    • @taylorhirschmusic
      @taylorhirschmusic 2 роки тому +39

      @@LavaAndDiamond Well yeah, they're not getting those sample sounds by rubbing twigs together, but what my man obviously meant was that they are able to actually perform these advanced tunes without getting distracted by the complicated rhythms or the fantastic layering and blending of otherworldly sounds together. Most people couldn't compose this through a DAW, while these guys are playing it live like it's no big deal. Pretty impressive.

    • @xtan150
      @xtan150 2 роки тому +8

      @@taylorhirschmusic You can see they're running a single backing track on Adam's laptop using ableton live. It's likely the tune was composed electronically, which would allow them to dial in complex polyrhythms, and later just learn the parts, record them using live instruments, and then drop these specific tracks out for performances to play on top of the backing track. It's a cool tune in its own rite, but IMO such a reliance on a single backing track defining the character of the performance flies in the face of the virtuosity clearly prized by these musicians.

    • @taylorhirschmusic
      @taylorhirschmusic 2 роки тому +1

      @@xtan150 Yeah I caught the Ableton track as well, the only thing is that we don't actually know which sounds are and aren't curated specifically into that track vs samples that are generated using effects gear, or pads the drummer hits that then carry out their own pre-programmed roles, or anything else that would require temporal awareness to use live. Sprinkle that in with the skillful lines and layered polyrhythms and it can become difficult to keep track of everything as you're playing.
      I think Adam might have released a video a while ago on the debate between using programmed material vs au natural. You might enjoy that, it seems like it might be right up your alley!

    "Threshold" is the most gloriously strange song I have ever heard. My brain literally doesn't know what to do with it. How to groove. Yet why do I find myself rocking in 6/8? WEIRD.

    • @braden_m
      @braden_m 2 роки тому +5

      Me too!!! I just like naturally account for that last sliver of a beat somehow and it’s not strange. It’s so cool that weird time signatures like this can groove - like it doesn’t have to be some weird only theoretical thing cuz IT WORKS

    • @iau
      @iau 2 роки тому +11

      In many cultures, music is not subdivided in equally spaced beats, but the beats are "flexible" and follow some pattern like "long-long-short".
      In this case, the 19-tuplets are subdivided as 6-6-7, so it feels like some kind of "short-short-long" pattern. And it's only natural for us to groove on it 🙂
