Hendrickson is a great suspention. At work we have a mechanic that can change out a mono spring on our dump chassis in 15 min. They are all tri axles. Good work sir.
In the '70s our company truck needed that job done. The local spring company MADE the new spring and had the truck back to us same day. A lot of work, great job and price VERY reasonable.
My first time watching, I drove for years and only saw spring work done as straight up bull work. That use of the Hoyer lift is pure genius. I would never have thought a Hoyer was capable of lifting a full stack of leaves in and out of a truck before but some patients turn 600 easily. Subbed and hooked all in one fell swoop. Mike.
I done a few of those back in the day, I look back at where I went off in to working, the trucks were always the best work. heavy duty work, it was good work.
This small compared to those spring we used to replace. 1968 KW Dart 150 tons dump trucks in mining equipment. It takes a Fork lift to lift the spring and use 1" impact wrenches to loosen the bolts.
These were a lot of fun to work on if the shop had all the proper tools and a heavy enough press. Don’t have the right tools, these and Mack “Camel Backs” were a bull work in progress!
Good job, only thing I would add is that half inch impact gun is not nearly strong enough to tighten up neither the big retainer bolts on the spring nor the wheel lug nuts.
@@ralphphillips6422 I think both were used, but to me, it really looked like half inch was used to tighten up the nuts. Besides that, never was a torque wrench used, and the lug nuts required some five hundred foot lbs. torque. Just saying.
Thanks for watching and commenting!! I used 1/2", 3/4", and a 1" impact wrench on this job. Keep in mind these videos are edited for time and not every single step is shown.
This style suspension used to be a lot more popular. By failing to crack test the walking beam when doing a major service like this, you are leaving the vehicle in danger of turnover if the beam fails in a bad place. And yes this has happened more than once.
It was the only one I ever saw, but the beam was broke just behind the front bushing and the beam had torn up a strip of blacktop before the truck rolled.
@@donmunro144 I just can't see how that could happen, the rearmost wheel would have to be 7 inches in the air to get the front of the beam anywhere near the pavement. And if it broke behind the bushing it wouldn't even be long enough to touch the ground unless the tires were flat.
If your replacing the bolts why wouldn't you just torch them off? I have a hard time putting that stuff back together that dirty. I'd send the stuff out to be blasted and painted.
What’s up with the big gobs of grease on the bolts? In automotive, we avoid lubricants on threads to prevent over torquing. I realize this isn’t automotive, but the purpose of a fastener is the same in both fields.
I was always taught to use lube on treads to prevent under torturing! Many manuals will specify where to use lube on the faster when torturing to get proper bolt stretch. This man obviously has never read the Hendrickson manual because he would know that with that air wrench he way over torqued them. Plus he just destroyed the saddle by torquing the bolts before torturing down the end caps. The ears of the saddle are now warped and spread way the fk out!
So this stack of springs is holding up the load on 2 dual wheels so it makes you wonder why in Pakistan they use a stack like this plus a much larger stack under that. It is the reason why they are breaking their trucks.
Tenho um caminhão aqui no Brasil com essa suspensão, mas eu não encontrei outro igual assim traçado com esse sistema. Os traçado aqui são todos diferentes.
I'd say use a damn heel bar to line up your spring pin after you've got it close bud, bolts are not made to locate ,by hammering and then running a nut over f ed up threads
how many drivers do clean underbody and frame with hot water and steam jet each after winter season? How many mechanics use wood thicknesses when hammering a pin? I think the people born after the nineties don’t know a blessed fucking thing

Hello from Australia, I am a retired truck mechanic and it is good to see the job done properly with lubricated threads and all. Well done five stars.

I’m missing lube on the pivot axle on the beam connecting the two axles.
Hello bob give me job
Isn’t that red locktite?
@@neggym you want that dry. there is a rubber bushing that the saddle sits on...that will move when the axles walk around

I love how the heavy hammer is just as important as the big impacts!

Changed these on the street on front load garbage trucks loaded
What are the bolts for on the side of the top plate for? You didn't have to loosen them?
Thanks for watching!! They pull the spring in close to the saddle and no I just used a hammer.
I drove em both. The Camelback was bad but the Hendrickson was worse. Hendrickson was unbreakable but stlil....
Good Video 👍

Why didn't you reuse the bolts in the saddle assembly?
they are always rotten....we never re-use them anymore. not worth the risk.
