  • The fastest particles ever detected in the universe are still a mystery to science.

    Cosmic rays are particles from space. The most energetic and fastest particles we’ve ever detected come from a mystery place. In this video inspired by the book, “We Have No Idea,” we investigate two mysteries where things fall from the sky.

    10-yr-old Dianna was so hopeful that the metal was a meteorite. Grown-up Dianna did some calculations. A 300g piece of metal, if it didn't burn up (which it definitely would) or melt in the atmosphere would still have about 50 sticks of dynamite worth of energy when it hit the ground. Foiled!

      Physics Girl OMG, we would've been extinct!!!😱😱😱

    • @ModMINI
      @ModMINI 7 років тому

      What did the metal look like?

    • @alecdacyczyn
      @alecdacyczyn 7 років тому +39

      It still could be a meteorite. It could be either what was left of a larger one that mostly burned up or a fragment of one that disintegrated. After dissipating the bulk of its kinetic energy in the upper atmosphere, a chunk of meteorite debris would fall to the ground at aerodynamic terminal velocity.
      Meteorite bits are found all the time on the surface which do not appear to have hit the ground with the energy of 50 sticks of dynamite.

      Could have fallen off a plane, could have been picked up by strong updrafts. Large birds like falcons and eagles sometimes grab things that look like animals and pick them up, only to realize it's not edible, and then they'll just drop them from the sky. A 1/2 pound of metal sounds about right for a large bird of prey to pick up and carry off.

    • @Ktulu789
      @Ktulu789 6 років тому

      Physics Girl I digress. Your father was a great addition to the video but the jokes were mildly silly and I felt like watching Discovery channel with it's crappy content nowadays... Amusing, but useless in the end.
      The video felt incomplete for a production of yours, the worst part was that there's no information about the app anywhere to be found...
      Crayfis.io
      So the argument is that you want to help solve this matter but end up leaving us on a bigger mistery where we don't have tools to help find clues about it?
      Constructive feedback: please add information on the app in the description of the video ;)
      For amusement I can go watch cat videos xD I don't want to sound rude but the jokes look immature and it's the first time I dislike one of your videos (that's alarming because when a channel starts going this way, it keeps going down).

    This is so sweet. I love it. Disclaimer: As a kid I collected all kinds of rocks. Some of them actually meteorites. Some turned out to be fossils. SCIENCE!

    Possible answer to the question of where do the super high energy particles come from: "astrophysical shock acceleration", or stochastic scattering back and forth across an astrophysical shock wave (such as from a supernova explosion). It's a reference frame thing, combined with statistics. Each time a particle is scattered upstream and then back downstream across a shock front, it picks up an increment of velocity/energy related to the difference in temperature between the heated (shocked) side and the ambient (unshocked) side. Rare particles scatter back and forth very many times and build up incredible energies. My master's thesis was a Monte Carlo simulation of astrophysical shock acceleration aimed at explaining the power-law spectrum of the high energy tail of the cosmic ray energy distribution, back in the 1980s. Somebody probably knows a lot more about this nowadays. Thanks for the blast from the past!

    What about that trick where you put a small ball on top of a large ball and drop them both. When they hit the ground, all the energy from the big ball is transferred to the small ball causing it to go flying off at a non-intuitive speed. Would that energy transfer concept work with particles?

    You get a gaussian distribution of energies from just about any source . These high energy particles are clearly at the high end which is why they are so rare. I suspect particles bumped up in energy near black holes. You get a log jam of sorts, everything can't make it into the hole faster than what's coming in behind so some of the stuff gets pushed up to high enough energy to escape and a few that get really bumbed up. Since the stuff is already orbiting near light speed near the event horizon that's quite a potent engine.
