Completely true. I work at a transmission shop. They are all junk anymore. Ive done some with even lower miles. People need to do transmission service about every 30 k. Or less. You cant over service these new transmissions
Depends on what transmission it is. We do not have a flush machine. So what we do is drain and fills. If you are able to change filter. You should. Be carful where you get your filter from. I would only buy from dealer. Aftermarket filters can cause issues. Also only use specified fluid. Most your front wheel drive cars you cannot change the filter without pulling the trans and splitting the case. Because of this and i personal believe the fluids break down faster then what the manufacturers say they do is why i say to change at least every 30 thousand.
@@robertohashem the dealer put 8 quarts back in after a pan drop/filter change that took out 6 quarts at most. So I took it to Victorylane for a flush - the confirmed there was 3 quarts too much. But the transmission only latest 30K more - and total failure at 273K. It's only rated to 275K for the 4l60e - so my attempt to extend the life was futile. hahahaha. Now I'm scared to go over 5000 rpm on the Remans but I put on an external Magnefine OEM filter - and immediately the shifting was smoother. Also GM put out a TSB to add a 2nd magnet or a bigger magnet. And yeah I've read people having serious issues changing their filters - so I'd rather just change out the external filter and inline magnet ever 15K miles.

Absolutely true!!! I found out the hard way too. I thought I was safe when I got warranty JUST before it was up. But the disgustingly dishonest, lying, crooked, slimy, and sleezy dealership in Saskatoon Sk (the one that sounds like esss emmm pee) screwed me on warranty AFTER they rebuilt it. They accomplished this by completely piecing the entire transmission together, which included the housing, thereby reducing the normal rebuild warranty period from 160km, down to 20 km. And after a pathetic 40 km, the transmission was done again. I was laughed at, when I confronted the dealership, and they told me I had the option of having it rebuilt at my expense of $6990. So I responded by giving them the option of taking a flying leap. I had the transmission rebuilt professionally by EXTREME TRANSMISSION in Saskatoon for about $3000 about 4 years ago, and it's been fantastic!!! Big shout out to them and a big thank you too!!!
I got a ‘14 Chevy impala with 295k miles , no tuneups no major work besides common brake pads and rotors. It runs smooth and very quiet. All i do is keep up with my oil changes thats it.
I’ve owned two Silverados and i was on my way to the fifth transmission between the two, but I flushed it, before buying another transmission. One trans went out at 92,000 and the 3 year 99,000 warranty replacement from gm went out at 3 years ago be week at 13,000 and they only gave me $100 off the cost of the next one. I was ignorant enough to just think I bought a lemon and purchased another one. The second the warranty expired it was a/c compressor, fuel ⛽️ injectors , and then the trans was slipping gears, so on to Nissan titan.
Owners don’t flush when told by the owners manual that to me is the problem and also relocating the muffler is essential and not raising it so high and their was a recall to the trans temp module to be replaced to open at a lower temperature. All can be avoided on these transmissions.

Im sure the the transmission tech has also been at the shop for a while
It’s pretty common in the tech world, so with newer cars being more tech-oriented it makes sense that automakers would start doing the same. Just sucks for the consumers who purchase their junk

They don’t even need to “plan” all the newer ones have cell tower connections. Gm can literally send the brick code whenever they’d like. All newer cars have to force the EVs out.

But as long as you hit the Torque converter before it starts giving issues theyre golden but you gotta watch for them lifters. Tourqe converter and a DOD delete and these things are pretty good. Shouldnt have to do upgrades to make it a reliable daily but it is what it is. I bought for 35k at 70thousand i put 70 on it, put a tourque converter in and flushed with amsoil as soon as i bought it, just changed it recently. Dont let my name fool you i somehow switched up over the years.

The transmission itself is usually fine until the torque converter goes. If you catch the torque converter failing early, most people can save the transmission by just replacing that part with a stronger aftermarket one. Once the torque converter goes the whole transmission eats shrapnel.

Transmission 8spd. on my ‘16 Escalade started to shatter around 60k, got it serviced under warranty and manager admitted the transmission is garbage. They replaced some kind of cable or wire harness inside and completely replaced old lube and reprogrammed it. Still ok now at 100k, but I feel it doesn’t work 100% right, kind of hesitates at very low speed.Keep my fingers crossed, love the truck otherwise.
There is a valve you can buy that will send the oil to the oil cooler at a lower temp (145 vs 190). Google it, but it, and install it, it’s the best protection from this happening and it’s insanely easy to install. 20 minute job. Also, buy the cylinder deactivation delete device while your at it and save your motor. The 1-1.2mpg increase on your engine using the cylinder deactivation isn’t worth jack…
I heard a transmission guy say that the MDS system causes the torque converter to partially unlock when activated which is causing the torque converter to fail sending metal debris through the whole unit which damages the pump causing low line pressure which burns up the clutches. Just deleting the MDS system might be enough to increase transmission longevity.
First of all GM says that the fluid is “good for the life of the transmission” and doesn’t need to be changed. What they don’t tell you is their idea of the “life of the transmission” is about 130k miles. My mother in law had an Equinox that was mint. She had the dealer do the service and they never changed the trans fluid. Of course when it did die they said it wasn’t worth the cost of the trans replacement and tried to sell her a new car. We helped her buy a Honda and she gets the fluid changed every 35k miles. We gave her $2k for the Equinox and had the trans rebuilt. Sold it and broke even.
My transmission guy said the converter comes apart on the newer gmc/chevys and trashes the whole transmission. so I had him order a billet torque converter at 64k miles and now over 100k still shifting great 🤞
The problem is with the factory thermal bypass valve. Factory valves run to hot(full open at 194f, new valve full open at 158f) -there is a service bulletin for this- burning up the converters. But Chevy/gm have always had problems with heat. Best thing a person can do is change the fluid before the recommended intervals. I change my 07 trailblazer trans fluid every fall and the trans shifts like it is new with 300k miles on it.

