I have read sci fi since 1959. Somehow, I missed this one. Thanks for refreshing that sense of being part of a crew that fought until they overcame or died valiantly. The friends I made in these kinds of stories helped me through the terrible teens. I feel good again!

Dont know why but Ive noticed many folks are first exposed to this series with Galactic Patrol, including me. I couldnt put the book down and finished it in two days. This was mid 60's and I was 13 years old. At the front of the book was a list of "other books from this author". I was totally elated and immediately checked a local used book store and found Triplanetary. I was a kid coming from Andre Norton and Hugh Walters.

EE Doc Smith is an under rated sci-fi author. He wrote 2 space opera series: Lensmen (starting with this book) and Skylark - both are compelling. He also wrote the first 2 books in the sub space series. The second (“Encounter”) was published posthumously in 1983.

Completely omits the first encounter with the Edorians, the Atlantis, Fall of Rome and the World Wars 1, 2 and 3 parts of the novel despite describing them in the notes. Are the first chapters not public domain as well?

There are a lot of books like that. A shorter version. And a long one. The long one will more than likely have the first 3 chaptera mentioning the atlantis stuff. Look up the forgotton planet. Beautiful book. Same concept. The short version has the entire "im lost adventure" that motivated the whole plot. But short version has it cut out. Because it can be said curiosity could have led to the plot as well. The main adventure if you will. Idk this book very well or i would have used it as reference. Hope this helped.

Sol (Sun) is white, not yellow. At 4:17:35, "toward the yellowish star which they knew to be old Sol", & at 4:20:40, "The yellow star that was the Sun". Perhaps, Edward Elmer Smith, Ph.D. was writing about the Earth with its yellow Sun in the outer edge of the Sagittarius Arm (where Neil deGrasse Tyson and Carl Sagan said we are located), not this Earth we are on with its white Sun on the other side of and near the galactic bulge in the middle of the Orion Spur. Even Tyson acknowledges this Earth's Sun is white, not yellow ua-cam.com/video/C9MdbxPCSYw/v-deo.html

This book was written in 1934. Cut the author some slack.
Yes the sun looks white, but when most people look up at the sun it's during the later part of the day when you can look at the sun without being blinded and at that time it looks yellow or red during the sunset. But technically it's really green. But our eyes are very sensitive to that particular color of green. Go back and study your solar spectrum a little bit.

I've always remembered the sun being yellow when I was a child. It's only recently say mid nineties that the sun felt stronger, brighter and white. I always thought it was because of the destruction of the ozone layer. However, I've learned that the ozone has repaired itself already.

Yes Read. This has ok story, stilted dialog, and if you can get past the dated bits (all white men and one single young damsel in distress), this book has the basics for a true science fiction. A little science, a lot of spaceships, a little magic (ftl), and worthy opponents in an alien species (are they evil or is is just miscommunication?), and a human crazy mad scientist determined to rule the world. I would suggest if you like science fiction with no fantasy, then you will probably like this book. NOTE: Please someone re-write this story, and remove the young woman who has to be saved all the time! Sharpen the dialog. Mix up the crew so they are not all white men.
