- Highlights of Arsenal's win against Liverpool at Highbury in December 1990.
Going into the game Liverpool were champions, unbeaten in the league and 6 points clear at the top. A defensive line-up (although Arsenal also played a back 5), with top scorer Peter Beardsley not even on the bench, didn't work - and the aura of invincibility arguably never returned.

Vintage era of Arsenal. Both kits were quality.
It feels like this was the game where we were found out. Arsenal pulled our pants down and showed the rest of the league that we were no longer the unmovable force we had been for the last two decades. I think the other teams stopped fearing us and I cant remember many games after this where we didn't look rattled and shaky in defense for large portions of the game
No chance the first one crossed the line. The third was magic, Grobbelaar was beaten a bit easily though. Found this video after reading about the "strange side loaded with defensive players" that Kenny picked. Trying to work it out from this - back four of Nicol, Gillespie, Hysen, Ablett, with Venison on the right of midfield and Burrows on the left? Both full backs. Strange indeed.
Liverpool had beaten Spurs at White Hart Lane a month earlier 1-3 with a very similar team and formation, so I'm guessing that was the reason King Kenny went with the same formation at Highbury. Big mistake in hindsight though. We had just got battered 6-2 at Highbury to Utd 4 days earlier, and for the start of the Liverpool game, we were shellshocked. If Beardsley had played, and Liverpool had really gone at the Gunners, they would have caused us real problems. Instead, they let us get back some confidence in the early part of the game by playing such a defensive formation, and in the end, we won well.