I don’t like newer models of ANYTHING! Not Ford, not GM, not Toyota, not Honda, not ANY of them whatsoever. Everything is so consumed with electronics, you don’t need mechanics to work on vehicles anymore, you need electricians & computer engineers! I mean come on… instead of having crap like self driving, lane assist, self parking, & countless other stupid useless crap that costs an absolute fortune to repair how about just learn how to drive & minimize the use of computer dependent junk! It’s gotten to the point you can’t even check your own transmission fluid, & other vital fluids in a lot of vehicles now without going to a dealership or a garage! WTF!!! And EV’s are nooo where near advanced enough for all these car companies to be jumping on the bandwagon with. I agree 100% that we gotta start moving away from crude oil based fuels because we’re running out slowly but surely, but until a sustainable fuel source can be figured out so people can pull up, fuel up, & be back on the road in a matter of moments it’s just leading to more problems. How many times have you went to a fuel station & had to wait in line to get fuel? Now how is it gonna work when multiple people are waiting in line for each & every vehicle to sit & charge a battery?!? Not to mention the EV batteries have gotten WORSE not better, & the resources it takes to make just ONE EV battery pack is insane!! You would have to drive an EV car/truck about 100,000 miles before it would even begin to start being green, but the battery packs are wearing out & needing replaced between 70,000 & 100,000 miles! Do the math on that one & tell me how EV’s are the next big green thing… My brother in-law has a hybrid (not even a full EV) & his battery pack has went bad like countless others & needed replaced at 68,000 miles. Anyone care to know how much a new battery pack costed him?… 10 grand & that’s not counting the other 2+ grand it costed just to have it installed!!! We need to figure something else out because this EV crap is NOT working out.

Got the transmission for about four and another stack to throw it in I didn't have a choice. Some places have financing that doesn't affect your credit just a small loan might not cover the entire cost but better than putting up all your money at this point, I'm just gonn ride till the wheels fall off .If I would've traded it in, I would've owed more than I would've spent on the transmission basically restarting my note .I forgot to mention I literally just paid it off like six months before this happened so don't feel to bad man, I wanted to efffin cry 😂
@@volcom305670 Sadly, I don't think the lawsuit applies to ours because it's a 10 speed. The biggest expense for us would be the rebuild or a new transmission, because we can pull it out and put it in ourselves.
You will be lucky to get $60 in the class action. Class action lawsuits are such bullshit. All the money goes to the lawyers and court fees and very little goes to the consumers that are effected by it

my subie was brand new 2017 and sold it at 150,000(did walnut blasting, first oil change at 1000km etc) and it was tuned and it was still brand new feeling when I sold it. the idea that a tranny could go before 100k and that people would accept that is pure mental illness
PSA: "Lifetime Fill Transmission" is "Lifetime of the warranty" i.e. 100k. Failed at 113k, not surprised. Don't let any dealership or mechanic tell you you don't need to change the fluid. You do. This is for ALL brands, not just GM. Simple drain and fill is all you need (and a new filter). Put 200k on my '14 Cruze TD with a few amsoil flushes and never had an issue.

My 02 Silverado Z71 was so reliable and ran great with 175k mikes on it. Was so sad when I had to sell it since I couldn’t find parking when I moved to a big city. To this day I have dreams that I still own it. The V8 sounded so great too with instant power.

@Mr. Hemiroids no, i love manual. The only thing with my 2000 silverado, was the rear crossmembers rusted out. Replaced them, removed and repainted frame up to the front doors. In spring, will continue the rest.
These can last just as long as a 4L60. The problem is they came from the factory with a bypass thermostat on the trans fluid line that forces it to have an operating temp of somewhere between 196F and 200F. That causes the torque converter failures, valve body issues, loss of gears, etc. Guys on the forums knew about it back in 2014 but word didn't get around too well I guess. GM finally released a new thermostat valve a few years ago that keeps temps down around 160F but most don't know about it. Most owners of 2014+ trucks don't even know enough to change their trans fluid every 30k or 40k miles, so not surprising they don't know about the bypass valve.

I am a big GM guy but I have to admit the quality is trash now. I worked at a GMC dealer until recently and I saw transmission problems galore and also 5.3L V8s droping lifters left and right. I even had the occasional customer buy a new truck and need a new motor within a week of purchasing. It is a real shame because the older stuff was indestructible from my experience. Worst part is they now charge a $100,000 for a top of the line Denali Yukon or 1500. No thank you!
See, this is why I'm scared to replace my 02 Chevy Tahoe. I've had it for years and have 240k same engine & trans. I always say I want to get it to 250k but now I hope I never have to replace it for fear of the crap made nowadays.
Can confirm. I noticed the shudder at around 80,000 miles. Waited for three weeks for Chevy to get the parts to us. $3500 because I caught it early. Could have been $8,000
Big Chevy fan here wouldn't drive anything else, but my dad and mom bought a used 2017 Chevy Suburban from a dealer with 117 thousand miles on it in. Less than three weeks of owning it the transmission went out. So unfortunately this is accurate.
Crazy how things have changed! Mopar was the one's that had the bad rep about bad transmissions. Now it's the other way around. It's better to buy a Mopar! Just buy you Ram!

