I am very fortunate to have a park behind my house. My Golden Retvr and I walk every day. We go off the path and into the woods as well. I read that walking on uneven ground is great for maintaining one’s balance. At 74+, maintaining my balance is crucial. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us!
I’m so grateful I came across this video , but even more so for your comment. I’ll make it a point to do the same. Balance is incredibly important for seniors.
Be sure you carry a walking stick of some kind - the woods have hidden holes. I found mine in the woods - a great piece of hardwood that’ll probably still be in perfect shape when I’m long gone. I do avoid the woods (and walk on grassy park areas instead) when the Joro spiders come out. Their webs are hard to see. I’ve run into plenty of them but luckily the spiders run away when I breach their homes!
very true, I'm 51 and have been walking an hour and a half plus 100 pushups every day for the last 7 years, no sugar, no alcohol, no junk food at all, feel like 30 and have recently incorporated some of HTP's tips.
A most interesting recap on what us oldies have always thought about walking, Will explains the science behind exercises so well. These articles keep me motivated which becomes harder as we age. I am 85 and still doing back country skiing and hoping for a few years more. I am definitely sharing this article with my friends. Thank you Will Harlow.
I was walking my dog for an hour daily with discomfort. Lost 12 pounds slowly- then the hunger hormone hit and gained most of it back. Then found your channel. Your stretch and exercise recommendations are relieving my pain- so I can increase my steps. Now doing the hills daily. Will be adding ankle weight & ruck sack next. P.S. doing smooth terrain allows vision ahead, and less leaning forward. Thank you, Will.
So pleased to hear my videos have been able to help relieve your pain and restore your ability to keep walking - keep up the great work that you're doing :)
I really love your channel. I'm a 55 year-old lady from Germany having knee problems (after surgery). Your exercises help me a lot. And I love the way your present them.
I'm so pleased you find my channel useful - I hope my videos are able to offer you some support during your surgery recovery! Wishing you all the best :)
Thanks for your postings-very helpful. I have walked a lot up until Covid. Sat too much! So as I am 88 and have scoliosis now, I have found walking with sticks ( I’m using ski poles now but considered broom handles as well). First time trying poles, walked 2 miles! It felt wonderful, then snow came-winter, ice, etc. I can walk about 2-3 blocks without poles. I do a lot of your exercises, will buy your book, and am curious if anything new is available re: scoliosis? Thanks again!
I love walking outdoors and it has become a lifestyle over many years. I always stretch my legs and other joints first. Will has some great vids about stretching for over 50's like me. Other benefits are better sleep patterns, Vitamin D from sunlight and lots of fresh air. I dont long walk everyday, but that may suit some people. I vary between long and short walks each week.
I walk my dog twice a day. But it’s all the exercise I am doing. I have degenerated lumbar discs (seen the xray) I find wearing a ruck sack actually helps keep my back straighter such as when I shop. rather than carrying bags. I also had a ventral hernia which I recently had operated on which may have led to the core weakness which led to the glute weakness and maybe the spine weakness and trochanteric pain. I was exercising adductors to get over that which thanks to you and other physios on UA-cam is completely better now. I’m 10kg overweight. I’m 65, 5ft 1in (used to be 5ft 3in) and 68kg and a woman so post menopausal. Wish I’d done more exercising throughout my life but you’d think that being busy with raising 3 children would be enough. It isn’t coz that was a lot of bending, folding and cooking. Exercise is key.
Please talk about weightlifting for people over 50. What is the minimum amount of exercise that will prevent sarcopenia? What muscles should one focus on, and what muscles can one ignore?
I'd say a once a week full body workout should be enough. If you do Squats, deadlines or something similar you've covered almost every muscle but I'd include pull ups, some stomach and / or core excersises, facepulls and arm exercises are important. Most importantly do what you capable of and avoid injury.
You don't need to get to failure with weights. I'm over 50 and I do weight based strength training 4x per week. You can build up to more time per week. This channel will help you find good exercises to do.
@billbauer9795 I lift weight that I can do about 12-15 reps with and I'll do that to about 10-12 reps. I do a lot of exercise that requires movement and I lay out about 4 exercises and do 5 sets with not much rest in between. For example 1.pick up weighted ball throw down, repeat 2.push ups, 3. Dumbell squats, not super heavy, 4. Dumbells lift overhead and walk for about 30 seconds, 5. Carry dumbells by my side for about 30 seconds. Rest, drink water and repeat 5 times. Then I do two other rotating sets of different types of exercises. This usually takes me an hour and a half. I used to work out for 45 minutes with less types of exercises but I built up to where an hour and a half does not make me exhausted for the rest of the day. I'm happy to answer additional questions or fill in more details if you have questions.
Thanks Will for another fantastic video. After watching one of your videos on walking poles I bought those and started walking with the poles. Before I always used to strain my right shin for some reason. The walking poles have been the game changer for me. No more knee or shin pain. Thanks again for all these walking tips. Stay blessed❤

