"Some say that pirates steal, and should be feared and hated. I say that we're victims of bad press it's all exaggerated"
I mean, when you think about it, both are true. At the end of the day, pirates of the golden age of piracy were thieves and criminals. _But_ most were relatively respectable despite being thieves and criminals. Most pirates only stole what they needed to survive on the high seas, plus a bit of extra pocket change. Food (especially citrus fruit) and medications were prioritized over even gemstones and gold, crews often had codes of conduct they had to follow, many of which actually banned a lot of the more heinous crimes that pirates were often accused of, and many crews democratically elected their officers. And when raiding ships, pirates would give a target plenty of chances to surrender before declaring no quarter, and if a ship surrendered, they'd simply board, take what they needed, ask the targeted ship's crew if anyone wanted to join them, and then leave. They'd only actually kill a ship's crew if that ship refused to surrender and no quarter had been declared.
So, yeah. Pirates during the golden age of piracy may have been criminals, but they were just about the nicest criminals you could ever meet. Though, they did also see the value in maintaining a reputation of being "fearsome but merciful" as a way to get ships crews to be more willing to surrender, so they wouldn't have wanted people going around saying that.
BRAVA! 👏
