Idol term originated from Japan but nowadays Korean idols are representing it more worldwide.
In Korea, idols are often part of meticulously trained groups, debuting under entertainment agencies that invest heavily in their training in singing, dancing, and public appearance. K-pop idols are expected to perform at a high level, with polished choreography and strong vocal abilities. They are also marketed based on their visuals and personalities, engaging with fans via social media, fan meetings, and variety shows. Korean idol culture emphasizes teamwork, performance perfection, and strong fan engagement.
BTS started as hiphop group so they were not exactly typical idols. Some people used this term to belittle them. In this song they say, you can call me idol or artists or whatever you want. We love our music, we love our fans, we love what we do regardless of what you label us as.
Sorry my English is not quite well but i tried my best to explain. Hope it's helpful 💜

This MV was basically an answer to some of the criticism... 'you use too much greenscreen (which they never have)'... so they used soooo much in this one just because they can... the shark will always be one of my personal favourites.... RM uses too many filters on his lives (which Army loved... so he can use as many as he likes.... ), Too western , so they used a ton of multi cultural references including the scenes wearing Hanbok.. Too colourful... well cop this !! There's an explanation vid that is helpful to point out everything but hopefully you get the gist.... It wasn't just a load of 'colour' put together without reason... BTS never do anything that isn't intentional.....

‘Idol’ was released in August 2018. It’s on the ‘Love Yourself: Answer’ album.💜🥳

In Western culture a "pop idol" means something like a superstar who is greatly admired by fans. However, in East Asia "idol" simply means typically "a male or a female person who performs in an all-boy or all-girl musical groups" or as a solo artist.

    I'll give you 2 recommendations.
    1) IDOL explained by a Korean - from DKDKTV. There are a lot of cultural references in this song that you can't understand like the Bunny in the Moon and this video helps a lot.
    2) IDOL 2018 MMA performance - you will love this one.
There are some BTS songs that you definitely need explained videos for and the 2 channels that are high on the list for that are DKDKTV and Bookish Theories. DKDKTV will give you the Korean cultural understanding that is required for some of their sayings or phrases in such songs as 'Bapsae', 'Dope' and so on. Bookish Theories is good for the literature and artistic understanding of other songs like 'Blood, Sweat and Tears' for instance.

These are intentional. Just like @JoSedunary.. I’d like to add: V was criticized for dressing like an “old man” just because he likes that clean old fashion style, that’s why he’s in a button up shirt, suspenders and glasses. Jin having ugly knees so his pants are cut revealing them. J-Hope for being too skinny and lanky so he’s dancing with the inflatable stick figure balloon thingy (forgive me, I don’t know what they’re called) wearing a bugs bunny sweater. Suga for being too pale so he’s wearing a Snow White sweater. Jimin being too feminine so he dances with a traditional fan for females. If anyone wants to add anything, please do. Or kindly correct me. We don’t want/need negativity on JahJahHenny’s channel. Borahae, y’all! 🫰🏻💜

It was a time when filters on posts were very fashionable.
They are like chameleons in this video.
It's a response to those who attacked them, and exaggerated Korean cultural elements, to make it clear that they are world stars, but still Korean.
No element in the video is haphazard. Everything has meaning.
It's worth watching the video explanation, by a Korean (it's in English):

The Idol done for Jimmy Fallon during covid, at night in front of a palace, has such a different feel. Worth the watch but it might be hard to get past copyright for reacting.

Brazilian here! Nowadays, no, we don't have boybands, it's mostly solo artists, but in the past yeah, totally. Imo the most know band was a girlgroup though, Rouge.
