I feel like in a way the show only lasting 6 episodes makes it even funnier, like once the executives started seeing the finished products they immediately pulled the on the whole thing. Further adding to how delusional Garth and Dean are thinking that this is a good show. I think the main reason this show struggled to find an audience, is that this show is hard to pitch in a short amount of time, you have to explain not only the show, but the show with in the show. there really is no "elevator pitch" for this show so it makes recommending it a lot harder.
For anyone who hasn't heard it I noticed the full DVD commentary track for the 6 episodes was recently uploaded to youtube - ua-cam.com/video/_hKesZp1hmM/v-deo.html&pp=ygUqZ2FydGggbWFyZW5naGkncyBkYXJrcGxhY2UgZHZkIGNvbW1lbnRhcnkg
The content of Man to Man seems fine but the live audience breaks the illusion for me a bit, and I can't enjoy it quite as much. The idea that these people take themselves so seriously that they don't even realise an entire audience is in uproarious laughter at everything they say seems a bit too hard to believe, so having them in the same room feels wrong when compared with all the nuance in Darkplace's presentation. Great video though! I didn't realise Darkplace was such a phenomenon originally (I only ever really knew about the show, and only years later)
I love how there's a comment for every like on this video... bang up job, for a woman, WeeLin. Quite impressed you were able to keep your emotions out of your review 🥹🔪 lol Seriously, thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I remember when I was still serving in the military, there was a bunch of us who were big fans of Darkplace. One day, one of the English guys got on my bad side and then showed up later that day to give me a packet of shortbread, couldn't help but forgive him.
I can only imagine he was sporting ginger hair and no trousers at the time and said "Please, accept this shortbread" in a Garth Marenghi voice. Great username btw!
I'm not Jesus Christ. I accept that now. I suspect Darkplace was always going to be too darn visionary for the masses, sadly. Andrew did an excellent video on Darkplace recently, but no one does it like WeeLin. This video is worthy of an A from Harvard College Yale.
Yes, but I'm a woman - I hope that's not a problem! I didn't realise Andrew did a Darkplace video too, but thanks for letting me know - I do enjoy his Peep Show content.
One of the more outré dark comedies out there, in my view. A must-see one, though. I may have asked this before, but are there any plans to do an analysis of Jeremy Dyson's Funland? That's an odd bit of telly as well.
I haven't seen Funland yet, but I did watch Jeremy Dyson's Ghost Stories recently. He's such a great writer. Might be a review in that at some point too, we'll see!
Yeah! Shes back! :) Got to love Darkplace. I particularly enjoyed the little snippets of Garth reading bits from his books at the start of each episode.... "Maggots...Maggots...Maggots...Maggots...Maggots...Maggots...Maggots...all over the floor of the post office!"
Was just thinking about you and your content! So happy to see you cover one of my favorite twisted comedies. I think it captures all its actors at their most confusing best - I particularly love Alice Lowe and Matt Berry in Darkplace, they play their campy horror roles brilliantly.
They're both perfect - it's as if Alice and Matt were born to play those parts. I'm a big fan of campy horror and bad movies/TV in general, but it's rare to see it done as brilliantly as this. I do wonder if Darkplace would have got more attention if it had come out a bit later and been promoted through social media, but the fact that it came out during the earlier internet days just makes it that more special.
_" ... and woman, Liz Asher."_ Oh Hell, you nailed that! I had actually just rewatched "Hell Hath Fury" and then came across this in my recommendations, and that line made me laugh pretty hard. After all the other character's descriptions, "woman" really is the only thing to Liz's characterization (the only other term for her that I could think of would be "psychic woman," but even that just plays into the stereotype of "women's intuition.") [EDIT] _"Although I should point out that, unlike in Darkplace, we don't come with subtitles."_ And you leave me laughing out loud yet again. I just wanted to point it out because, although I find plenty of things on the Internet to be funny, they rarely ever make me _actually laugh out loud._ So congratulations and thank you; excellent job. 😁
Thanks! I think that's how Liz was actually credited in the DVD blurb (which tracks with Garth's attitudes and the whole "the one that's a girl" media trope of the 80s and 90s). As a Scot, I've seen my auto generated subtitles and those are... well, they're interesting sometimes! 🤣
Thanks - sorry I haven't uploaded in a while. But the new series of Inside No 9 starts this week, so you'll be hearing plenty from me for the foreseeable.

