  • As always, thanks for visiting, this time we are looking at a beautiful Krell KAV-300cd compact disc player in my second #Krellmonth piece. This lovely CD player came in for repair and I completed a fairly substantial overhaul/restoration on her in the end.
    As always, please excuse the one-take, zero editing, 'leave the goofs in' approach, it's the only way I can actually get videos out at the moment due to workload!

    Absolutely great stuff.. Replacing caps with ELNA Audio Grade caps or Nichicon are by far the finest Capacitor brands out their. My 14 year old Marantz SA-15S1 CD/SACD Player is absolutely loaded to the teeth with ELNA Audio Grade caps and that's why is still going strong all these years later. My beloved Denon AV-4803 AMP also 13 years old is loaded with both ELNA Audio Grade caps & Nichicon caps. 🤓👍

    Thoroughly enjoy watching your refurb clips, watching equipment reviews pale in comparison. The internals of this player make my YBA CD100 look sparse in comparison! I’ve been mulling over buying a Krell integrated online but reluctant when you can’t see and hear what you’re buying in the flesh.. and in my mind at least I can’t imagine couriers taking too much notice of ‘FRAGILE CONTENTS’ stamped all over the carton. Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Tony, thanks and yes the courier factor is one that must be seriously considered. I use fully insured shipping via Pack and Send for all my business freight. That way if anything happens, its covered!

    Good video. The U7 and U8 mounted at the bottom psu board is probably relocated there to make sure they thermally track well and not change temps due to convection. I remember (probably it was) the Naim NAP200 with two transistors mounted at the bottom of the board where the air is still and would stay at their operating temperature.

      That sounds more positive, likely a mechanical issue, deep service needed.

    I have one KAV-300cd has the same issue which happened yesterday. What was the main problem for it? Did you replace power transistor of power supply board?

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  Місяць тому

      I've worked on many of these so I don't recall the exact details with this one without looking at my database/invoices. With anything like this, I recommend a visit to your local specialist. Parts should not be replaced unless they need to be, determined via testing.

    Find it interesting that Krell uses MPSA92 for audio output. Because as I understand that'a a high voltage switching transistor. I know this device, because I've used them as the display drivers in a nixie tube clock I built a while back. I've also seen MPSA92 been used for line switching and pulse dialing in telecommunications equiment, again for switching high voltages. So it's not really the first device I'd think of for HiFi audio signal uses.

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  2 роки тому +1

      Great comment, interestingly MPSA92/42 are used in a lot of really great hi-fi gear, Krell, Levinson, Perreaux and many more. Really robust devices, high voltage as you note, great parts, I keep a ton in stock for this reason.

    Great video. Did you test those tantalum caps on the DAC board? I find lots of out of spec tants when working on old kit like this. In some cases it's best to replace with non tants, just have to be careful not to put too low an ESR part on some regulators as they don't like it.👍

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  3 роки тому

      Hi Ian, yes I tested these tants and they were all good. I prefer to replace them with tants, where needed, tants have generally superior HF ESR and were originally selected for this reason in many applications as opposed to the high C/V which many assume is the reason.

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  Рік тому

      In most cases, I'd suggest visiting a specialist repairer for an accurate diagnosis and repair. Every case is unique and I would need to inspect and test your unit to diagnose the issue/s and determine the work needed to rectify them.

    What is the best krell series 🤔 to you?

    • @LiquidAudio

      I really like the early KSA amplifier series, fan and convection cooled. I also really like the PAM preamplifiers, just beautiful.
