yep i had the same "grainy" problem with a sony tx7..better off getting panasonic..they don't disapoint !!!

What's happening with the sound when you use the zoom? Why is the quality getting worse? Probably to filter out the motor noise but that makes it unusable as a videocamera. You should consider the Panasonic ZS3 or ZS7.