Thank you so much for providing this channel! You have no idea how helpful its been! Here's a question though. I have arthritis in my L4L5 and L5S1 facets which, in the L4L5, has caused a synovial cyst. Now, I had that removed but a residual cyst has remained and a recent mri showed fluid there and in the corresponding facet. Excellent video Will. And thanks for exploding the myth that walking will wear out your cartilage. I subscribed to that myth. I'm now going to start a routine.
Always enjoy your videos. I was walking 10,000 steps a day plus walking up & down 60 staircases a day. I had 3 compression fractures and it’s been an up & down journey for the last 3+ years. I’ll build back up to 5,000 steps a day and then get some kind of set back and have to start all over again. Now I’m having trouble actually walking correctly. I tend to drag my left leg/foot from nerve damage. It’s not drop foot. I have to concentrate very hard with every step to actually be sure I’m picking up the left foot and leading with my heel as step forward Definitely a work in process, but you’ve helped a lot which I appreciate. I will get back to where I was. I love walking and most any exercise at 73 yrs old, I’ll never give up. Thanks again!
I'm sorry to hear about your fractures and the impact they've had on your walking - I'm pleased my videos have been able to offer some guidance during this period of recovery - keep up the great work and I'm wishing you all the very best :)

Thankyou for reminding us why walking is so important. I will be 85 and always had a dog that gets me out and about several times a day. Your advise from your book is excellent. I like the idea of overload by putting some weights in my backpack and also some uphill walking.
I'm 68 and love walking and hiking - but recently have started jogging as you seem to get more bang for your buck with running; fortunately as I am fit my first run was 2.9km a week or so back, and I think I can get up to 5km within the next week or so.
I have a new knee and a new hip and I’m waiting for another new knee (result of 30 years as an outdoor instructor), so used to walking up and down hills for years. Walking now though is very painful. How do I continue my daily walking but in less pain?
Before I got my dog 5 years ago I honestly was unfit and chunky.. It was hard work at 1st but over time my fitness improved I lost weight I could breath better my life had changed and has changed..Last August I added strength training to my life and also I've just started running this week properly running I couldn't do that last year my body wouldn't let me it's taken a good few months I ran 3 miles on Monday real easy though..im in no rush..also from watching your videos you have also opened my life I want to thank you for that.. Oh gosh I absolutely HATE walking. I’ve tried the buddy system, watching tv on a treadmill, marching around the house, etc. I hate it! I am car free but have to admit I hate walking when i can cycle, though I try to work in taking the (12 flights of) stairs to my apartment every few days. SO my question is… what equivalency is there with cycling in terms of the benefits you've listed?
Thank you wills im walking 7000 steps every other day I do feel betteri would like to do 10,000 steps but I gets pain in my bum, like sciatica I have to stop I need to loos waight to is it enough
I was walking a lot till 2 years ago when I was diagnosed with DDD (degenerative disks).. I can still walk 3/4k steps most days but I wonder will cycling be as beneficial.. I don’t experience much pain cycling..
I used to love walking unfortunately I fell down an escalator the first of December fractured one side of the ankle and broke the other side. And two rods and 13 screws and they have healed well. Unfortunately when I had the second X-ray unknowingly she pushed my right leg too far now my right knee has turned inwards . This week i had another X-ray and they found out there is a fracture on the right side of my knee . I am also under a physiotherapist she has not seen anything like this before that she has given me some exercises to do. Sorry for the long text.
I'm gonna 80 this year. I can walk only 2000 -3000 steps or so before I feel hurt on my spine because I have a little bit scslliosis and a little bit of osteoporosis. So what is your suggestion, actually I like walking. I used to hit the gym before 2019.
Hi Will, I hope you can offer me an opinion. I increased my walking substantially while on vacation and began to experience sharp pains in the ball of my foot radiating into the top of my foot of my middle toes. I also had swelling in my feet and ankles while I was walking. The swelling went away but the pain has not. I've seen a doctor and it's not broken, but no one knows what's wrong. Any thoughts or suggestions?
I’m disabled and unable to walk much at all. Just a few feet with an aid. Is there a way to do an equivalent exercise seated? Sounds stupid but I want to do my best.
I m 65 but healthy n looks like 50 n weight is 60 n 5ft 6 inches.i had frozen shoulder n strengthening excercise cured it.i need exercises for me in the pool for strengthening muscles of calf glutes etc I don't know swimming but I can float n I sit deep with hands bck sometimes
Didn't you say sit to stand? And going down steps slowly is most important to avoid falls? I guess you're not going anywhere when you stand if you can't walk, so I'm going to call it the top three. I think getting up from the floor is crucial too. What if you injured one leg or arm in a fall? 😮 Then it may not be so easy to get up. A new horror to worry about.
It must but it's challenging, I hate hiking, hubby lives by it so I tag along to hang by open car door but I'd read a good idea/way to strengthen ankles it to put your weight on inside of your foot rotating later to putting your weight on outside, good luck!

