It's finally done! I spent a few weeks on this project and it kinda took a lot out of me. I wanted to make this extra special to show all of you how thankful I am for the support you've given me.
I used Bazthar for this animatic because he's going through some major character development at the moment. His patron Tannager disowned him, so he found a way to contact a different demon and told him everything he knew. The demon Nelpis wants to get rid of Tannager, and Bazthar gave him the key to his plan. Nelpis offered to be Bazthar's new patron, but Bazthar declined. He said that he was done being a pawn for demons.
A short while later, Bazthar started having terrible nightmares. they made him feel powerless and weak, reminding him of all the times he had to rely on others for strength. He sensed the presence of a dangerous and powerful being. Voices in his head told him to spread eyes throughout the world. If he told anyone about it, he would die. He woke up with a magic staff topped with amethyst crystals. He was supposed to break them off and scatter them throughout his journey. The crystals would grow back the next day. And so Bazthar was forced back into warlockhood against his will. Fun!
There are other warlocks that follow the same patron. They all receive something that makes them "complete," such as a replacement arm or a powerful spellcasting focus.The warlocks experience terrible side effects if they try to give up on using their items, making them dependent on their item, so they can't even function without them. If Bazthar tries to stop using his staff (the Staff of the Spiteful, homebrew), it becomes difficult to breathe and his muscles give out.

Hello everyone! I'm baffled by how popular this video is getting. Thank you for the support and very kind comments, it means a lot to me!
I'm currently working on a quick video about Bazthar's experiences and character development. I'm very proud of how he's changed over the course of the campaign (which isn't over yet, there's still next quarter of school), and I want to talk about ways his character can advance.
If you have any questions you want answered, feel free to put them here. I'll try to answer as many as I can. I might answer some in the video too.

The fact that I rolled a 1 in patron attitude as a The Fiend was amazing. It's when the patron was ancestral and has basically become kind.
Let's just say I had way to much fun as a warlock that I shouldn't be having.
I now understand how to play warloks.

This perfectly captures how a Warlock should be in a roleplay stance. Powerful, but afflicted with constant crippling insanity due to his eldritch patron.
there is the old one warlock if you want that.but theres also much less maleficent ones,like the archfey patrons that are simply mischievous,the fiends who mostly want to use you as either a tool or entertainment.theres even celestial warlocks if for some reason your deity is not powerfull enough to iliccit a cleric

Or it's a Sibrex shaped like a snake that was used as glue for your body and all the souls in you that was apparently you, but due to magic you are the split off mortal pary of its soul in a corpse body that you then made a deal with so that you could put a peice of deep rot and a star ruby in your body with Abyssal energy to stabilize it and your soul. See, it is a very simple and not at all complicated relationship.
One difference in my Warlock's Patron is that he took a more direct role in forcing his ownership over me. Whispers of actions he wanted me to take constantly, causing aches and pains in random spots that never go away when I refused an action, taking away the pain when I finally gave into his demands. My Warlock walks with a limp because of the constant pain he endures in his right leg. The reason he was given that pain is because he won't kill the half-elf cleric in the group. A pain that slowly grows worse every day considering that he's taken up using a staff just to take pressure off that leg. Another thing that my Patron does is that if I don't use his/my magic in the way he likes he will have that magic start doing partial damage to me (acidic magic is the basis) so it looks like the magic is melting my hands away. He/she/it is the God of Decay and the whispers sound like many voices all speaking in a hollow tone. My Warlock is an albino human with one red eye, one blue eye, white blonde hair with a couple strands of red hair in there, he sunburns outside easily and his eyes are very sensitive to the sun so he wears a beige cloak that covers everything and a hood that sticks out far. He was a random wanderer that was chosen by his Patron to cause destruction and while he's doing that he does it to the evil who deserve it which doesn't matter to the Patron because it just wants decay. Being a neutral good Warlock has proven to be a very difficult task for many reasons and even though it's difficult my Warlock believes it's worth it even with the constant suffering.

Luckily the story has gotten a lot happier for Evan.
After Evan gave a healing potion to the cleric I spoke of my Patron caused my next spell to turn on me, I summoned a greater demon.
After Evan was revived he was abandoned by the Patron.
For the next two sessions Evan prayed with the cleric, a nature cleric, and became a arch fey Warlock (8lv) and is now taking levels in grave cleric (3lv).

