I’m glad I found your videos. I’ve been designing a rolling ball machine and want to use magnetic acceleration to provide speed that is faster than what’s available using just gravity. I got the idea from a Star Wars pinball machine that uses this technique and calls it the “hyper loop”. Have you investigated using more simple PNP inductive sensors to tigger the electro magnetic circuit?
An inductive sensor might be useful if the projectile was a permanent magnet, but it's kind of hard to detect the voltage spike from a ferromagnetic projectile passing by a coil. Unless you're talking about one of those metal detector sensor things like 3d printer heads have?
Yeah, a simple PNP Induction sensor will sense the metal ball and make the switch itself to provide the same voltage used as its source as the trigger output. You can buy inductive sensors that have various response speeds at 3K Hz or higher and at different sensing distances of less than a mm to 10 mm or more. They’re good because they will stay triggered (and provide a +V output) for as long as it senses the metal so you can easily have multiple balls traveling together in a row without fear of a misfire. The output of the PNP sensor would be connected directly to the base/gate resistor that switches the coil on. Just an idea.

I want to add an important note you forgot to mention: Adding a metal shell to the coil increases its inductance obviously, but less obviously also increases the coil's RL time constant. This isn't a huge issue for a single staged coilgun, but each additional coil you add will need to form/collapse a field more quickly to have an effect on the projectile. If your coil's time constant is too high, you'll lose efficiency as the slowly collapsing field puts additional drag on the projectile.
True, but overall i've found it to be a net positive in simulations and testing, because you're getting more magnetic flux for the same amount of input power. I think this is probably the reason you see high speed coil accelerators use progressively smaller coils, since there's a way smaller time window to act on the projectile as it gets faster, so the final stages need to have a lower inductance than the initial stages
Yeah! I'm in the middle of building a 1.5KJ four stage coil gun, and while each coil is the same, I could definitely improve the muzzle velocity if the later stages utilized smaller coils. If you're ever interested, I'd love to chat some time and compare notes, or perhaps even collaborate. I had never heard of FEMM before your video, so in this current project I made an excel program that simulates the field of the coils and their force on the projectile. It's been tediuous, but I've learned a ton. Needless to say though, Im stoked to see that there's an existing program for this.

I think it would be a really cool project which would be right up your alley. I modified one to fire plasma toroids on my channel, but they are capable of hypersonic velocities and very high electrokinetic efficiencies. You don't need all that crappy electronics, just put an iron core in every coil and give permanent DC voltage to it and build it like a Gaussian cannon out of permanent magnets. The plus side the magnets can't be destroyed by impact became they are just iron cores and no electronics because they are just permanently on as long as the switch is on.
You need to simulate using a axi-symetric model. You can do that in FEMM. FEMM is a great little program.

How did you tune for the optimum pulse duration, and the trigger-to-coil distance? Lot of power is hiding in getting that perfect, too.
