PLEASE NOTE - -I have not made an Addendum before for a video, its basically an additional follow up after a piece of work to explain inconsistencies, update information or expand the existing original work. This usually follows when any such problems were detected too late to correct the main work.
I can see that this could be a useful ongoing practice for me on any video, where perhaps questions or information in a video that I thought was clear turns out not to be, or perhaps one aspect is highlighted by viewers that warrants further discussion? Do you think this is a good idea? tell me below.

E: 'The warp will forever be a cancer in the heart of all humans.
The Imperium may last a hundred years, or a thousand, or ten thousand.
But it will fall, Diocletian. It will fall. The shining path is lost to us.
Now we rage against the dying of the light'
D: ‘My king, what now? What comes next?’
The Emperor turned away, walking into the darkness of the cavern
while the storm hammered the dead city so far above.
He spoke three words that no Custodian had ever
      heard Him speak before.
      E: ‘I don’t know.'

That Angeron quote gave me chills--I have been reading through the Horus Heresy novels (about to finish Fulgrim), so I've seen Angeron and his World Eaters in action a few times so far. Up until now, I have only seen him as a raging, blood-lusting maniac who is fueled by nothing more than bloodshed, but to get a look into his pained inner mind is sobering and tragic. The Emperor forced him to become what he is; I am realizing more and more that nobody is truly good or evil in 40k--it's all muddled shades of grey--and I think it's fascinating. Thank you for being the spark igniting my love for this intriguing universe, LT!

It is pretty clear to me: Chaos is fuelled by emotion, not beliefs or thoughts. i.e. just because you strongly believe in the concept of gravity doesn't mean a deity of gravity is formed. The emotions and feelings are the fire or the water; the associated intellectual thoughts and ideas are the colour of the flame or dye in the water. They mean nothing without the raw energy of emotion, only providing flavour to each emotional instance or circumstance.
Worship, actively calling out to personifications of emotion and supernatural deities thus doesn't fuel the gods; but it does get their attention. That is what the ignorance of the Imperial Truth tried to accomplish. A stopgap measure to reduce the chance of the gods being able to contact directly and influence humanity, and be actively invited into out universe; but doing nothing to check their power. Because it not our ideas and thoughts that needed to be tamed, but our emotions.
And despite the Emperor saying he wasn't a god and everyone should be secular, he essentially expected to be treated as one in his lifetime. No disagreement with his dictats is allowed under pain of death. Every single one of his decisions are made with little or no reasoning/explanation to his subjects, and with the expectation they will be obeyed absolutely. At Nikaea, when he banned the use of psykers in the Legions after hours of impassioned debate from all sides, he simply pronounced his decision to enforce a ban, censure Magnus, and left, with no explanation of his reasoning. He is as aloof and as unimpeachable as a god, and demands a similar level of obedience as the most draconian deity. Even before the Imperial Cult, the Emperor had cultivated the most fanatical and unquestioning personality cult ever. And what is unquestioning obedience, if not the very definition of faith?

An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”
He continued, “The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
    *********************************************************
The warp is much like this too. The Emperor was - in his insistence of destroying other faiths, not looking towards the well-being and happiness of his citizenry and plunging head-first into a bloody war of conquest - feeding the wrong wolves.
The proof of this is the Warp Entity attached to the Tau's "Greater Good", created by the emotions the Gue'vesas and other warp impacting species allied to the Tau. This Entity has
assisted Imperial forces in the past. Still too many questions as to the real motivations of this Entity, though this positive emotional focus is an important factor. It begs the question
of the Warp Entity that would have obviously coalesced around the worship of the Emperor. Is the Emperor and this Entity linked in any meaningful way? Does the continuing existence of the Emperor impact this Warp Shadow? Will the Immortal known as the Emperor of Man have to beat the Chaos Entity that has been built up by the Imperial Religion? Or was the Emperor *always* this Warp entity?

