I bought my first set of probe masters after you mentioned them in one of your videos like 7 or 8 years ago, they are such great probes to pair with a good meter.

Well, at least you have your bench area back.
I have a quad - Claricon (yes, that's spelled correctly) that needs servicing. My youngest was playing it and some magic smoke escaped. Hopefully by this summer I can get to it.

👍 Thank you Tony. Thinking of building a quiet HEPA filter for the ceiling in my room. It would be good for your health also.

Glad you have the lab back, Tony. I too, was going through withdrawals! Nah, actually I really enjoyed those videos of you answering questions! I hope all that work you had done has made it warmer down there, perhaps?

I did purchase the same Attenuator. There is very little, in the way of a user manual/data sheet/testing (graph) reports, even on the manufacturer's website. Basically, the details you find on the sales listing is the only available information. I hope this 411 will save you the time and effort of looking for what does not exist. Having un-boxed mine, it looks fairly well made, with the exception that mine had one loose end-plate screw. I tightened it, but I am not sure that it was tapped all that well. Otherwise, I have not tried it, yet.

Thank you Tony for the information. If you want pink/white noise generator there is a app NAK T-100...20 bucks or something. It's a app for fine tuning a tape deck like speed, phase,wow/flutter, frequency sweep for bias adjustment 🙂

I've been using a Fluke 87 III for years now & agree.......just a solid, accurate, quick meter. Uses a 9v batt & doesn't really eat through them. My only gripe would be that the capacitance function just isn't that good. But I don't need it to be so I don't care.

Tony the remodeling dust is the gift that will keep on giving. Three or four furnace filters later, professionally cleaning all supply and return air ducts and when you least expect it, there it is, DUST! Just remember to add one extra spoon full of sugar to your coffee. That will make it easier to swallow and hide the flavor of the dust.
    Nice video, as always Tony.

I had a PL 4000 come through my lab once. I remember it had a lot of goofy features... Some of the card-edge connectors weren't making good contact so it was a fairly straightforward repair.

  • @ElektrikaCo

Hi Tony, to get rid of some of the dust you can put a high quality filter in your furnace and run a fan for a couple of days.

Agree with the instruments, except I would add the OWON 22025 scope that is battery power . I will add the Bcen 60 dB attenuator. This will work for me at this time. As always great talk!

Well, having 12 bits of resolution might be some nice-to-have. Also the enormous memory depth in some cases really is useful. But do you really *need* them? Nope. It would give me lower noise floor and higher resolution on low signals. OK. Yes, it may be helpful to have more bit-resolution, when it comes to FFT for spectrum analysis. But is that really needed for basic hobby repairshop?
For my case it is much more important to have the decoding options of my trusty Rigol DS1054 being spec'ed up to 100 MHz bandwidth and all decoding options for all kinds of serial communication lines. This way I can dig into function problems on communication busses, I have almost the same analog bandwidth as the newer 550$ model, I don't have touch-fingerprint-Display but physical switches and knobs, I have a scope, that still is compact, but it will not tip over when you touch it or change some settings on it. And it has built in power supply. And it boots up in about 20 seconds (as opposite to the new one, that takes about 1 minute before you can do anything on it, as you said).
So, is the new scope so much better than the old one? I doubt it.
Regarding your recommendations on the Fluke 87(V) I have to fully agree. It is by far not that much stuffed as for example my Gossen Metrahit Tech, it does not have banana sockets, that are automatically shut depending on Volts or Amps measurement, it does not have that sensitive Scales liek the Gossen, it does not have some bluetooth connection and what not. But it does have the most reliable, most satisfactionally and best working selection knob in the world of multimeters. It has one of the best-readable displays I know, it has short delay to display valid results, it has all functionality you need for basic repairs. If you really would need more accuracy, you will have some bench multimeter. But 99.9% could be done with the fluke.
And, for Bench Multimeters I would absolutely not hesitate to go for a used high-class brand, I do like the HP 3478A Multimeter, they are relatively affordable but after all the years still very, very accurate meters and do support 4-wire measurement for resistors. Comparing the readings of this HP Multimeter to my 7.5 digit Keithley 2700 there is no difference in significant digits inbetween them, so after all the HP is still spot on after 40 years or so.

One comment on function generators. Function generators are not the best option for precision audio distortion measurements. Function generators are native square wave generators that filter the square wave into a sine wave. That produces a sine wave with considerable distortion. Two good low cost options are the old HP tube unit and the Heathkit IG series. The Heathkit also has plenty of improvements you can make - look online.

The Rigol I showed in the video is not like what you are describing. It uses a synthesized 500MS/Sec 14bit circuit to generate the waveform. THD when delivering 1mW into the load is less than 0.1%, and way less than that when driving into a high impedance input.

I have the 2 channel version of the DHO scope and I love it. I just can't figure out if it can do fft/spectrum or not lol Edit: and now we got to that part, I'm gonna have to mess with it later.

    Hello Tony,
If is possible, could you use one time your Rigol DHO 814 when you make a repair, please.
I'm asking that just because I just received DHO 802, but is a little bit more complicated compared to the other ocilloscope witch I have (FINIRSI 1014D). Thanks a lot.

Tip for the meters: buy also a few of the very cheap Chinese meters. Some come for $10 or less. They work, they last, and you can blow one when you make a real mistake.

    • @erikdenhouter
      @erikdenhouter 4 дні тому

@@BrianG-x4u What floats your boat, if it works an you can rely on it to give almost the same numbers as an expensive meter, you have a tool that can do 90% of the hard work. For me I love the even cheaper stuff, I have good experience with the meters sold in DIY shops, for under $10, like the JCD DT-830B. That model is just a number, it is sold under numerous brands and versions and model numbers, but is in my experience a good basic product. The only basic thing it cannot do is AC current, but that is on average not much needed.

Hi Tony! Your final reveal was a bit underwhelming for me because since your Tek experience an so forth I was expecting a Tek Series 2 popping out of that case. Now this was because of your professional approach and business and selecting the two previous devices. Now this is to say nothing bad about the DHO814 of course since I have an 804 as a simple hobbyist. I do totally agree with your comments about the wealth of all functions. They are totally awesome. Anyway I dig your choice. I do hope you will make a video or two how to use this scope beyond the normal functions (e.g. testing THD)
I have added a WiFi option by adding a small USB dongle in the front USB slot, now I can have the touch screen on the computer and click everything you can use on the touch screen. I don't know your opinion regarding the noisy whining little fan, but I replaced it with a 90 mm Noctua fan than performs better for the cooling and I hardly notice the scope is on. I found the mod in an internet post and I'm super happy with it.
Anyway, thanks for your video and I'm looking forward to your next one.