if anyone is interested Matthew Holness has a new book out by Garth Marenghi called TerrorTome and has been attending book signings in character as Garth Marenghi.
I remember the first time seeing Darkplace; I'd got home from my shitty part-time job one night and poked my head around the doorway to see what my mum was watching. For a good few minutes I genuinely thought it really was some shit old 80s movie or whatever -- it was only when it cut to one of the interview segments that things started falling into place, and from there it just got better and better. Twenty years later and I'm still giggling at brillianty-terrible lines such as "muscular and compact, like corned beef".

Lol great video! You really did your research. Cheers from Texas
i remember watching this when it first aired (GMD, not WeeLin !). It does take some getting used to but if you give it a chance it really grows on you
It does take a while to figure out what you're even watching... but once you do, it's mindblowing!
This is a well put together video
I'm a huge fan of the show. Watched it when it came out at uni. Great job of the summary video.
Thanks! I'm glad to see Garth back with a new book too.
A dark place....my place... your place...join us!.
I've watched this incredible show a bunch of times... and you've convinced me to watch it a bunch more! XD Great video
Just watched the new series of Inside No. 9. Just wow, another incredible episode. I hope you're planning some new videos to talk about it.
Tbh I thought it wasn't that good. It was less of the dark horror I've come to expect from no 9
I thought that about previous episodes and then they've grown on me. I instantly liked this one but I've been looking forward to it for a long time!
Plus I'm a hunt saboteur. Dianne Morgan's opening line of "Has anyone got a doc leaf, I've stung my fanny on a nettle." brought back so many memories!!!

Then wait no longer - first review's up now!
lovely overview
A masterclass in the fantastique.
"He seems incapable of writing any dialogue that sounds even remotely natural. Humans just don't talk the way this writer thinks they do." - so exactly like George Lucas then.
I bet Garth has strong opinions on sand.
If you look up the word 'Surreal' in the dictionary it just says Garth Marenghi's Darkplace.
Underneath, it says "see also, "The League of Gentlemen"