Funny thing abt an automatic. If the fluid has never been touched & hasn’t been driven hard, you have till 100k to change it out. Anything after 110 you’ll start to notice bad stuff in shifting or suddenly getting transmission codes.
Ever since 2010s chevy just can't make a decent transmission anymore, if you get a 3/4 ton truck you almost can't use it to haul anything. Kinda sad how shitty they've become, at least the engines are still okay

You are right, I went to do a pre-purchase inspection with a customer, we looked at 6 different suburbans and tahoes all around 100k miles and all of them had their transmission replaced at least once

I get 350,000 miles out of my trucks. The trick is to shift manually This keeps torque converter from constantly locking and unlocking. Keep it above 2,000 rpm! I hold the record for most miles according to several dealers and transmission shops 😀
I had a 2015 all terrain 4x4.the transmission was never smooth from day one. I dumped it before it went out of warranty. oh, and the a/c died at 30000 miles.
They were listed on severe UA-cam sites of vehicles to avoid. That’s about when they put the new 8 speed transmission. I believe there is a Class Action suit against GM. You should look into that. Wishing you all the best.
A lot of those sites say to avoid every vehicle on the road. You need to take that stuff with a grain of salt and do your own research. Best place to look is the forums. That’s where everyone goes to complain and you’ll really see the scope of the problem.
But then they wouldn’t be able to get 10 speeds. When the hell did we start needing all these different speeds when these new vehicles put out way more h.p. and torque.
6 gear manuals are the norm these days I have a 2014 vauxhall mokka (Buick Encore) 150k on the clock not had to change fluid yet. Pulls like a train but it does have the 1.7 cdti Isuzu engine.
I actually bought a 05 with the intention of manual swap they are the last gen to have factory manuals so you can get factory parts it's actually been parked due to 3rd gear slip in the 4l60e on its 3rd transmission and to be fair I have 35" tires and a lead foot only got 40k out of this last rebuild my 1ton 83 GMC 454 4x4 th400 original transmission 40 years and still going strong 💪😎
I pull a 14’ enclosed work trailer on average every 10 days. Material and scaffolding plus trailer weight, 3,000lbs? Average 10-30 miles pulling the trailer to job sites.
I feel like GM doesn’t want to make reliable car anymore if they were taking that business serious they could be ahead of Toyota but they more focus on profit and coming up with a bunch of BS car
I do transmission + differential oil changes every 25-30k miles. Been nothing but smooth sailing. Use good oil and do it often. Don't run the truck to 100K miles with the same oil and then complain why the transmission went out 😂 a lot has to do on how you maintain your vehicle.
I have two 2017 express 2500. Both had a minimum of three trans services. Both puked at exactly 150k miles. Both were driven by employees who drive like senior citizens. It's NOT a coincidence. While I drive a 2006 Chevy Express 3500 with 350k miles. Original engine and trans. Still strong as hell!!!! New Chevy trans ARE TRASH!!!
In all fairness, the customers are who ruined the auto industry. People are choosing to put a full week’s paycheck into their car payment every month. Ford and GM are running a business, so with all these people telling them that they want 60-100K trucks, you can’t blame them for building them.
Just had wife’s 2017 Yukon transmission rebuilt at 110k. At 85k had to replace radiator and transmission in my 2020 dually. My 2007 Yukon xl went 250k and the lifters went out. 2006 H2 with 350k still running strong.
2006 H2 has the good ol’ 6.0 Vortec if I remember correctly. It’s no wonder it’s been so damn good to you. Those old GM truck engines are pretty much invincible.
My dads 2010 F-350 with the 6.4 diesel had the original transmission and he had 300,000 miles on that truck. The first 6.4 motor blew due to a manufacturing defect. Got a new motor put in. I miss that truck. He sold it. It was such a bad ass plow truck.
Not just that but the afm/dod causing lifter failures . And Gm “coincidentally” changing the power train warranty from 100k to 60k tells you they knew it would happen.
Toyota isn't any better. The 2016+ Tacoma was such junk that die hard Taco fans nicknamed the 3rd gen "the turd gen" and consumer reports rated it least reliable midsize truck for like 3 or 4 years in a row. The 2022+ Tundra has engine failures left and right. LSPI is a common issue with engines with a lot of boost and an oil consumption issue. LSPI eventually cracks pistons and destroys crank bearings... which are the common pattern of failure with the new 3.4L TT engine in the new Tundra. Even the Honda Ridgeline has major issues with transmission issues. The torque converter eventually fails if the trans fluid isn't changed often enough -- Honda recommends every 30k miles. Ironically, if GM trucks ow ers changed their transmission fluid that often, those 6 speeds would last twice as long as they currently do, although the updated transmission cooler bypass valve is the part that needs to be installed to prevent GM 6-speeds from destroying themselves but most people are blissfully unaware.

Newer tech has issues, especially smaller engines with turbo technology. But even with the issues, they still stand way above GM & Chrysler & have made several models that have surpassed a million miles on the road that are still running. Please name some american models that have surpassed a million miles & are still running, I'll wait ...
Replaced my 2016 Tahoe transmission at 54k miles, the warranty company kindly shipped in a defective Trans replaced 800 miles later. 3rd transmission worked. So we'll see how long this lasts
People can try to say these do not the issues but here's a story. So i know 4 people that are clos to me with 2014-18 1/2 ton GM trucks. All of them had transmission issues in under 110k miles. None were used to tow heavy or very often. one failed at 45k, 70k, 108k and the other was a little over 100k. All of them traded them in on Fords...not that they do not have issues but nothing as consistent as those amount of transmission failures and lifter problems.
Because no one flushes them after break in and they drive for 100k with all the metal shavings and clutch material from when it was brand new with a plugged filter. Service the transmission at 10k miles and again at 40k and i bet this issue would almost disappear and they would last!
I hope it’s that simple. But dealerships don’t recommend this, and say it’s good for life. Other people were saying it’s the torque converter that goes bad around 100k
the AFM switching between v4 and v8 also kills them as it forces them to slip, but that thermostat is also a huge one too 👍, theres a nice delete kit out there for it
@@yamihere1989 it’s like $90, I believe. But I just tapped and plugged mine. I already had the tools. So I just waltzed into o’reilly’s and got a 1/4 brass plug and popped it in. Now my gauge won’t even show it going above 150.
Yes. That was a terrible year, many recalls too. Many manufacturers have problems in their V6. Computers can help R&D, But computers can’t know IF it lasts. All manufacturers have some good and some real bad products, consumers are always the guinea pigs.