    • @nerysghemor5781
      @nerysghemor5781 5 років тому +35

Yep...exactly. Getting rid of the *misuse of religion* as opposed to *getting rid of religion* would have been the better way to go by far. Using religion as an excuse for cruelty? Censure such acts. Using religion as a reason to better the lives of people without prejudice? If only the gods of the warp had received so much more of this instead. Perhaps Tzeentch, for example, would have been no worse than Coyote. Or Slaanesh might have functioned more as the Greek Muses did rather than as a sadomasochist. More moderated, in other words. The reason the Primordial Truth was abhorrent was because we MADE it so and the Emperor fanned the flames into an utter inferno.

On the gods’ need for worship, the source you are probably looking for is the extract from magister Volans’s third letter to the Colleges of Magic (found in the fourth book of Liber Chaotica, chapter ”Arcane and Divine Magic”).
A summary for anyone not having access to Liber Chaotica:
The in-universe author is the Supreme Patriarch of the Colleges, so a guy who know knows his stuff but agrees that current knowledge of Chaos is still lacking.
“If all the gods and daemons are manifestations of the mortal world’s thoughts, dreams and feelings, then could this not explain why they react so readily to the faith of those who worship them? Could it be that some (or perhaps all) gods actually need the faith of mortals to maintain their unique identities, and so are drawn to particularly strong demonstrations of faith both to feed off and to do things that will encourage even greater levels of faith in the supplicant?”

I would say in the end belief is all that matters, the warp is a 4th dimension comprised of raw emotion energy, that energy is what shapes it's environment, hate anger fear rage will create a horrible place , "hell" if you would. If all warp sensitive creatures would have only allowed love peace tolerance and empathy to be the emotional response then the warp would most likely be a form of "heaven" or a beautiful perfect representation of those emotions. The one you feed is probably the best choice of words to describe this thing! Well done, and I appreciate the info

  • @AreEia
    @AreEia 5 років тому +37

While I do mostly agree , like 95%. I see the concept of faith a bit different in regards to the Warp. As in that faith seems to work more as a magnifier for core emotions/thoughts.
And thus it is a more powerful and more sustainable source of energy for the chaos gods/warp creatures.
What makes me think this is three things:
First is the great game itself wherein the battle more often than not is equably about denying the other gods power, as it is about taking it for yourself. And this more often than not takes the form of disrupting the other gods plans, amke them look weak compared to you, or simply making their worshippers uncertain that the are following the "right god".
Secondly I loook at the way that the chaos cultists devoted to a single god act.
As in they make themselves as best they can, avatars for a specific blend of emotions/thoughts and thusly proved better sustenance for their chosen god, while at the same time trying to not give sustenance to the other gods.
Thirdly I think about the fact that there have been warp enteties on atleast demigod/demon prince level of power, made from the focused belief, of at times just a single planet and or system/cult. This in itself should show that faith and belief is more potent than just random and unfocused emotions. Here I am pretty convinced that this was in some way how the Eldar made their gods, trough concetration, focus and **** tons of psycic power. And I think this works when viewing religon/worship as a mangifier.
I kind of look at it like the difference between light reflecting of a discoball(normal human with changing emotions/thoughts) and a laserpointer focused on one singular point/emotion.
The difference in energy would be quite large, and thusly it is the quality of sustenance that is different, the relaibility of it, and its duplicating effect(faith spreads, willingly or not) that is the real cause why the chaos gods are so enamoured by faith. But other than that I absolutely agree that "faith" as a seperate concept makes little to no sense both in universe and outside it.
But as in most things when it comes to 40k this is just my interpreation.
Great series on the emperor btw, without a doubt one of the more interesting takes on him I`ve heard, gg :)

