  • King of Tokyo was one of the first gateway board games I ever got. To discover that it was created by Magic: The Gathering designer Richard Garfield but also feature an awesome Japanese Kaiju theme, there was something immensely appealing about a game that had you throwing big dice. Think of Yahtzee melded with Jurassic Park! The level of innovation when it game to pressing your luck and using the dice to gain the actions you wanted was part of such simple yet intuitive gameplay.
In this video, we see whether this top cooperative board game, King of Monster Island is better than King of Tokyo. Is it a beast of a board game?

    G'day friends!
What modern board game did you start playing when you entered the hobby or are you searching for your first board game right now? Leave a comment below.

We love King of Tokyo, so I look forward to King of Monster Island... That "train game" my wife discovered for one of our kids for Christmas 2014, which was of course Ticket to Ride. It launched me into modern board gaming... Shortly thereafter, I discovered The Dice Tower and then BGG, and the rest is history... King of Tokyo was probably the first or second game I bought after that... Fun review... Thanks!

Yes Ticket to Ride was one of my favourite early games as well! I am so glad we have had similar journeys into the board gaming hobby. Thanks for sharing!

My entry to modern boardgames was Catan and then Lords of Waterdeep. Lords of Waterdeep is still one of my favorites. I like King of Tokyo will have to try this new one

Thanks Danny - can’t wait to check this one out. I been playing the neon coloured king of tokyo dark edition lately and this new version looks just as rad!!

Yes this version feels like its own separate story and game!

This looks great. Will have to keep an eye out for a copy. We have enjoyed king of Tokyo so much and this looks like our jam. I think my first modern boardgame was Carcassonne but I didn't really get heavily into the hobby until Wil Wheaton's Tabletop started so the first game I got then was smallworld based off episode 1

oh my gosh. I loved Wil Wheaton's tabletop. Just the presentation of the games on that show just made them feel like so much fun.

Thanks Danny, great review! I love KoT and am looking forward to trying this latest iteration at our next game night 😊 (my first board game collection purchase was Cosmic encounter 😀)

Oh wow Cosmic Encounter. Ive heard great things about that game. Would you still recommend it?

@Board Game Sanctuary I would! It's great with 5-6 players, as it generates some great push and pull as players team up to defend invaded planets. I purchased the Incursion expansion as along with other alien races to play, it adds the rewards deck, which adds real benefits to players who ally with the defender. Worth a play!

My first modern board game was Carcassonne, proper predictable I expect lol.

Not necessarily so. A lot of people do opt for catan or ticket to ride!

The problem is that the game is all monsters vs a boss, in king of tokyo the most funny thing is to damage other monsters and have a lot of way to play your strategy using also expansions

hi Danny, thanks for the review, love it
unfortunately i've sold my dark edition KoT 😬,im not really liking it
only fun for awhile for me...anyway this game look fun to play, haha punishing and hard.
my first modern Board game was " Mysterium Park" 😛

    • @BoardGameSanctuary
      @BoardGameSanctuary  Рік тому +3

Hey! Thats okay. KOT is not for everyone.. also I can imagine after lots of plays its charm does wear off a bit. Its definitely a higher play count sorta game. I own Mysterium park, but have for some reason gravitated back towards the original game recently. :)