Lexus is very good. Toyota makes Lexus. All of my customers with Lexus vehicles are very pleased with them and I rarely see them in the shop for any major repair.
The first diesel story is real I guarantee it. Had one with 1.4 no egr delete. Full stock. She's not pretty and I'm talking about dirt roads 80% of the time.

@@CoffeeAndBusiness yeah the DOD (4cyl mode)- is Notorious for eating lifters. I’m at 100k on my original just fine. Some ppl have them go at 10k some ppl they last a while. You seem to be doing good with yours.
@@alexolsen991 oh that’s right my buddy told me about that. He told me there is a way to shut that off so you are V8 all the time. Maybe I should look into it. To be fair though it is all highway miles. I bought the truck used and I put about 40k on trucks in a year. So not a lot of swapping in and out of v8.
People tow a lot without turning on the tow mode. Because it doesn't feel like it's having a hard time pulling and wants to shift, people use that sixth gear for better mileage. The down side is overheating the clutches and burning the fluid.
My 05 doesn’t feel right when in tow mode. I haul my 5x8 with 2 mowers. Both fairly light. Idk why but I just hate the feeling of it. Maybe it’s supposed to feel like that in tow mode. Idk. Not a mechanic guy.

That’s interesting because the 6l80 and Ford’s 6R80 were a joint venture between Ford and GM. They licensed a ZF design and worked together to adapt it for American pickup truck needs. However, they only shared the design and they both build their own version. Seems GM must have done a bunch of cost-cutting because the Ford 6R80 is the best automatic transmission ever made. There were some issues with the lead frames but that was a relatively easy and cheap fix. The base trans is fantastic.
@@AlphanumericCharacters Agree, Chrysler has had great experience with the evolution of that trans in the ZF 8HP series. They've been around since 2011 and we never have to touch them, even in high horsepower applications like 392 and Hellcat. Impressive engineering.
The boys don’t know anything about fixing a truck. Don’t understand the advancements made and that’s the truth. Any truck can fail. But what’s your maintenance schedule. I know. When you have a damn problem. I change my breaks at 50k no matter what. I bleed them, I clean the intake valves weekly. It’s more than getting in and turning a key.
Out of 15 3500 every one needed a new transmission at 100k give or take 10k. Mind you they were all driven hard and every one of them now have over 300k and the transmissions are still good except for two of them.
2014 silverado 1500… 104000 or so and BAM! Right out of the blue . It happened. Same just last week.. GM sent a new one but cant wait for the next 100k
Toyota builds quality vehicles in the US that meet government mandates. So long as consumers buy trucks and SUVs from domestics to feel patriotic, Ford, GM, and GM won't change.
They never really made good trucks. They had a long period where they had good engines and ok transmissions but their interior was horrendously cheap inside. Then they upped their interior game in 07 and their DOD and Service Stabilitrak problems showed up. If you can deal with how crappy their interior was before that, they're good trucks. But I wouldn't buy anything after 07 classic body.
I'm a professional transmission technician and the 6L80 and 6L90 have become our bread and butter. One major issue is the how the torque converter is made. It can't handle the heat and over time "pops" which takes out the rest of the transmission. It's called job security for me lol
Yep that’s why they came out with the newer transmission valve that sends oil to the cooler at 145 vs 190. Literally the first thing I did to my Suburban to keep the temp down.

I couldn't be happier with such a sturdy transmission as the stock 700R on my 83 Chevy Caprice station wagon. Hopefully some smart people will someday figure out a way to time-travel me back to the 80s!
I agree but a manual transmission car is a dying breed today. The manufacturers are not building them anymore because automatic transmissions are just as efficient as a manual transmission also people don't know how to drive them. A manual transmission just isn't practical anymore.
Too bad GM doesn't offer a W/ S base model with the new 3.0 Diesel and a 6- speed manual. That I might buy, at a reasonable price..but the depreciation on a new vehicle+ interest rates+ outrageous sticker prices are keeping people away..

I had a 2013 Sierra & at 95k miles it dropped a lifter. Warranty was supposed to be bumper to bumper for 100k, they wouldn't cover it. I sent it back to the bank. They wanted $12,000 to replace the 5.3 engine.
He speaks the truth, right after my 2018 suburban hit 100,000 miles the torque converter blew and wrecked the transmission, total rebuild. The vehicle was not abused or driven rough.
My 2016 2500HD had 102k when the transmission went out. I only hauled my two bikes maybe 3x a year that truck was definitely not abused. I sold it a week after swapping the transmission.
Bro same thing happened to my 2016 Yukon slt 😤 I have pictures of the truck still and yeah it needed a new transmission at 103k miles. I was so confused how this truck needs a new transmission already 😤. I have a 1996 Tahoe and a 1998 gmc Yukon slt ! The same Yukon different year! And those 90’s truck still run good at 150k and 130k miles!! And they’re 25 years old! I’m shook of wtf happened with GM. It makes me not wanna buy another newer vehicle anymore. 😒

Cadillac owner here. Have owed 5 caddies. 2014 was the worst year. Replaced the trunk latch, power seat motor, water pump, cooling fan, alternator twice, and the transmission started slipping at 70,000 miles. Let's just say, I no longer own any Cadillacs