    • @nekrataali
      @nekrataali 5 років тому +2

Yeah I think the concept of faith and worship of gods in 40k contributes to or magnifies a god's power. You give the perfect example of the Eldar gods, who are also the Ork gods. Some background: Khaine and the Laughing God are also Gork and Mork.
Both the Eldar and Orks were created by the Old Ones to fight the Necrontyr millennia ago, where each race was given psychic powers to hurt or outright kill Star Gods. Over time, the Orks have forgotten the origins of their gods as the brain boyz died out (Orks can't even remember which god is supposed to be which!), while the Eldar are too proud to acknowledge their shared history with such a barbarian race.
Either way, both gods seem to be emboldened by belief, stemming mostly from Orks (where things come true so long as Orks believe them to be true). The Laughing God especially seems to maintain power, as Chaos have been trying to kill the Great Harlequin since the fall of the Eldar.
Personally, I'm more and more inclined towards the Age of Sigmar hypothesis: the universe reincarnates itself under new types of physics with the champions of the old iteration becoming the gods of the new universe. We know the Age of Sigmar comes after Warhammer's End Times. I think Warhammer 40,000 is a previous version of the universe that existed before Warhammer Fantasy. 40k may even be the original universe, since it's where Slaanesh first became a god.
It seems the reason the Emperor can't destroy Chaos by destroying religion is because Chaos has likely been playing the Great Game for a very long time in a previous cycle. Khorne, Tzeench, and Nurgle have maintained their spots in the pantheon because they've been gods longer than the age of the universe. The Emperor is like a woodpecker trying to chop down an entire forest.
The other reason I can think of is that Chaos exists outside the Milky Way, whereas humanity hasn't even set foot on the majority of planets that inhabit the galaxy. Strikes me that if The Emperor had really wanted to weaken chaos, he would have striven for a more equitable and peaceful galaxy. Rage, jealousy, scheming, illness ultimately stem from an unmet need. Ironically by imposing his somewhat naive vision he is only making chaos stronger (if indeed it's feelings that feed chaos). Far from being the savior of mankind, he is it's doom. He himself is the ultimate god of chaos because he perpetuates the environment for them to thrive.

Funny thing about 40k, is that of course the Emperor is a horrible tyrant that in our universe wouldn't be ideal at all. The entire point is that these actions are only just barely acceptable because the 40k universe is *just that horrible*.
Another interesting point is that as revealed in The Buried Dagger, up until Magus broke through his webway project the Emperor thought the powers of chaos were sealed away. So maybe he was attempting to avoid humans turning *him* into a god.
Eldrad has also referenced that they were both aware of a greater threat to the galaxy than chaos, one that would require both humans and eldar to overcome.

I think if you look at the Emperor through the lens of Dune, on which he is largely based, admit he is a type of Kwisatz Haderach, his simetimes erratic behavior makes more sense. He isn't one man man but a multitude of people exsisting simultaneously within one consciousness. The personalities conflict with each other, with their different goals and ideologies, rising and falling in a never ending struggle to govern. This is also an easy meta solution to the Emperor being authored by multiple people with different personalities and goals for the character.

