- Filmed over 5 years (1988-93), following the fortunes of three families in Sunderland set against the backdrop of industrial regeneration of the town following the closure of the shipyards.
Plans are drawn up for a prestigious new housing development on North Dock, Sunderland Polytechnic becomes a University and Sunderland get to the FA Cup Final (but lose).
Our three young people all have new challenges in front of them, not all see their future in Sunderland and those that do have had a tough introduction to the world of work.
The new Nissan Micra is launched heralded by trumpets as the last shipbuilding shed is pulled down and Wearmouth pit is finally closed and blown up; the final piece of the demolition jigsaw.
Really enjoyed this documentary, brought back loads of bitter sweet memories. To be honest, we're not that much further on 30 years later. Yes, we have the marina and glass centre and lovely landscaped riversides, but where are the jobs? Look at the town centre, it's definitely not a city centre, looks like it's been abandoned! I'd be very interested to see a follow up to this programme.
I went to school with Ian Sharratt during this time, I was the year below. Top lad, really nice guy. Brings back some memories watching all this.....
I was born and bred in Sunderland, but now live and work overseas, and its so sad to see how the whole city was mislead, mismanaged and deceived by these so called "leaders". Obvious promises that could never be realized, and if you look at Sunderland today, its a "broken promise" in every sense of the word, a shadow of its former self. Its not helped by the nearsightedness of many of the inhabitants, who are mired in a "local" mentality. I feel sorry for the folks of Sunderland, who are some of the best people in the world, hard working, hard playing, and honest to the core. However, they are open to being mislead, or gullible if you like. You get the leadership you elect, which in this case is what killed the city. I wish them all the best, I really do.
What a superb series. Thanks.
I worked on this film as camera assistant
Sad, sad, sad, a once vibrant town reduces to this !
It would be interesting to see what the younger people trying to make their way in the video r doing now
Yes I agree 😊
Would be grea
t to do another episode now.
Even back then Sunderland Clowncil didn't understand, just because someone has a business here, they don't have to live here, ruining the greenbelt back then, still making the same inept mistakes now. Great doc BTW.
Dave Turnbull looking like a film star!
Is that the Percival's from hendon talking about 6:20. Edit, so it is.
Yes, it is
Was there 1988 to 1993; it’s a dump, was then. Is now. Not much more to say. Really.