Yup got a T5 transmission on a Iroc-Z , a 700R4 in a S10, and 94 Silverado 4L60E...all good transmissions once you get into the 2009 6L80 and up especially with the 10 speed auto, I heard what helps is take the transmission thermostat out to cool the transmission cause they run hot and burn clutches faster
Same. There is an after market kit that puts in a lower temp thermostat. Some good videos on UA-cam showing how to do it. I plan to do mine this spring. 2018 Tahoe once warmed up runs at 195F. Empty, just the driver.
LOL, I would have loved to get 100,000 miles out of my 2018 Silverado. Torque Convertor grenaded at 60,000 miles. Sends material all throughout the complete transmission ruining basically everything. You can at least put in a modified replacement tranny that is far superior to the GM factory design. It just costs an arm and a leg BUT should get at least 120,000 miles out of it. Fingers crossed that is ...... 😊

Completely true. I work at a transmission shop. They are all junk anymore. Ive done some with even lower miles. People need to do transmission service about every 30 k. Or less. You cant over service these new transmissions
What exactly would a transmission service be? Flush or just remove oil pan and filter and refill. Which would you recommend?
Depends on what transmission it is. We do not have a flush machine. So what we do is drain and fills. If you are able to change filter. You should. Be carful where you get your filter from. I would only buy from dealer. Aftermarket filters can cause issues. Also only use specified fluid. Most your front wheel drive cars you cannot change the filter without pulling the trans and splitting the case. Because of this and i personal believe the fluids break down faster then what the manufacturers say they do is why i say to change at least every 30 thousand.

@@robertohashem the dealer put 8 quarts back in after a pan drop/filter change that took out 6 quarts at most. So I took it to Victorylane for a flush - the confirmed there was 3 quarts too much. But the transmission only latest 30K more - and total failure at 273K. It's only rated to 275K for the 4l60e - so my attempt to extend the life was futile. hahahaha. Now I'm scared to go over 5000 rpm on the Remans but I put on an external Magnefine OEM filter - and immediately the shifting was smoother. Also GM put out a TSB to add a 2nd magnet or a bigger magnet. And yeah I've read people having serious issues changing their filters - so I'd rather just change out the external filter and inline magnet ever 15K miles.

Absolutely true!!! I found out the hard way too. I thought I was safe when I got warranty JUST before it was up. But the disgustingly dishonest, lying, crooked, slimy, and sleezy dealership in Saskatoon Sk (the one that sounds like esss emmm pee) screwed me on warranty AFTER they rebuilt it. They accomplished this by completely piecing the entire transmission together, which included the housing, thereby reducing the normal rebuild warranty period from 160km, down to 20 km. And after a pathetic 40 km, the transmission was done again. I was laughed at, when I confronted the dealership, and they told me I had the option of having it rebuilt at my expense of $6990. So I responded by giving them the option of taking a flying leap. I had the transmission rebuilt professionally by EXTREME TRANSMISSION in Saskatoon for about $3000 about 4 years ago, and it's been fantastic!!! Big shout out to them and a big thank you too!!!
I got a ‘14 Chevy impala with 295k miles , no tuneups no major work besides common brake pads and rotors. It runs smooth and very quiet. All i do is keep up with my oil changes thats it.
And drive it like a normal person.

I’ve owned two Silverados and i was on my way to the fifth transmission between the two, but I flushed it, before buying another transmission. One trans went out at 92,000 and the 3 year 99,000 warranty replacement from gm went out at 3 years ago be week at 13,000 and they only gave me $100 off the cost of the next one.
I was ignorant enough to just think I bought a lemon and purchased another one. The second the warranty expired it was a/c compressor, fuel ⛽️ injectors , and then the trans was slipping gears, so on to Nissan titan.
At the time I bought a 13' Silverado with the 4 speed. I don't regret it. Still runs strong
Owners don’t flush when told by the owners manual that to me is the problem and also relocating the muffler is essential and not raising it so high and their was a recall to the trans temp module to be replaced to open at a lower temperature. All can be avoided on these transmissions.
Believe me it’s not only newer Chevys. All new makes and models suck. I just had my 2012 transmission totally overhauled.
I used to work in the GM shop, there was one tech dedicated to swapping transmissions, all day every day

I bought for 35k at 70thousand i put 70 on it, put a tourque converter in and flushed with amsoil as soon as i bought it, just changed it recently. The transmission itself is usually fine until the torque converter goes. If you catch the torque converter failing early, most people can save the transmission by just replacing that part with a stronger aftermarket one. Once the torque converter goes the whole transmission eats shrapnel.

Transmission 8spd. on my ‘16 Escalade started to shatter around 60k, got it serviced under warranty and manager admitted the transmission is garbage. They replaced some kind of cable or wire harness inside and completely replaced old lube and reprogrammed it. Still ok now at 100k, but I feel it doesn’t work 100% right, kind of hesitates at very low speed.Keep my fingers crossed, love the truck otherwise.
There is a valve you can buy that will send the oil to the oil cooler at a lower temp (145 vs 190). Google it, but it, and install it, it’s the best protection from this happening and it’s insanely easy to install. 20 minute job. Also, buy the cylinder deactivation delete device while your at it and save your motor. The 1-1.2mpg increase on your engine using the cylinder deactivation isn’t worth jack…