@@le_mothman you know what pissed me off the most is when I became a grave cleric in a dream my decay Patron told me that he influenced my decision to be one of decay.
I pissed him off by saying that a grave cleric is about the natural decay of the world and not the destruction of what deserved many more years of life.
i love the outfit change from Bazthar's green, open-front robes to the professional-looking purple robes and staff when he got forced back into Warlockhood
It's even better when you hear in the follow up video that they were a gift to symbolize his new freedom.

Sometimes I'll stumble across unsettling videos like this out of nowhere and I'll spend the next few days with it etched somewhere in my brain and itching with a morbid curiosity. I found this video looking for inspiration for a warlock, and I sure as Hell found something. Your character is super interesting, thanks for trusting the internet enough to give us a glimpse.

No warlock pact comes with madness at the start, it always comes with time, rate, depth, & angle based on the patron.
My first character was a dragon born warlock of the great old ones, so I can agree

Lovecraftian gods do that to ya. If you want inspiration for a warlock patron read "King in Yellow" by Ambrose Beirce.
This is REALLY good!!! It so perfectly illustrates what the relationship between a warlock and their patron is like. I think too often people consider warlocks to be basically clerics, but a warlock’s patron is much weirder, and often times less merciful than a cleric’s god, which I think this video illustrates really well.
I know want to play a goolock inspired by this and say to my dm "make me as miserable as you can"
talonus202 Oh definitely. Bazthar’s patron emotionally manipulated him, making him feel completely useless and vulnerable, and then demanded he do their bidding. They never intended to help Bazthar; giving such a useless wretch power is just a means to an end. As a player, I don’t know how Bazthar is going to evolve from these circumstances. Maybe he’ll find a way to prevent others from falling in the same trap he did, or maybe he’ll lose his mind completely.
Well, not all warlock patrons are like the video. Celestial patrons tend to not be so chaotic, but of course that is only a tendency based off of most celestial patrons being Lawful Good

For me the unease is the songs implications of mental illness. You might have a good heart but like the song says you fall into a hole you cannot see. You are trapped in your own head and out of control. You don't understand what's going on in your own head. It's horrifying to think about let alone experience.
Mind control in this way was always the scariest thing for me...
It’s not mind control, it’s manipulation. Mind control is you forcing your own will upon someone else to achieve your ideals, they have literally no choice in the matter.
But manipulation? You’re convincing them to abandon their own ideals for yours by CHOICE. You convince them to give up everything because you made them believe they had no other option.
And that is SO MUCH WORSE!

This was freaking incredible! I love how dark and twisted it gets. And the story of Bazthar pretty much being bounced between warlock patrons is awesome and messed up for your character to be going through that
What an incredible video. I'll be showing this to all of my players. You perfectly captured what I believe a pact with a Great Old One would entail; Insanity, Power, confusion, devotion and regret.

