Other than a possible dead electrolytic you can look for a broken wire from the antenna to the circuit board or the variable cap. That could kill LW and BC both because the ferrite bar antenna could have shaken the wires loose when it was damaged. Sometimes if you plug the radio in and just let it run for a few days the electrolytics will reform but I would bet on the broken wire or dead electrolytic. Check for a broken trace on the circuit board also. That could cause this problem. If thats it then take a piece of wire and jumper it across the broken trace and it will work just fine once again. It will take some checking but its not too terrible. Good luck, it looks like a nice radio.

Try the shortwave band at night. The fact that it at least is picking up static means that the band is probably working -- but shortwave propagation is the strongest during the nighttime, so you might not get anything during the daytime.

vwestlife It turns out it gets excellent SW reception at night, particularly if I take it outside. Channels strong all over the dial. I do have to "firm-up" the antenna to a certain position with my hand to get it the best. I might put up an update to the video, probably in a "5 videos in 5 minutes" sometime.

@@DanOConnorTech I'd be very suspicious of that bank of pushbutton switches. They are usually daisy-chained, so if the first 2 work, but the rest are dead, there's a good chance that the problem is between the SW switch and the BC switch, which could be as simple as dirty contacts. I'd try hitting both switches with contact cleaner. It's got great sound and built quality for this type of radio, so good luck in keeping it in good order. The case can probably be re-glued and re-upholstered.

This radio was actually very good on FM. With the rod antenna extended fully, it consistently got FM stations at my home that no other FM radio in my home could receive!

I'd restore it. The 5 in the model number indicates near top of the line--1 as the cheapest, 6 as TOTL

WOW., what GREAT memories., THANKS.!!! 🙂My grandfather had bought me the EXACT same radio as a Birthday present in December 1964 (I was only 6 years old, and he knew my EXTREME interest in all-things-electronic), and although he wasn't supposed to, he told me it had cost about $70, which was quite expensive gift-item for the time, and had jealous siblings because of it 😞The speaker in that thing was the most beautiful / robust sounding speaker I had ever heard (just like the Grundig speakers of the 70s), and had it up until about 1978, when it was stolen from me, during a break-in at my parents house 😞 I also remember, how even with a set of 4 normal carbon-type "D" batteries (no such thing as Alkalines back then.!), it would run for MONTHS on a single set (depending on the volume setting of course), and was taken with me virtually ever place I went, so as to not only entertain myself, but more importantly, my friends also... :-) BTW: I also remember doing a few minor repairs to the internal electronics in the early 70s, as it slowly became a bit worn-by-use... Again, thanks for the memories.!! Regards, Eric PS: That carry-handle also had a "locking-system", so that if you tilted the handle back at about 45* down in the back, and push the handle towards the hinges, it would lock-in-place, so the the radio could be tilt back to not only project the sound up (from resting at a low spot. like the ground at a picnic), but would keep it safer fro falling over (front or back). Again, what an amazing piece of Germanic craftsmanship (the Dutch are just "kissing cousins" of the Krauts" ;-)

Dan, chances are that the AM/SW/LW problems are in the "front end" of the radio. Aside from the normal and obligatory "replacement of electrolytics", Philips was amongst the first to utilize FET's in their designs, and I'd betcha that there's an FET blown in the AM/SW/LW detector section (connecting an external antenna can sometimes be the culprit in their failure). A nice find, by the way!

I have one of these also. It belonged to my mother, who had it since new. My dad has an identical one, and they are the only 2 we have ever seen in this country. Please restore yours and let us know how it went!

Je viens de le recevoir, il est superbe.
La poignée tienne bien, mais elle se décroche, j'essaierai de la bidouiller.
Au fait ce sont les ressorts en acier, à l’intérieur des extrémités, qu'il va falloir 'rafrechir'

I was once given this radio which was in bad shape in 1972 (I was a youngster then), but my Dad fixed it, and I had several years of fine use with this radio. It only died for good a couple of years back.

Your dad sounds like "the man!" I would have gone through all of my paper route money on batteries! Thanks for watching.

My dad wasn't a professional radio repairman.
All he did was to reassemble the the radio by putting the electronic components inside one half of the "box" and screw together the two halves of the box.