This and the 6 bolt gm converter. Drain and fill with a filter every 50k. They’ll last a long time.
I heard a transmission guy say that the MDS system causes the torque converter to partially unlock when activated which is causing the torque converter to fail sending metal debris through the whole unit which damages the pump causing low line pressure which burns up the clutches. Just deleting the MDS system might be enough to increase transmission longevity.
First of all GM says that the fluid is “good for the life of the transmission” and doesn’t need to be changed. What they don’t tell you is their idea of the “life of the transmission” is about 130k miles. My mother in law had an Equinox that was mint. She had the dealer do the service and they never changed the trans fluid. Of course when it did die they said it wasn’t worth the cost of the trans replacement and tried to sell her a new car. We helped her buy a Honda and she gets the fluid changed every 35k miles. We gave her $2k for the Equinox and had the trans rebuilt. Sold it and broke even.
My transmission guy said the converter comes apart on the newer gmc/chevys and trashes the whole transmission. so I had him order a billet torque converter at 64k miles and now over 100k still shifting great 🤞

You are correct. It is all the converter ruining all of them. They all are the same
The problem is with the factory thermal bypass valve. Factory valves run to hot(full open at 194f, new valve full open at 158f) -there is a service bulletin for this- burning up the converters. But Chevy/gm have always had problems with heat. Best thing a person can do is change the fluid before the recommended intervals. I change my 07 trailblazer trans fluid every fall and the trans shifts like it is new with 300k miles on it.
I heard that same thing about the old 4l60Es do they just use the same converters for everything since 97?

Can confirm. The transmission in my 17’ Yukon left me stranded at 126k, which was actually longer than it was designed to last.

Everything is so consumed with electronics, you don’t need mechanics to work on vehicles anymore, you need electricians & computer engineers! I mean come on… instead of having crap like self driving, lane assist, self parking, & countless other stupid useless crap that costs an absolute fortune to repair how about just learn how to drive & minimize the use of computer dependent junk! It’s gotten to the point you can’t even check your own transmission fluid, & other vital fluids in a lot of vehicles now without going to a dealership or a garage! WTF!!! And EV’s are nooo where near advanced enough for all these car companies to be jumping on the bandwagon with. I agree 100% that we gotta start moving away from crude oil based fuels because we’re running out slowly but surely, but until a sustainable fuel source can be figured out so people can pull up, fuel up, & be back on the road in a matter of moments it’s just leading to more problems. How many times have you went to a fuel station & had to wait in line to get fuel? Now how is it gonna work when multiple people are waiting in line for each & every vehicle to sit & charge a battery?!? Not to mention the EV batteries have gotten WORSE not better, & the resources it takes to make just ONE EV battery pack is insane!! You would have to drive an EV car/truck about 100,000 miles before it would even begin to start being green, but the battery packs are wearing out & needing replaced between 70,000 & 100,000 miles! Do the math on that one & tell me how EV’s are the next big green thing… My brother in-law has a hybrid (not even a full EV) & his battery pack has went bad like countless others & needed replaced at 68,000 miles. Anyone care to know how much a new battery pack costed him?… 10 grand & that’s not counting the other 2+ grand it costed just to have it installed!!! We need to figure something else out because this EV crap is NOT working out.

Got the transmission for about four and another stack to throw it in I didn't have a choice. Some places have financing that doesn't affect your credit just a small loan might not cover the entire cost but better than putting up all your money at this point, I'm just gonn ride till the wheels fall off .If I would've traded it in, I would've owed more than I would've spent on the transmission basically restarting my note .I forgot to mention I literally just paid it off like six months before this happened so don't feel to bad man, I wanted to efffin cry 😂

PSA: "Lifetime Fill Transmission" is "Lifetime of the warranty" i.e. 100k. Failed at 113k, not surprised. Don't let any dealership or mechanic tell you you don't need to change the fluid. You do. This is for ALL brands, not just GM. Simple drain and fill is all you need (and a new filter). Put 200k on my '14 Cruze TD with a few amsoil flushes and never had an issue.

My 02 Silverado Z71 was so reliable and ran great with 175k mikes on it. Was so sad when I had to sell it since I couldn’t find parking when I moved to a big city. To this day I have dreams that I still own it. The V8 sounded so great too with instant power.

@Mr. Hemiroids no, i love manual. The only thing with my 2000 silverado, was the rear crossmembers rusted out. Replaced them, removed and repainted frame up to the front doors. In spring, will continue the rest.

These can last just as long as a 4L60. The problem is they came from the factory with a bypass thermostat on the trans fluid line that forces it to have an operating temp of somewhere between 196F and 200F. That causes the torque converter failures, valve body issues, loss of gears, etc. Guys on the forums knew about it back in 2014 but word didn't get around too well I guess. GM finally released a new thermostat valve a few years ago that keeps temps down around 160F but most don't know about it. Most owners of 2014+ trucks don't even know enough to change their trans fluid every 30k or 40k miles, so not surprising they don't know about the bypass valve.

I am a big GM guy but I have to admit the quality is trash now. I worked at a GMC dealer until recently and I saw transmission problems galore and also 5.3L V8s droping lifters left and right. I even had the occasional customer buy a new truck and need a new motor within a week of purchasing. It is a real shame because the older stuff was indestructible from my experience. Worst part is they now charge a $100,000 for a top of the line Denali Yukon or 1500. No thank you!
See, this is why I'm scared to replace my 02 Chevy Tahoe. I've had it for years and have 240k same engine & trans. I always say I want to get it to 250k but now I hope I never have to replace it for fear of the crap made nowadays.

Can confirm. I noticed the shudder at around 80,000 miles. Waited for three weeks for Chevy to get the parts to us. $3500 because I caught it early. Could have been $8,000

Big Chevy fan here wouldn't drive anything else, but my dad and mom bought a used 2017 Chevy Suburban from a dealer with 117 thousand miles on it in. Less than three weeks of owning it the transmission went out. So unfortunately this is accurate.