  • @jeandiekreef85
    @jeandiekreef85 2 роки тому

Thanks Luetin. I've watched your videos many times over, and still every time I find them interesting and have new thoughts about the subject matter.
In my view, I agree that the Emperor knew he couldn't destroy the chaos gods by removing faith. But he knew that removing faith leaves one less thing to worry about.
And the reason is that faith is an easy target for chaos to manipulate.
A devout religious person will have faith to their core, like you said. But chaos can easily, through suggestions and small influences, corrupt that person. They can slowly, over long periods of time alter the persons idea of what they should be doing to honor their god.
You find it today in religions, where people believe in the same god, but the way they serve that god differs. The difference are, for the most part, not an issue. As it is just different interpretations, and their acts are not wrong within the understanding of their religion. But you get the other, dangerous side of the coin. If you are not careful, you could move off the correct path.
**(I don't want to make this a religious debate, so bare with me on this)**
So, back to 40K. When the differences of your acts within your faith are driven by influences from chaos, you could end up with a person who still believes in his god, but his acts and associated emotions have been swayed over time into immoral or "dangerous" behaviour. Even though this person still believes to his core that he is serving his god, his acts and emotions are now completely different to what they should be, and are now fueling chaos, without the person realising this. And over time this person can be so consumed by the corruption, that he could turn completely to chaos.
    Basically a long, slippery slope.
So in the end, it is easier to take a religious person and corrupt their religion, than to try and take someone that doesn't believe in anything, that only relies on science and rational thinking, and turn them towards a faith, a corrupted faith.
But like you said, this didn't present a hurdle to chaos, they just stepped around this. And I think the emperor knew they would, but like I said in the beginning, he just wanted one less area to battle chaos in. And that area was the faith and religions of man that gets corrupted.
It is worth it though to ask the question, what is evil, and what are bad acts that fuels chaos? It doesn't take a corrupted, religious person to be evil.
Any person has the capasity to do good and evil, and chaos can be fed thru the acts of non-religious people as well.
Anyway, a bit of a ramble, but hope it makes sense.
This is a tricky subject, but I think you have summed it up perfectly. Thank you Luetin.
Keep the videos coming. They are amazing, and they really get my mind working and I find it refreshing to think of all these different scenarios and thoughts that different people have.
    🤘🏻

Nearly every single Space Marine or Imperial citizen that was manipulated by Chaos was someone who believed in something outside of The Imperial Truth. Also, I think when Chaos refers to The Emperor as Anathema, they are referring to the fact that he was capable of returning The Warp to its original benign form. I think you're skipping well over the very idea that the Chaos gods were created because of the way The Warp works. Sure, religion in 40k doesn't power The Warp gods directly, but the very idea of having concepts toward which emotions are focused is the very problem that causes Chaos. Even people with no religion target their emotions toward concepts. For the Eldar, sex, pleasure, suffering, and pain were concepts that their emotions were pointed toward, hence Slaanesh, but religion forces the concepts to exist whilst non-religion at least allows the possibility that the emotions are not conceptualized or focused toward archetypal concepts.
Regardless, great video as always, and I really enjoy your content! You do your research and I appreciate how eloquent and thought-out these videos are.

A lot of this hinges on if feelings and thoughts are somehow separate when it comes to the warp. In my opinion psykers are a prime example of why i think they are intrinsically linked.
A psyker of enough strength could shape the warp to do his bidding with his will alone. Yeah, they probably had a strong emotion to what they where doing to manifest it, but it was his thought that guided the power to the ends he wanted.
Of course 40k is pretty inconsistent on how psyker powers work, considering all the authors who have touched on the subject. I can see the warp and it's reason for existing might be as different as those who write stories and add to the cannon itself.

That’s exactly the sense I got, that humans (and the Eldari in the form of Slaanesh) birthed the gods by small reactions to an overall sense of disquiet in the warp. It’s only because humans are so quick to react to those negative emotions that a critical mass was able to develop.

The Emperor is the first, best example of humanity. All of it.
    Let me explain.
Big E, Empy-man here, is probably the ur-example of what humanity is. The greatness the being of humanity can become. The strength, the intellect, the will, the power and the good of humanity.
But humanity is not just the above. Humanity is brutal, ugly, animalistic, greedy, despotic, and evil. And The Emperor is indeed all of that, in a different point of view, bastardizing a common meme from another IP.
And that living corpse on that stolen eldar toilet is the ur-example of all of that. His chosen path of light is not inherently "good" or "evil" on that malformed, sliding, shortsighted and misplaced scale of human morality.
To be more accurate, he represent Order, versus Chaos. Why is he called The Anathema? Order is not inherently good or evil (using that misplaced human morality again), and Chaos is the same. It is, to us, easier to apply that morality easily and call Emperor good and Chaos evil because we're human and that's our frame of reference. He isnt good. Chaos isnt evil. He is Order to Chaos. I'll leave it at that.

    • @vaevictus4637

Certainly there's chaos undivided but it's way too eager to shoot itself in the foot, maybe that was his point.