Ya know, part of me really wants to make a Skyrim character inspired by Bazthar. Naturally, he’d be an Argonian, and I think I’d emulate being a warlock by almost exclusively fighting with Deadric artifacts and investing skill points only into destruction, conjuration, and magic trees associated with Daedra I’ve became champion for (IE: Restoration would require Meridia’s quest, Illusion would probably go with Sheogorath, and maybe also invest in trees related to the weapon artifacts I get. Plus, being champion of all the Daedra would kind of naturally require someone to be insane considering the level of shit you gotta do. I think by the end of all the main questlines, his mindset would be that he’d done so much for power that there’s no way he could ever consider himself a decent person in any extent, and considering that several of Daedric artifacts are known to drive their wielder’s insane, he probably wouldn’t even have enough of his own mind left to recognize that he’d become a monster... an absurdly powerful, nigh immortal monster that would rival any of history, with clans of assassins, vampires, werewolves, and mages at his command, and that’s not counting the fact he could basically act as a miniature gate to Oblivion. Like really, who cares about the civil war at that point? At the end of the day, he is Bazthar the Blight King! He is the true Lord of Skyrim, and he orders all to cower and pra/ey!
I’m DEFINITELY stealing some of this imagery for the game I run. Incredibly unsettling but also scratches that eldritch horror itch perfectly. Man, I love warlocks.
I’m going to try and depict this video without. First scene Is the deity/demon trying to tempt him with knowledge/immortality until he is done serving as he is someone who seeks as much knowledge as he can get.
0:17 imagery is him making the deal with the deity/demon and the sound is him pleasing to a judge after taking the oath to the deity/demon and being condemned to the infirmary.
0:46 his friend comes to rescue him and they teleport out together.
0:52 him starting to go insane after using his overlords power.
1:00 is him talking to his overlord and his insanity starts to manifest as a malicious intention to do evil.
1:07 him and his friend adventuring as his overlord requires him to kill and pray in his name.
1:19 he is asleep and is being tormented by his insanity, as at 1:23 he has a moment of bliss before being flung back into his insanity, and how he is a plaything of his overlord, and how his overlord is holding him and he feels as if he’s suffocating for a promise of power that feels it will never come true.
1:36 his insanity makes it so he is starting to struggle distinguishing people.
1:38 more nightmares.
1:42 holy people attempt to drive the overlord from him causing him huge deals of pain.
2:01 he’s descending further and further into insanity.
2:04 he is begging his overlord to have mercy and release him. Either through no longer being in his servitude or by being allowed to die.
2:12 his overlord did not release him and it is a while in the future. He has descended so far into madness he can barely tell people apart and they are little less than bodies.
2:24 he, now a very high level character, has to pour everything into pleasing his overlord.
2:35 this is him thinking/talking, and he doesn’t think he can even trust his own brain anymore.
2:40 still him, and he feels massive amounts of regret for making the deal with his overlord.
2:49 more insanity.
2:58 his friend throughout all of this, the only person he recognizes at this point, realizes that his friend is so insane he’s not the person that he started this adventure with and doesn’t know if his friend is still in there, and if he is, he can’t get him out.
3:08 he’s gone so insane he cherishes his insanity and has lost any vestige of himself that remained.
As a dungeon master, I have encountered several characters like this. Even made a character act almost as insane as this one. The father of a young genius. His name was Riemann. In his thirst for power, he lost his mind. He can't even recognize his own son anymore.
Qorik, his son, is more on the side of science rather than magic. He's doing everything he can to save his father...
It’s very hard in d&d to express character emotions like that. Some UA-camrs I’ve watched play d&d like node have no character emotion and it’s boring.

For me, D&D is about collaborative storytelling. What's the point if characters don't grow and change over the course of a campaign? At least that's my opinion. I enjoy complex characters.
wowiwishicould draw Yes. I think that’s what a role playing game is for. Most people just try and finish the campaign. And that makes the emotional character piece just break. It makes it like a board game. But D&D is a role playing board game. And that’s why I think people should put feelings into d&d characters. When I play I make my character respond like how his feelings would and emotion. While others make a funny joke about it and move on in the campaign.

Hawaii Part II is completely magical; I can't help but recommend it if you haven't listened already.
Favorite part is the "court trial" part where he can't even say insane, as if he can't decide if he really is insane or if he is sane and everyone else is. (Or something like that, idk)

Hey, this is so random, but I watched this around the start of the year and I don’t think I ever thanked you. Thought you should know that because of this one random, amazingly done animatic you posted, I listened to the full song, then the full album, then the artists that were related and my music taste spiralled from there. I’ve never felt as much connection and reliance on music as I have this year and it’s helped me through a lot. It’s even lead to me gaining the courage to write my own stuff, and my taste in music has also become a huge part of my identity and super sacred to me. It’s defined basically my whole year, all because of your one video, which is so crazy.
So, yeah, thanks man. Keep doing what you’re doing :)

I can't fathom how much effort it took to get this just right but the final product is an imallgimation of so many fantastic ideas translated fluently into existance.
In other words...
THE SHEER CHAOS ENERGY THIS VIDEO RADIATES IS PERFECT!
I love the camera work you did in the video. So much of the unease and off-kilted feeling comes from how you use it. A lot of animations and videos could definitely benefit from using this aspect of the film in even a basic way.
If you are reading this and have no idea what I am talking about, rewatch the video and look for when the camera moves and does not. The only time the camera does not move is when there is movement on screen, rapid cuts, or Bazthar has not turned over the object to the demon.

Great animation , shows perfectly that once you made a Deal you are just a Pawn to the Bigger Powers~ no getting out of it unless Feet first and even that might not be an option....