Funny thing abt an automatic. If the fluid has never been touched & hasn’t been driven hard, you have till 100k to change it out. Anything after 110 you’ll start to notice bad stuff in shifting or suddenly getting transmission codes.

You are right, I went to do a pre-purchase inspection with a customer, we looked at 6 different suburbans and tahoes all around 100k miles and all of them had their transmission replaced at least once

I had a 2015 all terrain 4x4.the transmission was never smooth from day one. I dumped it before it went out of warranty. oh, and the a/c died at 30000 miles.

2017 Acadia needs new transmission at 89k miles meanwhile my 1999 Chevy Silverado with 200k miles is fine.
They were listed on severe UA-cam sites of vehicles to avoid. That’s about when they put the new 8 speed transmission. I believe there is a Class Action suit against GM. You should look into that. Wishing you all the best.

A lot of those sites say to avoid every vehicle on the road. You need to take that stuff with a grain of salt and do your own research. Best place to look is the forums. That’s where everyone goes to complain and you’ll really see the scope of the problem.

6 gear manuals are the norm these days I have a 2014 vauxhall mokka (Buick Encore) 150k on the clock not had to change fluid yet. Pulls like a train but it does have the 1.7 cdti Isuzu engine.
I actually bought a 05 with the intention of manual swap they are the last gen to have factory manuals so you can get factory parts it's actually been parked due to 3rd gear slip in the 4l60e on its 3rd transmission and to be fair I have 35" tires and a lead foot only got 40k out of this last rebuild my 1ton 83 GMC 454 4x4 th400 original transmission 40 years and still going strong 💪😎

I do transmission + differential oil changes every 25-30k miles. Been nothing but smooth sailing. Use good oil and do it often. Don't run the truck to 100K miles with the same oil and then complain why the transmission went out 😂 a lot has to do on how you maintain your vehicle.

In all fairness, the customers are who ruined the auto industry. People are choosing to put a full week’s paycheck into their car payment every month. Ford and GM are running a business, so with all these people telling them that they want 60-100K trucks, you can’t blame them for building them.

My 2016 Tahoe’s transmission went at 106,000. $6000 to fix
Just had wife’s 2017 Yukon transmission rebuilt at 110k. At 85k had to replace radiator and transmission in my 2020 dually. My 2007 Yukon xl went 250k and the lifters went out. 2006 H2 with 350k still running strong.
That H2 has probably burned over $100k in gas lol.
2006 H2 has the good ol’ 6.0 Vortec if I remember correctly. It’s no wonder it’s been so damn good to you. Those old GM truck engines are pretty much invincible.

My dads 2010 F-350 with the 6.4 diesel had the original transmission and he had 300,000 miles on that truck. The first 6.4 motor blew due to a manufacturing defect. Got a new motor put in. I miss that truck. He sold it. It was such a bad ass plow truck.
Not just that but the afm/dod causing lifter failures . And Gm “coincidentally” changing the power train warranty from 100k to 60k tells you they knew it would happen.
American manufacturers should be ashamed.
Toyota isn't any better. The 2016+ Tacoma was such junk that die hard Taco fans nicknamed the 3rd gen "the turd gen" and consumer reports rated it least reliable midsize truck for like 3 or 4 years in a row. The 2022+ Tundra has engine failures left and right. LSPI is a common issue with engines with a lot of boost and an oil consumption issue. LSPI eventually cracks pistons and destroys crank bearings... which are the common pattern of failure with the new 3.4L TT engine in the new Tundra. Even the Honda Ridgeline has major issues with transmission issues. The torque converter eventually fails if the trans fluid isn't changed often enough -- Honda recommends every 30k miles. Ironically, if GM trucks ow ers changed their transmission fluid that often, those 6 speeds would last twice as long as they currently do, although the updated transmission cooler bypass valve is the part that needs to be installed to prevent GM 6-speeds from destroying themselves but most people are blissfully unaware.

Newer tech has issues, especially smaller engines with turbo technology. But even with the issues, they still stand way above GM & Chrysler & have made several models that have surpassed a million miles on the road that are still running.

Replaced my 2016 Tahoe transmission at 54k miles, the warranty company kindly shipped in a defective Trans replaced 800 miles later. 3rd transmission worked. So we'll see how long this lasts
Replaced trans in my sierra at 136k out of pocket jasper reman. 3k later it’s back in the shop smfh
People can try to say these do not the issues but here's a story. So i know 4 people that are clos to me with 2014-18 1/2 ton GM trucks. All of them had transmission issues in under 110k miles. None were used to tow heavy or very often. one failed at 45k, 70k, 108k and the other was a little over 100k. All of them traded them in on Fords...not that they do not have issues but nothing as consistent as those amount of transmission failures and lifter problems.
It’s the same transmission. It is a joint developed transmission with GM and Ford. Hopefully Ford used better software mapping than GM!

Just had the transmission in my 2017 Silverado rebuilt with only 77,000 miles. $5,000. Sucks because my 2014 had 150,000 with no issues.
My 2014 justwent out within 2 weeks, at 175000. Tranny so won't rebuild they got crate tranny with all the upgrades done to replace it. $5500 ugh!!

Because no one flushes them after break in and they drive for 100k with all the metal shavings and clutch material from when it was brand new with a plugged filter. Service the transmission at 10k miles and again at 40k and i bet this issue would almost disappear and they would last!

I read that last year. That newer gm vehicles should have the transmission fluid and filter changed every 30k miles.
That what happens when you don’t delete the thermostat. Don’t be afraid to work on your own stuff and do research.
the AFM switching between v4 and v8 also kills them as it forces them to slip, but that thermostat is also a huge one too 👍, theres a nice delete kit out there for it

Yes. That was a terrible year, many recalls too. Many manufacturers have problems in their V6. Computers can help R&D, But computers can’t know IF it lasts. All manufacturers have some good and some real bad products, consumers are always the guinea pigs.

