Hail Columbia! Hail Challenger! Hail Discovery! Hail Atlantis! Hail Endeavour! God bless these beautiful spacecraft and the hundreds of men and women who flew on them over the years!! ❤
When I saw a diagram of the Shuttle's flightpath after entry and before landing, I was struck by how similar it is to what every glider pilots uses, a base leg, a 45, wide turn, a pre-flare, a flare when lowering the wheels, airbrakes / parachute after touchdown, keep 'er straight.
DOn't know why, but whenever I see one of the shuttles come to a stop, I picture John Young getting out of the first one and walking around and looking up at it with at "my God, it worked!" expression on his face. Always makes me smile.
My favorite part of these landings is the pre flair maneuver that begins about 2:40 here. It comes down on the steep trajectory so fast and doesn’t slam the brakes until that close to the ground-it does have the vertical tail pop-outs deploy for braking prior to the pre flair, but still. That has to be the diciest part of landing. Quite frankly though, I think it’s a piece of cake for any pilot good enough to be selected to fly the space shuttle. Most of them have been test pilots. I would think the X-15 had an even worse glide ratio than the shuttle.
The only thing with a worse glide angle than the Shuttle Orbiter might have been a TV set dropped from a high-rise window. Or maybe a pair of pliers...
Another gutsy manoeuvre in the flying brick. Never saw the night time re-entry from the ground before, impressive. You can see what Mach 20 looks like from the speed relative to the trail.
To this day, The Space Shuttles were THE MOST beautiful spacecraft ever made by man! Amazing just doesn't cut it when describing them! One of the worst decisions that our gooberment ever made was to mothball these wonderful craft!
@@pauledwards5573 Every space flight, from the first manned mission, to the Space Shuttles and beyond are ripe with danger and the possibility of death. That is the nature of doing something so radically different and amazing at the same time. If it were easy, and there was no danger involved, we'd all do it.
@@CarnorJast1138 I agree, too. Spaceflight pushes technology to the limit and the danger is immense. The danger is minimised, however, by everyone paying the closest attention to the details. @@Dad_Brad Black was good for radiating heat away. The tiles reflected around 90% of heat back into the atmosphere, whilst the interior of the tiles absorbed the remaining heat. That is the basic rule for the black shuttle tiles anyway.
@@Dad_Brad As for the white and black colour scheme, there is a basic science to it all, with the white on top reflecting heat away and the black on the bottom absorbing and radiating it away. Sure pretty colours would look visually appealing to some, but it's also highly impractical. That paint adds weight and cost and does not necessarily benefit the spacecraft flight. It would just look nice. The white colouring on the orbiters was not in fact paint, per say. It was layers of "blankets" which covered the upper portions of the orbiter. Paint weight and cost is the same reason why they stopped painting the external tank white, and just left it orange. Because it was unnecessarily heavy. Personally, I think the Space Shuttles' white and black colour was pretty iconic and does not take anything away from the beauty and grace that these orbiters had, especially when they were landing.

I miss this spacecraft so much.
Really was the equivalent of a model T tho,

Yeah but they were killing people. And the whole show was run by imbeciles!;

Nice. All it needed, right at the end, after the music, was someone saying, "Wheels stopped."
Nice video!
Welcome back home, Discovery.
" and for my next trick"
Observe that as the Shuttle slows down, many floating things like the cables on the astronaut suit fall down and start experiencing their weight.
Wanna know something? In entry they are quite far from Zero-G, that’s them holding the objects up. They’re pulling 5 G’s atleast.
I saw the space shuttle live once September 27th 1995 I think was the date What a thrill that was

How many people know that the space shuttles stopped flying in July 2011 and are now in museums!??
Literally everyone

bro literally no one knows that the space shuttle isnt even flying fo r more than a decade

I know this is sadly the truth.

Does anyone know what mission the footage is from?

@Explodingtnt30 which is exactly why they painted the SR 71 black?
@Explodingtnt30 also the heat tiles which get the hottest temperature on the space shuttle are as black as fuck.
