  • Our educational system is nearly 200 years old and has long been in need of a complete overhaul. The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and the transformational impact it is having, and will have, on our world is the catalyst we need to also transform the education system so that our students are better equipped to succeed in their world and the world of the future. Dr. Sarah Rubinson Levy has an undergraduate degree in business and sociology and holds a Master of Jewish Education degree from Hebrew College, a doctorate in education from Northeastern University, and certificates in Advanced Jewish Studies, Day School Education, and Jewish Educational Leadership. Her areas of focus include progressive/student-centered education, integration of artificial intelligence into education, and teacher professional development and support. She considers herself a scholar-practitioner, drawing from research and data to create effective and joyful learning environments. Most recently, she was a founding head of school for Einstein Academy, a progressive private school in Denver, CO. She currently empowers excellence in education through her work with Sarah Rubinson Consulting and Contracting with an approach that integrates empathy and curiosity, working with each organization in a way that is both realistic and aspirational. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Unfortunately, I have heard this same speech a hundred times. Basically, the school system is broken, but I do not have a real solution.
In my 20+ years in education, I have come to realize the education system is broken and will remain so until we, as a society, decide to be brutally honest about education. Here is the brutally truth “educators” need to honest about; teachers, especially HS teachers, are glorified babysitters. I have engaged in this topic hundreds of times during my education career. Educators “teach” kids for “Seven Cruel Hours”, so parents can participate in the US economy through work and upward mobile careers. We, as a society, lie to ourselves about our educational structure and educator lie to the public in order to maintain a career.
If the speaker really wanted to prepare young people for the future, this would entail a complete re-imagining of the role of education, the current curriculum and educational standards. AI is not an answer in itself, and neither is a student who can “think for themselves”, at least not within the context provided.

Parents, guardians are the first teachers. School which is structured in a factory or prison system is coming to an end. The future is for students who also contribute to the economy as they learn and grow. Learning must will mainly be at home. Future school attendance will be two or three days in a month, just to develop social and network skills. Otherwise schooling will be at home and work places.

I was unimpressed by the speaker and content. In a 15-minute video, less than 3 minutes were devoted to AI, which was supposedly the topic of the talk. (By the way, they don't teach cursive anymore to my knowledge.) The education system does need reimagining. I've been in education for over 30 years, including a B.S., M.S, and Ph.D. in education. I've heard this argument many times. Instead of complaining about the system, as this speaker does, propose alternatives. Education is changing slowly. It's moving from a lecture-based, teacher-centered model to a more student-centered model. That's where the thinking begins. It doesn't begin with a 13-minute diatribe. That's been done so many times and didn't work before. It won't work now.