Lexus is very good. Toyota makes Lexus. All of my customers with Lexus vehicles are very pleased with them and I rarely see them in the shop for any major repair.

To be fair though it is all highway miles. I bought the truck used and I put about 40k on trucks in a year. So not a lot of swapping in and out of v8.
@Wapper Snappers highway miles are when it swaps to 4 cylinder mode the most. You're cruising with low rpms, which is when it swaps.

People tow a lot without turning on the tow mode. Because it doesn't feel like it's having a hard time pulling and wants to shift, people use that sixth gear for better mileage. The down side is overheating the clutches and burning the fluid.
Good point. Towing in overdrive is a big no-no.
My 05 doesn’t feel right when in tow mode. I haul my 5x8 with 2 mowers. Both fairly light. Idk why but I just hate the feeling of it. Maybe it’s supposed to feel like that in tow mode. Idk. Not a mechanic guy.

That’s interesting because the 6l80 and Ford’s 6R80 were a joint venture between Ford and GM. They licensed a ZF design and worked together to adapt it for American pickup truck needs. However, they only shared the design and they both build their own version. Seems GM must have done a bunch of cost-cutting because the Ford 6R80 is the best automatic transmission ever made. There were some issues with the lead frames but that was a relatively easy and cheap fix. The base trans is fantastic.
@@AlphanumericCharacters Agree, Chrysler has had great experience with the evolution of that trans in the ZF 8HP series. They've been around since 2011 and we never have to touch them, even in high horsepower applications like 392 and Hellcat. Impressive engineering.
The boys don’t know anything about fixing a truck. Don’t understand the advancements made and that’s the truth. Any truck can fail. But what’s your maintenance schedule. I know. When you have a damn problem. I change my breaks at 50k no matter what. I bleed them, I clean the intake valves weekly. It’s more than getting in and turning a key.
Out of 15 3500 every one needed a new transmission at 100k give or take 10k. Mind you they were all driven hard and every one of them now have over 300k and the transmissions are still good except for two of them.

The government wants better economy and there has to be a breaking point. It's the transmission.
Toyota builds quality vehicles in the US that meet government mandates. So long as consumers buy trucks and SUVs from domestics to feel patriotic, Ford, GM, and GM won't change.
They never really made good trucks. They had a long period where they had good engines and ok transmissions but their interior was horrendously cheap inside. Then they upped their interior game in 07 and their DOD and Service Stabilitrak problems showed up. If you can deal with how crappy their interior was before that, they're good trucks. But I wouldn't buy anything after 07 classic body.
This is why I’m a big advocate for manual transmissions. Nobody knows how to make an automatic

I'm a professional transmission technician and the 6L80 and 6L90 have become our bread and butter. One major issue is the how the torque converter is made. It can't handle the heat and over time "pops" which takes out the rest of the transmission. It's called job security for me lol
Yep that’s why they came out with the newer transmission valve that sends oil to the cooler at 145 vs 190. Literally the first thing I did to my Suburban to keep the temp down.

I agree but a manual transmission car is a dying breed today. The manufacturers are not building them anymore because automatic transmissions are just as efficient as a manual transmission also people don't know how to drive them. A manual transmission just isn't practical anymore.

I had a 2013 Sierra & at 95k miles it dropped a lifter. Warranty was supposed to be bumper to bumper for 100k, they wouldn't cover it. I sent it back to the bank. They wanted $12,000 to replace the 5.3 engine.

He speaks the truth, right after my 2018 suburban hit 100,000 miles the torque converter blew and wrecked the transmission, total rebuild. The vehicle was not abused or driven rough.
My 2016 2500HD had 102k when the transmission went out. I only hauled my two bikes maybe 3x a year that truck was definitely not abused. I sold it a week after swapping the transmission.
I would have put another 60,000 miles on it then Sold, But of course Would have gotten Way less for it, Maybe.
How many times did you change the Transmission Fluid in 102k ?
Bro same thing happened to my 2016 Yukon slt 😤 I have pictures of the truck still and yeah it needed a new transmission at 103k miles. I was so confused how this truck needs a new transmission already 😤. I have a 1996 Tahoe and a 1998 gmc Yukon slt ! The same Yukon different year! And those 90’s truck still run good at 150k and 130k miles!! And they’re 25 years old! I’m shook of wtf happened with GM. It makes me not wanna buy another newer vehicle anymore. 😒

Cadillac owner here. Have owed 5 caddies. 2014 was the worst year. Replaced the trunk latch, power seat motor, water pump, cooling fan, alternator twice, and the transmission started slipping at 70,000 miles. Let's just say, I no longer own any Cadillacs

Yup got a T5 transmission on a Iroc-Z , a 700R4 in a S10, and 94 Silverado 4L60E...all good transmissions once you get into the 2009 6L80 and up especially with the 10 speed auto, I heard what helps is take the transmission thermostat out to cool the transmission cause they run hot and burn clutches faster
Same. There is an after market kit that puts in a lower temp thermostat. Some good videos on UA-cam showing how to do it. I plan to do mine this spring. 2018 Tahoe once warmed up runs at 195F. Empty, just the driver.
10 speed is fine, the 8bspeed is the problem transmission. The 10 speed is the same transmission that Ford uses and they have had no issues.
LOL, I would have loved to get 100,000 miles out of my 2018 Silverado. Torque Convertor grenaded at 60,000 miles. Sends material all throughout the complete transmission ruining basically everything. You can at least put in a modified replacement tranny that is far superior to the GM factory design. It just costs an arm and a leg BUT should get at least 120,000 miles out of it. Fingers crossed that is ...... 😊