Absolutely! There's a great social benefit to walking which makes it a fantastic activity to take part in :)
I walk every day and would highly recommend trekking poles to everyone regardless of fitness level.
No, those poles actually degrade your balance...instead of the body working to keep itself balanced, it starts to rely on those poles. Don't use them.

I am car free but have to admit I hate walking when i can cycle, though I try to work in taking the (12 flights of) stairs to my apartment every few days. SO my question is… what equivalency is there with cycling in terms of the benefits you've listed?

I hope my video was able to offer some motivation! Keep up the great work :)
Ends up I had a stress fracture in my foot!
Thank you, yes obvious but sometimes we need reminding and encouraging (and a little bit of a push!) 👍 💪 🤗
Absolutely, a bit of encouragement is key!
I'm 73 years old and been walking 7 km a day and riding bike for at least 10 km every Sunday. Thanks
Keep up the great work :)
I’m disabled and unable to walk much at all. Just a few feet with an aid. Is there a way to do an equivalent exercise seated? Sounds stupid but I want to do my best.

Walking speed corresponds with longevity. The fastest walkers at age 50 live the longest.
Most important is pushing away from yummy 😋 unhealthy junk foods, Happy Good Friday everyone 🐥🐤👯
My favolite 👍🥰
Thank you!
Why Will speak so easy to comprehend English
While all local uk residents speak English
Mostly that you can't even guess 😢
Didn't you say sit to stand? And going down steps slowly is most important to avoid falls? I guess you're not going anywhere when you stand if you can't walk, so I'm going to call it the top three. I think getting up from the floor is crucial too. What if you injured one leg or arm in a fall? 😮 Then it may not be so easy to get up. A new horror to worry about.
how about easy jogging? It seems more fun for me (age 66)
Thanks for your help keeping me younger!!
That's great to hear!
I did 6 miles of walking today with 10 pound backpack. Difficult but double. A lot of stops and water breaks. I am 56. Thanks for your programs!
Keep up the great work!
Does walking on uneven ground help with strength for balance ?
It must but it's challenging, I hate hiking, hubby lives by it so I tag along to hang by open car door but I'd read a good idea/way to strengthen ankles it to put your weight on inside of your foot rotating later to putting your weight on outside, good luck!
Walking 11,500 steps a day. 5-6 miles.
Keep up the great work :)