This whole thing has inspired me to make a Great Old One warlock who's in fact just an avatar of their patron slowly gaining unbidden sentience, and is terrified by it.
This actually indpired my own warlock, his patron gave him power, but at the cost of lovecraftian insanity. Seeing things that cant possibly be there, knowing things that cant possibly be true, hearing thoughts that cant possibly be his own. The patron being a home brew being that gains power from chaos, so it shares that power with mortals willing to pay its fee.

😍 This is fabulously done. I cannot tell you how many times I've listened to this song and not caught some of the lines you illustrated here. Really adds new depth to one of the few songs from Hawaii part 2 that didn't really resonate with me previously.
God damn I am impressed. I love warlocks because of how varied they are and how much story they can give and this manages to encapsulate so much of that! I love this and I already have so many ideas for how to use warlocks and patrons in my own game. This is just awesome
My favorite part of the video is the text, it's very expressive and expresses subtle characteristics in the speaker. Like when Bazthar is speaking with the demon, the demon's text is more print like, and hard but Bazthar's text is free flowing, and more like cursive. Love subtle details like that

Watching this video really take me back as my very first D&D character was a Dragonborn warlock, and can I just say that I love your work and can’t wait to see more in the future

Honestly I love this. I wish I’d found this sooner. I can’t put in words just how much inspiration this has given me, and all the ideas you’ve set flowing in my own mind for warlocks and other classes from other rpg systems. You’ve shown me exactly why my warlocks have never felt quite right. My DMs and I have always pushed interactions with patrons to the side. This... this is worldview shattering. I love it, both as a D&D player, and as an artist you’ve made something incredible and I wish I could give you an infinite number of views and support.

After watching this I'm both disturbed and I feel an intense desire to hug this poor warlock and get him through his withdrawal or do something to ease his terrible pain. You, as always, do such excellent work and have an equally excellent choice of music for what it is you're doing at a given time!
I watch this vid and it honestly makes me think of my Warlock, also a Dragonborn. He created the pact out of desperation and lost everything from his old life. Now hes bound to this fiend who constantly tell him to stick various cursed objects into himself for various flavours of power. All the while hes slowly becoming unhinged. Hearing things, hallucinating, even straight up ending up in horrific nightmares planes at random.

the eyes remind me of my own warlock, his name is Sergoth..at least thats what was written in his book of shadows. His great old one keeps taking his memories, even things like how to smile, from him every night so he's not entirely sure about his name. His patron goes by many names, the hungering eyes, the maw, The endless expanse of knowledge, Q'rrlakkiti, the hunger, it doesn't entirely matter. Sergoth exists solely to sate this creatures hunger for experiences and knowledge, and suffers greatly for it...you really did nail the feeling of warlocks though, the only pacts that the warlock really has control over are hexblades, even a celestial can very easily turn on you if you decide you don't want to do its bidding anymore.

I don't know why, but I have this tendency to assume people who post stuff using other people's works made all of it themselves. It's happened more than once, and also, I couldn't see the comments I posted immediately after posting them, so I panicked.
I love this animatic. I can't find any that now perfectly explain the struggle of a warlock with their patron and I just wanted to say that you've inspired me to take my warlock to the next level and go all out into the madness. Thank you for your beautifully crafted animatic. You all did amazing work with this story.

This is the second one of you're videos like this that I've seen, that despite being some of the most basic stop motion, imposed genuine emotion into how I viewed the characters and situation portrayed. I cried with "Useless Child", and this one made that deep rooted emotion of knowing how it feels to lose a friend and companion to something devastating. You're art, choice in music and flare for pacing are all absolutely astounding.
Warlocks often have extremely ambitious patrons and when their plan isn’t executed properly, well they have to channel that energy somewhere, such as mental torture
i love this song, and this is THE best animatic ive seen for it. i keep coming back to watch it again bc its so good. please, never stop creating!! i love seeing other people's dnd characters, and i love seeing how people interpret classes and species and backgrounds to make really unique and interesting characters.

The Mind Electric always worked really good for my Divine Soul Sorcerer. She hears the voices of the god of Law in her head and went through electrotherapy as a child because she was deemed insane. When she escaped, she went on a holy crusade and proclaimed herself the prophet. I’ve been wanting to do an animatic on this for a while. It’s cool to see it done from a different character’s perspective!
