This is a traditional Scottish song about a Knight drinking with his wife in an inn. He cuts his hand with his sword and begins to bleed. They then decide to bury him quickly. This type of song would be referred to as a waulking song.

One thing that strikes me so much about Port Celtic besides how soothing, and beautiful every piece of music they touch is, is how truly beautiful all the women are. When they are singing you can see even more from the smiles and glow on their faces. You can tell how much they love what they are doing and it shows.
As usual when the wonderful Julie Fowlis is involved with such sublime singing and music you are GUARANTEED perfection and beauty. The blessed result of being true to your language, roots and culture. Just so gorgeous.

Can't understand Gaelic and only starting to relearn Gaeilge but her voice and the entire tone of this song sends out a pure sense of delight and glee when listening. A wonderful song.

This is my favorite version. The guitar mellows it and I can't imagine it without the fiddle. Gria has a good version with piano, too: they really build up the drama and poignancy of the story in that one. This is so haunting, though.

1990 I taken care of a lady she was 105 years old and she was from Ireland she was always so happy to see me cuz she used to talk Gaelic and she knew how to play the piano when I was in the nursing home that's where I work she would talk to nobody except to me it was an honor and she would be so happy she would talk to me in Gaelic I memorized say Mary you know I don't speak Gaelic she within say while I will teach you

I adore this song. I've been researching the background of it. The explanation seems very strange. The guy needs a bandaid and they're like " Nope, let's bury him...IMMEDIATELY" lol I feel like there's more context and meaning to this song than the sparse info I've found so far reveals.
Lovely though this rendition of the song is, the way they sing it means that you lose the sense that it's really a fun, nonsense song. My Gaelic isn't that great, but the translation seems like it was done my Google translate, or something, which is never very good. That's not to say that there couldn't be an older story - there's obviously a reference her to Fionn MacCumhail and his hound, Bran - popular stories in Gaelic culture.

I think you’re still lucky. My mother and grandmother wanted nothing to do with me as a child growing up. My mother was very abusive.
To have a mother or grandmother figure at that sing any lullaby to her child is a blessing.
I would wake from night terrors due to an undiagnosed cptsd as a child and wetting my bed.
My mother would punish me n ignore me.
Sleep was a scary time for me as a child.
Any comfort from a mother figure or grandmother figure for a child in any language is a blessing and lucky.

I am so fascinated with how similar the diction in the Gaelic language is to the Irish dialect of English. I hear the same similarities in the Scottish dialects.

If you ask 5 people, you'll get 5 very different answers, but from the US perspective, gaelige ("gay lick" or "gay ligguh" depending on region,) is Irish Gaelic. Gàidhlig ("gah lik" or "ka lik") is Scottish Gaelic. The Irish just call their gaelic "Irish". The Scots don't call their gaelic "Scots" because when they say "Scots" they mean Lowlands Scots which isn't a Celtic language but comes from Middle English and resembles Dutch.

Being a Celt, even one as distant from my original homeland as I am here in Appalachia, is a stirring feeling. I almost feel like I understand what they are saying...and the music I grew up with here in West Virginia is so very similar.
Regardless of the distance, or length of time, be it a day or generations, this music will bring you back, even if it is for a moment. Those that left took very little with them, their dreams, hopes and their music. I'm not surprised it had an influence on the music you grew up with in West Virginia.
@@CelticSongs some of it is virtually identical. The Ulster Irish created the Appalachian culture, and their influences can be seen in music and so many other things. Every other person I know it seems here have an Irish or Scottish surname, and most of the instruments we play are definitely of Celtic origin.

Same with me, though my ancestry is mostly Scottish. I feel the Celtic ancestry deep within me, and little bits of Celtic music, language, and culture stir my soul. My family roots trace to Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia, but ultimately back to Scotland. My wife has a lot of Irish ancestry, and she looks like it. I even learned to speak a tiny bit of Irish Gaelic because of my deep sense of Celtic heritage, and not being able to find out how to learn Scottish Gaelic. I love hearing the kinds of music performed here, especially in the old language.

These songs don't necessarily make a great deal of sense, but were mainly sung as a way of keeping the tempo while Waulking {softening} woolen cloth , such as tweed.