    • @U9B

@@lloydgushHe wasn't tricked. The Emperor made the error in hubris where he thought he could play the great game better than the powers could and they mocked him by having him nearly killed, stuffed on a throne, and made into a God while the imperium plays the great game with Chaos. The game is the perpetuate ebb and flow of influence they wager against each other for fun and now the emperor is the 5th player. A God. Something he lied to everyone he wasn't. Logar must be laughing hysterically.
Chaos existed in the imperium but no where near the amount the enclaves had. The emperor forced cultist into hiding for the most part but it was the crusade that eventually brought them out upon Horus Heresy. Chaos undivided was a concept that truly didn't exist because the powers stop playing the game to play the game on the emperor instead proving they can unite. The emperor gambled on everything by never telling anyone but Malcador what he was up to. Who is he going to hide that information from? The powers can see and hear everything everywhere ever said anywhere at any time. They united to break the throne in the first place and made sure its key component and heir Magnus was unfit to take its place. They wanted it broken and the emperor perpetually on it keeping him out of the game as an active piece.
Thinking about it Magnus was the single most important person in the entire heresy.

loved your point on canon in relation with star wars. as someone who collected and read the entire star wars legends and canon book collections, i totally understand exactly your point. it can be frustrating at times to seperate the two or to relate tales that come between the two continuities. it can be even more difficult to reconcile some characters that appear in both continuities who in my mind are not the same person. such as a character like thrawn. disney has made him an art loving sevant with a love for the details and for standing up for the little guy. the legends thrawn is an art loving sociopathic psychopath who loves fascism and riddles while trying to slaughter a path to eradicate the new republic.
i was a warhammer fan as a kid before i was mature enough to understand the depth of the story and complexities of how it is put together. now i am going back and digging into the novels and i seriously appreciate your videos and the aid they have given me. in my star wars collection i have come to find that even though i love the legends novels above all else, that its ok to enjoy the content disney has put out too and that this is ok and does not spit in the face of what was built before disney. i look forward to all the discovery of the warhammer story as well

As a newcomer to the 40k universe trying to get some basic understanding before delving into the books, I very much appreciate your videos.
I have to chuckle hearing your comments about references. I have a masters degree in counterterrorism studies, and not a day went by on social media- not a DAY- that some idiot ordered me to “turn in my degree” (not a real thing, by the way) because the literal FOCUS OF MY THESIS contradicted some damn sound bite they heard on CNN between commercials for Alpha King male enhancement.
I finally said the hell with it and closed all my social media. Not to put too fine a point on it, but fukkem.
Thank you for your videos and the massive time they take. You have at least one very appreciative fan.

Nice to see an addendum video! You're absolutely right about people not using good sources. I've had to point out on other 40k channels the lack of sources. Tau sterilization of humans for example is never mentioned in any book or codex - only a game. But a lot of lore channels treat it as canon since it is repeated so often.

I thoroughly appreciate you making this video, accepting criticism and helping to add more richness to peoples understanding of such a vast and often times vague setting. Your transparency is a big part of why i started watching your content and stuff like this helps to loosen any sense of stringency on a platform where hardline view points can scare people away from following their curiosity. Lovely stuff. Keep it up please.

New to wh40k and watching these videos. Loving them so far. Also seems like the emperor just got played by chaos.
He did all of this to stop an apparent vision of the future only too provide chaos with a massive army, the likes of which the universe as never seen. Wouldn't be the only time chaos used visions of the future to manipulate a champion of man.
But that's just my not particularly informed guess. Great videos.

I remember a response from a Black Library representative many years ago at a seminar. He was asked about the changes/retcons/ignorance's of the lore when producing books and his response, which fits the way the Imperium works in 40k, - "All lore is canon, however not all lore is true"

This is my first time ever actually looking at the lore. It sounds to me The Emperor is a manifestation of mankind's desires and goals. The Emperor insists he is but a man and no more. The Godlike battle made mankind see him as divine. That weakened the emperor. The very thing he is afraid of. To be seen as divine