Extraordinary series
Everywhere I went it felt like they were watching me; fish-white flesh puckered by the Highland breeze; tight eyes peering out for fresh meat; screechy, booze-soaked voices hollering out for a taxi to take 'em halfway up the road to the next all-night watering hole. A shatter of glass; a round of applause; a sixteen-year-old mother of three vomiting in an open sewer, bairns looking on, chewing on potato cakes.
Just hook it to my veins.
"I know 'mon' means man, but I don't think 'och' means anything."
🤣
Never heard this before, thanks for your recommendation.
I feel like in a way the show only lasting 6 episodes makes it even funnier, like once the executives started seeing the finished products they immediately pulled the on the whole thing. Further adding to how delusional Garth and Dean are thinking that this is a good show.
I think the main reason this show struggled to find an audience, is that this show is hard to pitch in a short amount of time, you have to explain not only the show, but the show with in the show. there really is no "elevator pitch" for this show so it makes recommending it a lot harder.
well done
I didn't realise Darkplace was such a phenomenon originally (I only ever really knew about the show, and only years later)
love mighty boosh too... and you ever see look around you?
Thank god for the Peruvian market!
Much appreciate the F U to Nadine Dorries 😊
I love how there's a comment for every like on this video... bang up job, for a woman, WeeLin. Quite impressed you were able to keep your emotions out of your review 🥹🔪 lol
Seriously, thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for the kind comments! If you'd said anything mean, then I would have had to go and apply some more make-up.
Probably my all time favourite comedy series.
Mine too - definitely one of my most-watched of all time.
@@WeeLin Even apologised for the lack of salt
@@dungeonsanddobbers2683 Pure class
The only scenes not considered for slow motion were dialogue 🤣
Well, the episodes were running a bit short!
@@WeeLin
Up to eight minutes under.
If there's no supernatural forces at play here, how come Richard Ayoade looks not a day older over 20 years later? HMMMM???
Haha! Okay, so there MIGHT be some kind of witchcraft happening there. He really hasn't aged at all!
"Blood... blood... blood... and bits of sick!"
You sold it to me with richard ayoade and Matt berry. !!! Searching now lol
Yes! You're in for a treat.
Oh man I loved it!! Thank you or I teoducong me to another dark comedy :)
Amazing show. So underrated.
Couldn't agree more! I wish they'd been allowed to make more episodes.
Madeline was killed by Todd and Garth and dean buried her
If she got a burial - maybe she ended up in the Thames with the rest of the Darkplace footage?
_" ... and woman, Liz Asher."_
Oh Hell, you nailed that! I had actually just rewatched "Hell Hath Fury" and then came across this in my recommendations, and that line made me laugh pretty hard. After all the other character's descriptions, "woman" really is the only thing to Liz's characterization (the only other term for her that I could think of would be "psychic woman," but even that just plays into the stereotype of "women's intuition.")
[EDIT] _"Although I should point out that, unlike in Darkplace, we don't come with subtitles."_
And you leave me laughing out loud yet again.
I'm so glad to see that you're uploading again!
I've really missed your reviews
Thanks - sorry I haven't uploaded in a while. But the new series of Inside No 9 starts this week, so you'll be hearing plenty from me for the foreseeable.
Yes!!! One of my all-time favorites! So cool to see it reaching more ppl !
You excited for the new Inside number nine? Looking forward to ur coverage.
I'm VERY excited for the new series of Inside No 9. Bring it on!
New to your channel, caught it through inside number 9, but must say ireally love this review of dark place i loved it and still do and noone i know has heard of it or chose to give it a try so thank you also nice to hear a fellow Scottish accent online didn't even need the subtitles
In affection of Dean Learner, I never say goodbye until after a telephone conversation.
"We're doing all we can, but I'm not Jesus Christ. I've come to accept that now."
Scotch mist is the best episode the music at the end stand off is great!
Morricone score on bagpipes lol. Watched it last night 🌙
When someone asks me what I do for work, as often as appropriate I will tell them, then follow with “…though I prefer the term ‘Dream Weaver’”.
I'm going to have to start saying that!
I was the only person I knew who had even heard of this, let alone watched it (let alone got the DeanVD) but one day at work one of the lads made a comment about a colleague who hadn’t done something we’d needed from her - “she’s like a candle in the wind - unreliable” 😂
if anyone is interested Matthew Holness has a new book out by Garth Marenghi called TerrorTome and has been attending book signings in character as Garth Marenghi.
I was gutted that I missed him in Glasgow - apparently he handed out shortbread!
@WeeLin lol so I read yes. I wish i been there too.
“I’m a one track lover…”
Two IT crowd heads 👏
Great to see you back and am also glad youre looking at one of my favourites.
Thanks! It's easily one of my favourites too - I could watch this anytime!
"I know authors who use subtext and they're all cowards".
"If Won Ton finds out, my arse is grass, and he's got a lawnmower! Ya' dig?"
My favourite Won Ton quote!
@@WeeLin Personally, I always rather enjoyed the random shots of Dean Learner in a field with various weapons intercut into action sequences.
@@MedievalFolkDance Oh god, the funeral scene!

Very cool. I am rewatching Darkplace for the umpteenth time and gave this a watch. Great backstory and lore. Great research! I'll check the rest of your channel out.
