  • How can you expect to remember all the drum beats, fills, and exercises you learn? You can't. Unless you write them down. Here are some tips for keeping track of the knowledge you accumulate.

My brain happens to work just like yours, lol. I'm presently learning the frame drum, and the darbouka is already showing up in my not-so-far future. That's why I have started writing down what I learn too. It took me quite a while to figure out the "silent" parts of the beat pattern (4 beat times becoming 8, or even 16) and this video came right on spot ! Thank you for sharing.

Could you make a available pdf of that? Thanks :)

I’m learning the darbuka and the one thing i’m having trouble with it combining rhythms together for a Drum solo and figuring out embellishments. Do you have a video on that?

I'm learning too! :) Boy, when you hit a wall, it's sometimes tough to get over.

Hey Geoff, do you know of any websites to find rhythms (with variations)? I found some but they only include the most basic forms.

No, the one site I used to go to occasionally is no longer there. The best thing is probably just to listen to music, and when you hear something you like, figure it out and write it down.

Hi Geoff. I am learning darbuka, and I am curious on how a professional practices. What does a darbuka practice session look like for you? How long does it usually take and how often do you practice? If you ever get the time, would you mind making a video? Thank you so much for all of your very helpful videos!

Hey Ishmael. To tell you the truth, I don't really have a practice regimen these days. When I pick up the drum, I usually just noodle around and have fun, unless I'm learning a specific song. Or I practice songs with the band. Earlier on my drumming path, if I was trying to learn a new technique, what I would usually do is to invent exercises to use that technique in beats. So, if I wanted to get better at, say, pops, I would ask myself, "how can I incorporate pops into Maqsum?" And I would come up with a few variations on Maqsum that use pops. And then I would try with Ayoub, Malfouf, and any other rhythm I felt like playing. Other times, I would learn to play songs and play along. I would make a Word document for the song and write out the structure. So maybe it would be Saiidi 16x then Beledi 8x, etc.
I think the most important things are:
      1. Put in the time-lots of hours!
      2. Listen to your playing, especially the tone of your doum, tek, ka, etc.
      3. Learn from multiple teachers so you don't end up in someone else's narrow-minded idea of what's "right."
I'm not sure when I'll be able to make another video because I have to get surgery to remove a tumor from my finger. I sure hope it doesn't screw up my ability to drum!
