to compete under these rules or have the community compete regularly under these rules. The damage to competitive integrity is simply too big.

Here from watching VODs of the hardcore competitive scene, and I gotta say: this looks more like Smash Bros with items on. Makes me remember why I loved the game in the first place... Unfortunately, I can't fully respect the victory.
I always wanted to see a tournament series where pro players would give their all but with the chaos that I knew Smash as - items, hazards, variance, RNG, all the crazy stuff that Smash is right out of the box. These were the only tournaments I cared enough about to watch. Now that the next Nintendo-run Smash events have turned off items, I have no reason to watch. It's "just another tournament" now, as opposed to being the one thing that would let me see Smash the way I hoped to see it played.
All the good smash bros players wouldn't go, so they got a bunch of new people... And Zackray, who is one of the top 10 Ultimate players worldwide lol. So that's how it happened haha.

At least they have more stages than other tournaments..I'm tired of seeing the same 5 stages over and over again...They should at least use omega and battlefield forms when they use battlefield and final destination.
007GoldenLion Another problem with that is the fact that FD has a smaller blastzone than battlefield, so if the did a battlefield stage on FD, characters with good off the top kills would be too op.

This tournament wasn’t too bad; it’s not perfect, nothing is but it shows what the game is at its core, showing off the features and stuff. It doesn’t have to follow traditional rules. Also it’s more intriguing for onlookers, which it what you want, it catches the eyes more.
It's fine for a World Cup(which let's face it, that's what this was), but it had a distinct amount of top player representation missing, don't tell me a team with 3 of MKLeo, Samsora, Dabuz, Ally, Marss, VoiD, NAKAT, and Tweek wouldn't have beaten this Team Japan
NA vs Japan at Frostbite 2019 would have been a fair comparison of the two regions(NA 8-10 JP-Japan wins with 5 stocks), but if EU won, there would have been much objection to the item format screwing a top player like Zackray like what happened to Ken in 2008

This is more fun to watch. The randomness is what makes it fun. Competitive smash is not as fun to watch, but still tense. I guess I prefer fun rules to 'fair' rules.
@@TexelGuy The June Open will feature a more restricted item list, but I find that getting unlucky because a bomb spawned into an attack you were charging to not be fun to watch and incredibly deflating

When you see the comments, I think most of the people think Super Smash Bros is a game which only uses for competitions. I don't think there is any problem to use items (well low items), because this game is made for fun, for all people who truly likes this game which is not just for strict competitions always, and this is actually what Sakurai wants to see when he starts the project of Super Smash Bros.
Games are made for fun. But it is much more interesting and fun for most people when it isn't down to item RNG.

Theoretically, a really good player like Zackray could be beaten by some wifi warrior if the latter manages to obtain a gust bellows. This is the type of problem that items-on can cause. Everybody in the real Smash competitive scene agrees that it should be down to skill and that RNG should be eliminated.

@@lunarnachoz9083 Casuals that I refer to tend to prefer what most would consider bad rules; things that don't prioritize skill as much and lean more towards randomness and unfairness. (such as items and random stages)
Items are fun, but they can absolutely lean a battle towards a win or a loss based on pure luck alone. No competitive game should have a strong luck factor, and Smash with items does.
Ramen. Because this is a tournament. A show of skill. Items require very little skill, trivialize the game, and add an insane amount of luck. That's why. As for it being a Nintendo run event, we've been asking for a Real Nintendo tournament for years, and they keep giving us this. Unskilled players (except Zackray for some reason, he decided to go) in a non competitive luck based "tournament"

God dang! Who knew watching top players play with items can be quite entertaining! Adds a little twist, strategy and luck in the mix. Seeing this actually doesn't make me mind having Nintendo set up tournaments like this. Besides, we also got Evo for the bigger meatier stuff that most of us watch. If anything, what Nintendo is doing is easing in new players to the competitive scene and helping them have a taste of what it can be like if those new players decide to take it a step further.

They only disabled pokeballs, masterballs and throphies (thankfully, because throphies are waaay too broken haha)

Guys, if you don't like items and casual rulesets, these are not for you. Even Touhou does not need fanservice either.
The problem is not that we cannot accept one tornament, but that what is essentially supposed to be the world championship that showes us who is the best does not use a ruleset that allows true skill to be the factor of winning. Also the competetive scene for smash is one of the oldest there is, and the fact that nintendo has not only never showed real support for the smash scene but now they go with their largest tornament ever with a uncompetitive ruleset shows they really don't care about smash's competetive scene. If we could get nintendo's support the esprit would grow to an enormous size, will probably have twice the entrance than any other sport on EVO for example

Sure, they're making some good decisions with patches, but they've also made stupid decisions like nerfing K rool who before nerfs, was mid tier at best. They just look at elite smash. MKLeo would have made more money by playing in actual tournaments than playing the items on 7 minutes time mode qualifiers. This is why most of the North American pros didn't enter. Also a Canadian major conflicted with the qualifiers.

Unpopular opinion, I like item tournaments. It feels fresh and more exciting because there is an extra degree of randomness. Also final smashes can be hype.

Items tournaments aren't exactly disliked, but they're just forsaken cause they lack competitive integrity.
People like being rewarded for skill, and items kind of cloud that up.

I agree to some extent, I personally enjoy the item/smashball/stage hazard matches once every 200 QuickPlay matches too, because the change of pace it brings makes the game feel more fresh, but I would never want to compete under these rules or have the community compete regularly under these rules. The damage to competitive integrity is simply too big.

I always wanted to see a tournament series where pro players would give their all but with the chaos that I knew Smash as - items, hazards, variance, RNG, all the crazy stuff that Smash is right out of the box. These were the only tournaments I cared enough about to watch. Now that the next Nintendo-run Smash events have turned off items, I have no reason to watch. It's "just another tournament" now, as opposed to being the one thing that would let me see Smash the way I hoped to see it played.

Eh, fuggit, man. People joining this tournament know what they’re getting themselves into, and it simply promotes a different playstyle. Although rng can reward players, you can be punished for trying to grab items in neutral and having stage control grants you all the items.

007GoldenLion Why? There’s no reason to do so, battlefield will be battlefield, and FD will be FD.
007GoldenLion Another problem with that is the fact that FD has a smaller blastzone than battlefield, so if the did a battlefield stage on FD, characters with good off the top kills would be too op.
