Achalasia cardia - results from damage to nerves in the oesophagus (food tube), characterised by absence of peristalsis and tight gastroesophageal sphincter, preventing the oesophagus from squeezing food into the stomach. Symptoms include backflow of food in the throat (regurgitation), chest pain, malnutrition and weight loss. Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) is an effective method to treat this disorder.
